Yes, this is totally true. I'm not saying you need to know tons of different languages to understand the world we live in. Instead, you can only learn one language, English, for example, and that'll be enough. But... how can a language change your perception of the world? Well, I have a few explanations! First of all, if you only know a single language, you're very limited to where you can travel to. However, if you know how to speak English, for example, you can go (almost) everywhere in the whole world! Another good reason for learning new languages is that you get to know more about different cultures, which makes you acquire more knowledge about society, thus, giving you a different understanding on lots of things. Finally, learning new idioms can open so many doors, and give you a bunch of great opportunities, like making new friendships, going to different places, giving you more professional opportunities and more... The ability of knowing more than one language is a must in our world nowadays. Everyone knows that one language doesn´t give you a lot of opportunities unless it´s English. English is a global language and if you understand and/or speak this language it´s easier for you to communicate with the world. If you want to travel only knowing your mother tongue it will be hard for you to communicate with people from other countries. If you get a job in a foreign country and you don´t know its language it will be hard to talk to your co-workers. Communicating is important and it’s easier to adapt if you get to know the culture and for that you need to learn the language. Getting to know the culture of a country is not only walking around towns, seeing statues or visiting important buildings, but it is also about learning the way people do things, their lifestyle, their habits. I totally agree. When we learn more languages, we learn part of a new culture and we are more capable of communicating with others. At school we learn English, which is a very important language, and, in my opinion, the one we should learn after our native language because it is a global language and knowing it makes it easier to travel and being able to ask for help if you get lost, for example. Of course, it isn't only about travelling, it’s also about being able to watch films in whatever language it is because sometimes there is no Portuguese version and honestly, being multilingual is a big flex. There are apps or even videos to learn, so you have no excuse. It seems hard but it can be fun. The Last Dance &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This documentary in series format by Netflix talks about the most iconic and legendary basketball player, “The G.O.A.T.” (great of all time) himself: Michael Jordan.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;This series tells the whole way Jordan had to take to get in the NBA team until the end of his career. It also has some basic plot twist, cinematic transitions and emotional scenes. One thing I enjoyed were the interviews made and the way the characters fit in the episodes, but I think some of the interviewees weren’t being honest at all.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;In the 2nd part of the documentary, we are told a magnificent story, but the bad side is that if you already know Jordan’s life, it won’t be very enjoyable.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;I think the producers did the best they could about the graphics, because all old games have bad quality, but the same doesn’t happen with the rest of them. So, you’d better watch it.&nbsp; Overall, if you like basketball or even if you don’t, meet M. Bones A breath-taking series Although most people find crime-based shows repetitive and over used, the writers of “Bones” found a way to take our breath away at least once in every episode. Multiple devastating major character deaths, new characters and dangerous criminals make this series unpredictable, which really grabs the audience’s attention.&nbsp; Don’t even get me started on the “grand finale”. A lot of writers fail to amuse the audience as their favourite shows come to an end. However, the writers of “Bones” have again, left the audience speechless! Seriously, these writers have mastered the art of writing a thought-provoking script.&nbsp; The casting could not have been better! Each actor played their part perfectly. You could really feel the emotion of the main characters as they watch their best friend’s death. Even the early episodes of seasons 1-3 are captivating. Especially when they find out their colleague betrayed them!&nbsp; If you are looking for a breath-taking series, I strongly recommend “Bones”. What is your gift? What is your passon? What makes you come alive?

That's something I've been also asking myself for a while. The truth is even after all my efforts to figure it out I still don't know the answer to that question. I've tried dance, swimming, piano, track and even teaching myself a new language or how to draw or play the guitar. And while doing all of those things it always came the time where I got bored and realised it wasn't for me, that I wasn't really good at any of them. It's true and it's the reason I feel so lost most of the times. The only thing that has lasted through the years is reading but I wouldn't say it's a gift, maybe a passion. If I really put some thought into it, reading is more of an escape mechanism. It's the only thing I can rely on everytime life gets too overwhelming. So, I guess reading is my thing, it makes me happy and I know there will always be a good book on my shelf to read everytime I realise my new hobby isn't my gift or my passion. Bianca Pereira, 11.ºC

Nowadays, especially in our society, the power of information is what makes a population think and believe in something. Journalism and the news have the obligation to inform the world, the population about everything that is going on. However, we all know that a democracy, a nation, can only work if this information is reliable, because made up information - “fake news” - is increasing more and more in the last decade and most of the times makes us believe in something that isn’t true, isn’t real. In 2022 the world is facing a severe problem that will affect not only our generation but also our sons, grandsons, our lifestyle. The entire world has been informed about the invasion of Ukraine by Russia because of the media, the news, journalism.&nbsp;In many cases, but particularly in Russia, the population is facing a problem that I think we all have to fix. Propaganda, misleading information, oppression, and the detention of people just because they are against the war is something that we cannot tolerate. &nbsp;A democracy, a free country works because of good journalism, reliable and independent information that has the purpose of informing us, letting us know what is really going on! Sherlock This is a British series broadcasted by the BBC from 2010 to 2017.&nbsp;Created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, it features Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the fixed cast in the roles of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson, respectively. Sherlock promises to revive the nervous, contemporary, difficult, and dangerous character of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books. My favourite episode is "A study in Pink", an adaptation of the novel "A Study in Scarlet", due to the way the story is told, the engaging storyline and the unexpected ending that I will not reveal. The episodes in this series correspond to a short story and this is something I particularly like because I do not have to wait long to know how it ends and every episode there is a new adventure. In addition, the series puts contemporary characters in a digital world where there are mobile phones, televisions and computers and it's very funny to see Sherlock Holmes trying to adapt to technologies.&nbsp; I recommend watching Sherlock, especially for those who like mystery and crime and who know or want to meet the famous detective at 221B Baker Street, London. Peaky Blinders “You are a bad man but you are our bad man” The series was launched by the BBC in 2013, and the story takes place in Birmingham in the aftermath of the Great War. Returning soldiers, newly minted revolutions and criminal gangs are fighting for their survival in a nation rocked by economic upheaval. One of the most powerful gangs of all time is the Peaky Blinders, run by Tommy Shelby and his family. The Shelby family are making a name for themselves as bookmakers racketeers and gangsters, they will build out an empire that will stretch way beyond Birmingham. Created and written by Stephen Knight, the series has a superb drama, interesting and diverse characters as Tommy Shelby, Poly Gray, Alfie Solomons and Arthur Shelby, it has also breathtaking events that make you stick to the TV and watch “just one more episode”. The soundtrack only makes it better, “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave fits perfectly! If you’re looking for a series with sunrises and sunflowers this is not the series for you; therefore, I recommend this series to those who love action, drama, history, those who love travelling in time through a screen. Overall, it is an absolutely Oscar worthy series!!! Ricardo Carvalho, 10.ºD

