A Mercury Thermometer consists of a glass bulb that is filled with a liquid substance called Mercury. A Scale is also written on the Glass Tube. This Scale shows the exact point till where the Mercury has reached. Example, in the following diagram, it show that the Mercury is at 37*C.

So, I think you may have understood the structure of a Mercury Thermometer. Now let's see how it works:-

The Temperature is measured in Celsius as well as Fahrenheit. Imagine, if a place's temperature is 27*C. When you keep your thermometer out in the open for a while, and come back and look at the scale, the Mercury must be at 27*C. But, how is that possible?

Well, when the temperature of the surrounding increases, the temperature of Mercury inside the glass tube also increases. This causes the Mercury to expand. The Mercury keeps going up until it reaches the point where it can't increase more. This is how the temperature is recorded globally.
