A message from Mrs. Eddy
Head of School.
As we come to the end of our autumn term, it is time to reflect on what an extraordinary term this has been for us all in school and what an unusual year overall we have all faced. The challenges of dealing with a global pandemic have undoubtedly provided us all with a range of issues to face both in our working and in our personal lives. Above all, I hope that you and your families have remained safe and well throughout this difficult time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and cooperation in adhering to our Covid-19 risk assessments, routines and day to day operations. This has enabled us to remain open throughout the pandemic and as a consequence, our children have been able to play, socialise and learn together within the familiar setting of school.

School life has been different and our usual school trips, visitors to school, sporting fixtures and our much loved Christingle service, carol concert and nativity plays in church, have sadly not taken place. Staff working in school however have ensured that children have experienced a range of exciting and enriching learning activities, across a broad and balanced curriculum, within their year group bubbles.

You will notice that this terms newsletter is slightly different in format to reflect these changes. Each class teacher has created an autumn term year group coverage story to showcase the amazing work which has been produced by the children. I hope that you enjoy reading these and can share with us the wonderful learning which has been taking place.
In September, we were delighted to welcome thirty new Year R children to our school community. They settled quickly, making friends and developing their learning.
Year R children being creative.
A highlight for me this term was the appointment of our Head and Deputy prefects. They have demonstrated true pride and commitment to the school community and are exemplar role models to our younger children. The Head and Deputy prefects represented us admirably on Remembrance Day by laying a wreath at the Hayle war memorial.

Thank you to you all for your ongoing support in ensuring that your child/ren are in school every day, ready and eager to learn. We appreciate all that you do.

Thank you to our Friends of Connor Downs Academy who have continued to support us with their wonderful fundraising efforts and successful bids. This term, brand new windows were fitted to Year 4 and Year 6 thanks to the tremendous support from the Friends.

I hope that you all enjoy the festive break with your families and friends and that you have time to relax in each other’s company. I look forward to welcoming you back to school in 2021.

As we reach the end of the year, we can all reflect upon the last 12 months.  The Covid-19 crisis brought many challenges, which have affected every household.  Although Connor Downs Academy remains open, the restrictions on events and social distancing measures have prevented us from holding events. We therefore depend even more upon grants and donations, to enable us to provide extra resources.

We were extremely pleased to secure funding to replace the windows in Year 4 and Year 6 classrooms. The children and staff can now enjoy a warm and dry learning environment. We are incredibly grateful to Gwinear-Gwithian Sustainable Community Fund for their support.

Within our own family bubbles, many of us took part in the sponsored Welly Walk. Although the weekend was a little wet, this did not dampen the spirits of the children, and a total of £565 was raised. Thank you to everyone who took part and especially the parent who was the inspiration behind this event.

The children in Reception class will soon be receiving an exciting range of ‘Letters and Sound’ decodable home reading books, following a successful grant from Gwinear-Gwithian Parish Council.

Under normal circumstances, we would have enjoyed our annual Christmas Fayre, as well as Santa’s Grotto and fun games. The children always enjoy and take pride in making items to be sold. To carry on this tradition, each child has been busy making their own festive Christmas decoration. They have had some wonderful ideas and created lovely pieces which can be purchased via ParentPay. To continue the Christmas joy, we have also prepared a gift to give to each child.

We will continue to seek funding opportunities and promote easyfundraising, as this is a way that we can raise money, at no extra cost, to our families.

The committee would like to thank the school community for their support and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
