I’m excited to see cannon beach because I really want to see all the cool rock formations in the water and the interesting sea life

I’m excited to see these velella velella because they seem like a really interesting type of animal.

Hatfield Marine Science Center Speedy Science

At the Oregon marine center we raced crabs and tried to find out what makes a crab fast. There were lots of variables but we could only pick one. We picked that green shore crabs go faster than purple ones and we thought the purple ones would win. We were proven correct and our theory was that they would go faster because they were bigger. 

One of the things I learned at Fort Stevens is how they fire disappearing rifles. Disappearing rifles are 6-14 inch rifles. The reason they are called disappearing rifles is that after they fire, the recoil  moves them back to loading and cleaning position. The thing I found really cool was how everybody worked together like a well oiled machine while loading and firing the rifle. An example of this is how the person in the tower relays the data of what he sees the boats doing to the people in the battery. Every fifteen seconds a bell would ring and then the person in the tower would tell the new data of where the people   in the boats were to the battery. The people in the battery would then calculate how fast the boat was moving and where it was going. They would then tell the people firing the rifle where to aim and Voilà!

I think I would be willing to cross the bar, but only if someone helped me. I think I would enjoy the wildness of the waves. I would like to cross the bar in my own ship, if a pilot came onboard. I wouldn’t let the pilot drive, but I’d have him tell me what to do. I definitely wouldn’t do it a long time ago though, it’s too dangerous!

A video of our first day in Oregon. We went lots of places including the Astoria column and Dismal nitch. I like my video because it includes time with friends and also time to explore. My favorite part was the Astoria column because it’s like a big comic strip. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

Our group worked very well together when trying to build an ROV. We each assigned ourselves a job and then we each had something to do. First when we were sketching it we talked about what we were trying to accomplish with the ROV, and then we figured out what we thought the best design would be at the time.  When we were building it, if we had a new idea, we made sure to check with the group about it before we put it in action. We worked together as a team; some people putting it together, some people telling where to put the pieces together and some people holding it steady. Looking back on it, I think we could have probably eliminated all the extra space at the back. There were a lot of pipes not doing anything except making it heavier. Another thing we probably could have done differently was to put the magnet we used to pick up the metal things on the front. We accidentally put the magnet on the back and then decided to keep it because we thought it was a good idea. It wasn’t. Other than those things I am pretty proud of our ROV design

Depoe Bay is known as the smallest navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan .

I think the reason that there is a tsunami machine in the Oregon State University Visitor Center is to help people understand what tsunamis can really do. I think that unless you have been in a tsunami, you can’t begin to imagine the destructive power a force like that has. I think that the tsunami simulator in the visitors center is trying to tell people what they can do, so that everybody is aware of the dangers of a tsunami. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center Assemble a Whale

I think our class worked pretty well together when we were building a whale. We used the suggested strategy of doing it like a puzzle, where you do the corners first. In this case though, we did the spinal column first and then the ribs. We worked pretty well together, especially after we looked at an example of a whale skeleton. My favorite part of this was the ribs, it was really cool to try to find a pair that match and then see where they go. I think next time it would probably be easier to start at 1 end, and then work our way up to the other end. Also if we talked a bit more to each other where the we all thought the pieces would go.I really liked assembling a whale and I would definitely do it again.

The Northwest Trek Wildlife park is a protected park for animals. I think that it is important because it gives a chance to animals that can’t live on their own in the wild. I think that humans have caused some destruction and destroyed those animals natural habitats, so it’s time we take responsibility and try to create places where they can live somewhat on their own. I believe in protecting animals and not letting another species go extinct. I think the people who work at the wildlife park believe in protecting the animals and giving the next generation a new future. I think they are trying to make a difference in the world.

I think our group worked pretty well together on the quests. We had some trouble reading the whole thing before moving on to the next step, but after a few quests we really got the hang of it. We were very good at doing things as a team and we tried to make sure that we were all pretty close together. Another thing we could work on is that we probably needed to assign everybody a different job so that everybody had something to do. We were, however very good at solving the clues when we actually read all of it. I am proud of how well we worked together and how well we communicated. All in all our group worked pretty well together solving the problems and completing the quests.

Columbia River Maritime Museum First Nations Section

The Chinook people had lots of traditions. They lived in the lower Columbia region for thousands of years, communicating and trading with their people all over the coast. In the museum they made it very clear that even without the European explorers, they already had an immense and complex trading network going on. Unfortunately when the Europeans came, they took away the Chinookan people’s songs and traditions. Thankfully, after all this time, the descendants of the Chinookan people are trying to bring back those traditions. Another part of their culture is the western red cedar. They used it to build lots of things including mats, baskets and clothing.

Cannon Beach is most well known for Haystack Rock. It is sometimes called the 3rd largest intertidal rock in the world.

You can’t take home or keep the rocks at Yaquina bay head because they are very rare cobblestone. The beach is one of the only ones in the world and so is a protected area. If everybody took only 1 rock still wouldn’t be enough for everyone, and then the sea creatures that live in or around them would die

Tillamook Cheese Factory and Izzy’s Buffet

It was founded here because the first people found that because of the climate, grass grew really green. They then stared farms. Green grass means they can have lots of cows. And so they figured it is a good place to have a farm. Some of the farms from the area wanted to make sure their products were the same quality so they came together and founded the Tillamook chese factory.

I think companies like highlife zip lining are important because they help small towns get money and a bigger population.

Hatfield Marine Science Center Animal Adaptations

What are animal adaptations? Animal adaptations are when an animal changes to better suit their environment. For example, sea urchins adapted so that whenever something sharp pokes at their skin, they will immediately point all of their spines towards the area that is being touched. This will probably force the sharp thing to stop poking them and this will let them live longer. All animal adaptations have some sort of usefulness to further the animal’s life or that of their kids.
