Cave and basin connects to the geography shaping the west because it showed the government valued them natural beauty/value of the land and thusly thought “What else should we preserve??” , It connects to Human Enironment Interaction because the tunnel into the pool and retaining wall is an example of modifying the land, it counts as a region based off of the fact that its part of a national park, (Quote from Van Horne “If we can’t export the scenery, we’ll import the tourists” and the referenced quote refers to movement, it’s a place in cultural place becaue of the tourist trapping, and is an absolute location (Cave and basic national park. Fun fact- CPR built the Empress Hotel and the Hotel Vancouver. Near-extinction of snail led to the conservation (Human-environment interaction) of the snail by closing the hot springs pools, and blocking off the hot springs from even being touched by the tourists (Not that I’d want to touch it considering the smell of sulphur there)

Reflection 4: The Frank Slide This photo shows human environment interaction (In the Sub-theme of humans getting wrecked by the environment) due to the sheer size of the falling cliff face leading to the destruction of the mining camp in Frank, it also somewhat shows movement, as the rocks didn’t just teleport down the mountain, and the speed of the slide led to much of the destruction One hypothesis for the expediting of the slide was the mining of coal lead to more water creeping in to the cracks, freezing, and melting to expand the cracks, and if this hypothesis were true, then it could be said that human greed was responsible for the deaths of up to 90 people, but also, maybe, saved more people, because, more people would have come to mine the coal at Frank, and so might have been killed had the slide been but a year later. I can connect to the Frank slide by having climbed mountains and knowing the size of the rock face that fell, but I can also connect, by seeing the rockslides and moraine lake, as there, there were also rockslides, but seeing those, it simply blew me away thinking about the scale of the Frank slide.

Reflection 8: The Golden Skybridge I think that this represents movement, mostly of people, because I can’t walk on air, and neither can anyone else, there would have to be a way back across the canyon, and there would also need to be something to make money. I think that the golden skybridge is a clear example of profit to be made from what would otherwise be an ordinary valley, as the tallest zip line in the Canada would be pretty profitable and would bring lots of tourism to golden, which would grow, and bring even more people to the zip line, until it snowballed into a booming metropolis Firstly, I regret everything I did there, from going across the suspension bridge (I would’ve felt safer if the floor was perpendicular to the railings instead of parralel) and going across the zip line (Worst decision of my life), yet I managed to gain a breadth of knowledge, such as into thrill seeekers and why they are INSANE. Also, the skybridge, at the GOLDEN skybridge wasn’t gold, so I want a refund.

Reflection 5: Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site This shows me Cultural Place, as it was where a major cultural event (The Buffalo Jump) wold take place, and also shows Human Environment Interactions, as the bison didn’t usually jump off of cliffs This photo represents the other side of the coin for colonialism, it represents the bison, but also represents the killing of them for sport, the refined ways, and not killing the entire herd, but only a part of it, versus the wholesale slaughter from the colonisers. It also eventually shows the destruction of the bison species, which led to the indigenous peoples being forced to sign treaties with the colonisers. I can connect to this place by having learned about coast Salish culture, and seeing the differences between their culture and the culture of the plains people, it also shows that their ways of life and ways of food were distinct and unique to each side of the rockies, as the geography led to the lack of fish in the plains.

Reflection 2: Downtown Calgary My photo demonstrates the theme of place by showing the cultural icon of Beakerhead in Calgary as well as juxtaposing Steely T, the turtle in the background with the office buildings in the far background, it shows movement because Beakerhead probably brought people who had seen it in years prior back (Movement of People). In years past Beakerhead was a major Calgary event, spanning the city, but after covid, is was shut down, and 2022 was the return of a cultural icon. I think this photo shows a part of the spirit of Alberta by displaying their use of natural materials in the turtle, as well as showing that even though no fee is payed by visitors, the work done at Beakerhead inspires people to enter the world of STEAM as well as paving the way for a future of inventors and creators. I can connect to this photo by remembering the friendship I’ve formed and grown in that trip, as well as showcasing my friends’ enjoyment of the performances there

Reflection 1: The Last Spike This photo shows movement through the train in the background, symbolising the reason the railway was made, as well as the reason BC joined Confederation The french on the plaque at this sign shows the multilingual nature of our nation, as well as the rock that it is embedded into showing the western view of the world by commemorating things by making (Very Ostentatious) monuments like statues. I can connect to this image, as someone who was at that site, by knowing that I might be an American citizen right now had it not been for the railway

Reflection 3: The Calgary Zoo This connects to the theme of movement, because (Surprise, Surprise) Lemurs aren’t native to Calgary and have to be imported from their homes in Madagascar. This also connects to human environment interaction, because, lemurs don’t naturally get on planes and fly to zoos to be enclosed in an exhibit, we have to take them. I feel like this exhibit shows that despite our being 16,000 kilometres away from Madagascar, we still can have animals from there, the lemurs might also bring much revenue from curious children, as well as tourists such as ourselves. This can connect to the Cave And Basin, because that national park was also opened for tourists to enjoy exotic landscapes and animals, and most importantly, to make money I can connect to this photo in numerous ways, all of which are personal to myself, including my love of lemurs as a child, to my experience with the lemurs at the London zoo, the first time I witness someone almost getting pooped on by a lemur

Reflection 7: The Glacier Skywalk and Columbia Icefield This shows a deliberate choice in location, as if the Skywalk was not in the valley, it wouldn’t be a very good skywalk, but it was also (I think) chosen to be framed against the backdrop of the glaciers on the mountain I think that this shows that people want to go into a giant slab of ice, as it represents something different from the normal world, but also it wants people who go to the glacier and skywalk to know that in 40 years, the glacier might be gone, so I think that the people running the whole experience want people to know that it might be gone soon so that they will make more money in the long run by peoples contributions to saving it (Greed runs deep, and even can be disguised as intentions to help the people) I can connect to this glacier and skywalk, by knowing that the clear floor and view down into the valley reminded me of the Empire State Building, which gave me a mini heart attack whenever I so much as thought of looking down.
