Adventure Diary Gr. 8

Depoe Bay is known as the  whale watching, navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Oregon.

Cannon Beach is most well known for Haystack Rock. It is sometimes called the 3rd largest intertidal rock in the world.

The Astoria Column is 125 feet tall and is covered on the outside by a sgrattito that depicts the history of this beautiful area. _______.

This is my column. It depicts my relationship with my Welsh Nanny. I love her so much. I really realized how much I need her last time I went to Wales’s. On the car ride back to where we were staying, I started crying. I was so sad that I thought that was the last time I’d see her. I love you Nanny and I hope I’m wrong about everything.

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

We solved the R.O.V. Challenge by working together as a team to design, build and test our machine. We spent about ten minutes designing our first copy of the design elements of our robot project. We worked hard and as a team. I loved the idea of deigning the actual R.O.V. And I think that is was super fun getting the controls to the machine. I would try to reinforce the connections to make them more water tight. It was overall a great experience and I would do it again if I could.

Columbia River Maritime Museum First Nations Section

The First Nations had a thriving community but when the Europeans first entered their land, they made changes that could never be undone. The Europeans introduced the First Nations to guns Usually old muskets from the British or Americans. they also sold seyootter furs to the chinook people because they put a larger sum of money on sea otter furs compared to seal and beaver skins. The main way of trading was with copper or using a system of bartering.

I don’t think I need to explain but I will anyways. I love this video because Malaika is really being herself and I think we all need to embrace who we really are. I hope she finds Jeffrey....

I had so much fun with my group in our yurt. It was Alex, Holly, Grace, Meg, and I sleeping in our yurt.

Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitors Center

In the visitors centre there is a tsunami section because Oregon is a costal town and they are the most vulnerable to an tsunami. They are trying to inform those in the town about the tsunami risk. I think this is a great and well thought out idea.

The foot is how the clam gets its nutrients.

I’m excited to see a sea anemone because I really like how they move. They seem like they don’t have a care in the world. I love that they stick to things and are loyal to that area until death. They seem to be a team with the rock and I appreciate the way nature shows teamwork is the key to survival.

This is another reason I’m excited to see a sea anemone in the wild.

I’m excited to see Yaquina Head because I’m quite interested in the lives of the people who kept the lighthouses in good condition. I feel like I could learn a lot more about that.

Quests are challenges that are provided by our teachers that help us learn more about our surroundings!

Columbia River Maritime Museum Crossing the Bar Section

I would be willing to cross the bar. I think, despite the danger, I would. I would be extremely nervous but if someone knew how to control the boat I would put all my trust into them. I would need money to provide my family with the necessities. I imagine that that would  be a driving factor in why people would cross the Columbia River bar. You would get extremely wet when you go on your trip and I think I could handle it if I had a reason to.

You couldn’t take home any rocks because the environment is centred around the pebble beach. If one person took home a rock, that would mean everyone would be allowed to. There would be no pebbles left. The beach would disappear slowly and all the wildlife living there would go extinct.

Tillamook Cheese Factory and Izzy’s Buffet

This noise describes how I felt after eating the cheese.

The reason the creamery was started here in 1851 was because all the water from the rainy days, rivers and the bays made the grass extremely nutritious. The Oregon area has 5 bays and 5 rivers. It made it great for feeding the cows used for making the cheese. The cows were super healthy and produced rich dairy products. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center Speedy Science

We wanted to see if the biggest crabs were the fastest running across the track, so we made a graph to track the data. It looked something like this:

Our results were the bigger or heavier crabs went much faster than the smaller crabs. We can therefore conclude that smaller crabs are slower than the larger crabs.

This is Lauren and I Zip lining. I don’t know if you can tell but I’m wearing some pretty awesome peep socks.

I think these activities are really important to smaller towns because it creates jobs for locals. Most people would rather move out to a big city for a job. If there is a job your interested in in your town your more likely to stay living in that town. This means more people living in the town who are purchasing goods and services. This also means more people buying houses and therefore boosting the economy.

Hi! I’m Zoe W. and I love to ride my bike. I am in the 2018 P.L.P. Program and loving it so far. I loved our trip this year and am super excited to go to a unknown location next year, in grade nine. I hope you enjoyed this book and I highly recommended going to Oregon sometime in your life.

I learned way more than I ever knew about Fort Stevens. Loads of teachers have mentioned it but  I never really made the learning connections about how it was used as an office in the Second World War. They used the most secure room in the fort to keep the most important people safe. I really didn’t know that.

This is my favourite part of our meal from today. I enjoyed it with my group, Matthew and the Matewes. 

I think the northwest trek is important because it gives injured animals new lives and protects those who are unable to live in the wild. I think that they are motivated by the animals who need them to survive. Some animals like the bison and the mountain goats are self sufficient but animals like the raccoons or owls, for example, can’t live life without the humans. I think the way they are conducting the park is really admirable. They aim to inform those who visit, protect the animals, and keep the environment around both of them clean and hopefully fun. From what I’ve seen,  they accomplish all those goals with incredible grace and respect to all those in the park. I love the atmosphere of the park. Overall, I really like the whole park and I would happily visit again.
