Going Coastal 2023

The first Euro-Americans along the Columbia River sent barrels of salted Chinook salmon to New York and Hawaii. The barrels were poorly constructed and with the bad preservation processes meant the Chinook was likely to spoil.

Canning was the solution to this problem.

Fun Fact: The first salmon cannery on the Columbia River was opened in 1866 by Hapgood, Hume and Company. By 1883 there were 55 canneries at the mouth of the river.

Depoe Bay is known as the worlds smallest navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan.

You shouldn’t bring rocks home because they are one of a kind. They are a non-renewable resource. They are also apart of a habitat, and it is unfair to the animals living there. 

I am excited to see a wolf because I have never seen one before. When I was I thought wolves weren’t real so seeing one will be pretty cool

There was a boat in the fishing section that someone used to row from Australia to Astoria, and I am so sad I didn’t get a photo of it because it is my favourite part of the whole museum. I row, and learning about someone that rowed so far is so cool and inspiring. It made me think about a race I want to do when I am older. It is from California (I think) and ends in Hawaii. It’s super long, and takes some teams up to 6 months to complete (slow teams). That distance is nothing compared to Australia to Astoria, but still something! I’m glad I saw the boat because it made me think of rowing, and how important it is to me

Citizen scientists are important because it’s gets the public interested in science. It gets them involved and aware of important information. It also helps scientists by the public helping collect information or resources. 

I would be willing to cross the bar. I don’t want to, but if I had to I would. I don’t know why I would ever have to, because of planes and other form of transportation.  I don’t think I would survive, especially if I was the captain.

To teach people about tsunamis because this is a tsunami area. Knowledge about tsunamis is really important to the public for safety reasons.

Cannon Beach is most well known for Hay Stack Rock. It is sometimes called the 3rd largest intertidal rock in the world.

The Yaquina Head Lighthouse started being built in 1871 and finished being built in 1873. It gives navigational aids to Oregon&apos;s coast. It is the tallest along Oregon&apos;s shores to signal danger warnings to mariners. It is also the third oldest lighthouse in Oregon and the second oldest still in operation.

Fun Fact: this is Yaquina Heads 150th Anniversary this year!

The first peoples were impacted by the first colonists in this area. They were impacted because the first colonists wanted the land and resources. This meant the fisrt peoples lost land an resources. After some time a fur trade was established between the two groups. This meant the colonists and first peoples became more “friends” with each other. Of course the colonists were still using the first peoples, but they had to respect each other more. More Europeans came, and more interaction between the two grups happened. The fur trade was really big. It was a global enterprise that transported goods from the Pacific Northwest Coast to China, then from China to England, New York, Hawaii, and back to the coast.  Their worldview was probably impacted too. The first peoples were surrounded by other people with different beliefs, opinions, mind set, etc.

My group had a pretty good time during our R.O.V. Challenge. Our R.O.V was definitely a fail, but we had fun! We came across a lot of challenges, like the design of the robot and then when it was in the water. We started the design to small, then we went wayyyy to big. We stuck with the really big design which was probably a bad idea, so then we had a really hard time building it. I didn’t understand how it would work so my team had to take lead. Once we finally made it we actually made it bad and it couldn’t turn very well. Overall the robot didn’t work but our team worked well together.

The troller Darle was one of seven identical trollers built in 1945 at George and Barker Cannery for the CRPA (Columbia River Packers Association). The craftsmanship that went into the Darle is demonstrated by its excellent condition after fifty years as a working boat.

Having activities in small towns like this are really important for the economy. They are tourists attractions. They make people want to either come to the small town for that activity, or stop in the small town for the activity. That means more people might buy food, or book a hotel.  In general, it adds more attention to the town.

These glasses are the coolest thing I saw because I want a pair. They are called pit vipers and I want a pair of hot pink ones. Pink makes me fast when I race, so I need more pink. I also look really good in them (better then Mika)

The fishing exhibit was one of my favourites at the Columbia River maritime museum. I don’t know why, but all of a sudden I am very interested in fish. I have always been interested in the ocean, but seeing all this fish stuff makes me more interested. Super cool!

A fisherman cannot work with just a boat So many pieces of equipment and supplies are needed to run a fishing boat properly; engines, pumps, electronic navigation and communication equipment, heating and cooling systems, lights, and other manufactured parts. Fishermen also need rain gear. On a cold, foggy, and rainy morning, good rain suits can make the difference between a great day and a terrible one.

Today’s challenge was really good. I liked it a lot more then the first challenge. I think mainly because of how my team worked a lot better together this time. We listened to what we said we should do last time; read all the instructions first. This was really good because we could move a lot faster while still answering all the questions/solving the clues. Also, us being outside in nature on a beautiful day made us all feel better. I think for next time we could try and make sure everyone is involved more. I know that I was probably not helpful compared to other people, so I know I need to contribute more and try to stay more focused. Overall I had a really good time and really enjoyed this quest.

The Tillamook Cheese Factory was founded here because the climate. Happy cows make happy cheese. There are also lots of cows in Oregon.

My name is Alex Cree, I am 14 years old, and I’m pretty cool I’m a rower, I really like nature, and I LOVE the ocean 🌊  If I could describe myself with one word it would be goofy I love exploring and spending time with my friends I am a GOD in math I don’t have a favourite colour And I am super cool

At Fort Stevens I learned about Battery Pratt and the guns there. There was a replica of 6-inch rifle! The riffles were used as a part of the forts artillery. These riffles (to stay hidden from ocean view) were mounted on “disappearing” carriages. They could also shoot really far, like 6 miles! These guns were really powerful, they were made for war.

The Astoria Column is 125 feet tall and is covered on the outside by a frieze that depicts Astorias history.

Wolf haven is important because it is a home for wolves that need one. They could have been born in captivity or hurt in the wild, either way wolf haven is there for them. Wolf haven is also home to red wolves, which is an endangered species. They do breading for them, only when necessary. They are increasing the red wolf population, which is amazing. Wolf haven doesn’t breed unless necessary, which is another they show how they respect the animal. The wolves aren’t put on display, and their needs are put above the people’s needs. That’s one thing that separates them from zoos. Rather then having a small enclosure with lots of animals in it and being out on display they have natural environments for them to live in. There are other animals that live at wolf haven too. Bats and coyotes are homed here, for similar reasons to why the wolves would be. Wolf haven is important for the wolves, important for the environment, and important for the world.

For my crab experiment we thought bigger crabs would be faster then little crabs. We tested this by putting one crab into the runway, chasing it with our hand, and timing it. We did this with 2 big crabs (one boy one girl) and 2 little crabs (one boy one girl). Our results were pretty messy. If you put the smaller crabs times together they are faster then the big crabs. But the boy big crab was faster then the boy little crab. Our results say bigger crabs go faster still, but now we think the sex of the crab plays a bigger role then size.
