Until then, I conduct individual assessments to get a baseline knowledge of their reading and pre-reading skills. This helps me to plan for each student and each class.

The beauty of this activity is that all students, regardless of their language ability can participate and create based on their own language level. The students also have an academic conversation with their peers.&nbsp; This gives me the opportunity to constantly assess the impact of my instruction. How can you help?&nbsp;&nbsp; If you’d like a set of cards for your student’s grade level, simply email me <a href="mailto:cluesang@bhusd.org">cluesang@bhusd.org</a>.&nbsp; It’s also helpful for parents to discuss academic content at home with students.&nbsp; Discuss in English and or in the language you speak at home.&nbsp; The most important thing is that we are building connections in the brain.&nbsp; Language is the foundation for learning.

When do ELD classes begin? Classes typically begin a few weeks after school begins. I do have to test all students that qualify for testing who are new to the school. As of today (Sept. 1) we will begin EL classes for Kinder and 1st by the end of next week. All ELD classes occur during the school day. Kinder, 1st, 2nd, &amp; 3rd grade classes are 30 minutes a day. Fourth and 5th are 40 minutes a day.

Ms. Lue-Sang is teaching kindergarten ELD this year. Our goals for Kindergarteners are as follows: #1. Be able to respond to questions in complete sentences and ask questions. #2. Be able to use and understand basic Kindergarten words and phrases #3. Know the alphabet, letter sounds, and words. #4. Understand that letters make sounds and these sounds form our words. #5. Kinders also need to listen to academic content and retell/understand what their teachers have said.

How are students assigned to the ELD class? - When families register, they indicate whether another language is spoken at home. - Two weeks after school begins, we administer the ELPAC test. This test lets us know if the student is proficient in academic English. - If the student is not proficient in academic English, the student is admitted to the ELD program until they reach proficiency. - If the student is proficient in English, they are not enrolled into my class.

What is “Hexagonal Thinking?” Ms. Lue-Sang is always learning.&nbsp; This year, I am focused on developing academic vocabulary and academic speaking skills.&nbsp; Recently, I learned about Hexagonal Thinking as learning routine for students to practice new vocabulary and understand the relationships between concepts. I am using this learning routine with my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.&nbsp;&nbsp; First, I isolate vocabulary the students need to learn and discuss.&nbsp; For this lesson I used words from their science unit.&nbsp; I added vocabulary and pictures to help. Next, I model the thinking for the students. I use the cards to orally create sentences and concepts. I invite the students to participate with me one by one. The last step is for the students to create their own hexagon charts and use them to speak and write about their content.&nbsp;

I am Ms. Lue-Sang. Welcome to Horace Mann's ELD class! ELD stands for English Language Development. A little bit about me: I have a 14 year old daughter. I have lived in Los Angeles my entire life. I have worked in education for over 25 years. I love to travel, camp and hike. I will get married in the summer of 2023. My dissertation research was in teacher attitudes and skills when teaching EL students.

When is ELD? Students come to my class for 30 minutes a day during the school day. Each grade level has an assigned ELD time. This happens during Common Instructional Time, so they do not miss instruction in their homerooms.

Welcome to English Language Development! I wanted to share this information with families for 2 main reasons: 1. I want to help new families better understand the ELD program. 2. I want to show families of incoming ELD students the type of work we will do in class this year. We will use this app with others for learning and demonstration of learning. I do teach Kinder - 5th grade. The students' use of technology to complete assignments are grade and age appropriate.

My beliefs: I believe in student centered instruction. That means I consider students' starting points and work with students to progress at their pace. I build confidence, relationships and I hold high standards. I believe that languages other than English are important. I work to celebrate all of the languages represented in class. I love teaching. I believe in challenging students through rigorous application of curriculum. This year my theme will be to incorporate technology to find ways for students to display their own GENIUS in ALL of their languages.

What is ELD? ELD stands for English Language Development. The ELD class is for students who are not yet proficient in English. We learn academic English. I teach skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. I also help students improve their reading and writing skills.