I've always had a strong connection with arts: cinema, music, literature... since I can remember. When I was a kid, even before I learned how to talk I already sang Christmas songs. When I was at preschool I was passionate about paintings, to the point I would stop at museums standing still, analysing every detail of the piece. Now that I am a bit older, my refuge are fashion, music and poetry. I write songs, I write poems and I try to present my old soul as best as I can with the power of arts. When I was younger, I&nbsp;used to dream about being a hairdresser because I really enjoyed playing with my friends' hair and my barbies’ hair, and put make up on them. Everyone used to tell me that I was really good at it.&nbsp; However, as time went by, I forgot about that dream and started to know myself more deeply.&nbsp;&nbsp;It all started after I discovered a certain interest in watching videos of missing and murdered people. I could watch those videos all night long. It didn’t scare me. In fact, it made me want to solve those true crime cases. It was at that time that I understood that I wanted to be a criminologist.&nbsp;I’m a very curious person and I really like to read about those issues.&nbsp; I have never worked in my life, but I would enjoy working part time in a police station or something like that. As you have probably already heard a million times family is really important, therefore spending time with them is something you should look forward to. There are a lot of different families, but they have one thing in common: love and affection for each other. Being with your family is a thing everyone should do. By doing this, you will be developing a closer relationship with all the members and will also feel happier because you will be surrounded by the people you love. Even family gatherings like having a picnic or eating lunch together can help, both you and your family, emotionally, and will make you become a more caring person. And if you have ever wondered “Why do I need to be close to my family?” just know that by having a strong bond with them may help you a lot, for example, if you are having a difficult time in your life, there will always be someone for you, to cheer you up during these though times. The documentary “A Life on Our Planet”, released in 2020, is narrated by Sir David Attenborough and directed by Alastair Fothengill, Jonnie Hughes and Keeth Scholey. This documentary is about the way our planet is suffering the results of our actions and becoming more and more dangerous to all species every day. Global warming, climate change, species loss and overpopulation are real and very serious problems, and Sir David Attenborough shows that to the public, in the rawest way possible. It is shocking for any person to see how the world was some years ago and what it became, all because of us, humans, and our lack of concern for the world. For example, when he shows the alarming speed at which wildlife species are disappearing or when he mentions the way the animals we eat are treated, or all what humankind does to the planet exhausting its resources to a threatening limit. We can also see that the world doesn’t need us to survive, for example, in Chernobyl, after the disaster, the plants started growing there again and the animals went back there so we are the only, singular, reason that makes the world so unstable.

Hope is not lost, however, Sir David states. We still have time to stop and even reverse the damage we have caused to the planet. He mentions several simple and viable solutions, such as the following: stabilize the global population, shift to renewable energy, restore biodiversity and end deforestation. In conclusion, I found this documentary really important and eye opening. I was able to realize that we are only hurting ourselves, that if we don’t stop now, the humankind is going to end, but the remaining animals and nature will eventually recover, without any help from us. With this said, I hope that people start thinking more before polluting and doing things that can harm the animals and the planet. I learned a lot about the world and what we can do to get better, so I think this film is extremely educational for everyone. Mariana Alves, 11.ºF

&nbsp;Should we all speak the same language or should we preserve the different languages ?

Currently, there are more than seven thousand languages in the world. Some people believe that we ought to speak the same language. And others think that we must preserve all the different idioms. It seems to us that both ideas could work together, since languages are used to communicate and give us cultural identity. Firstly, a lingua franca is beneficial to us, in a sense that it facilitates the communication between different people of different nationalities. Nowadays, we can see the Ukrainian people giving statements about the war in English, which avoids the interference of translators and makes communication easier. On the other hand, the existence of a unique global language will erradicate a crucial cultural identity trait, one's native language. For instance, the word "saudade" is a Portuguese word that doesn't have a translation. Oppositely, the English word "cupcake" has translation to Portuguese, yet we use it everyday while speaking Portuguese, which is not a good thing once it impoverishes our language and eventually contributes to its destruction. All things considered, we believe that although it would be easier if we all spoke the same language, all languages must be preserved. Every language is unique and undoubtly the most important cultural trait of a people, the loss of one of them makes the world a much poorer and less interesting place. In our lifetime, we will find many hard questions and plenty of problems that we will need to solve. However, one of the hardest tasks that someone can give to us is to choose our future career. As it is said in the quotation “Choosing a job is a difficult decision. A job is as important as one’s personal life”, a job can actually be one of the most important parts of our life, since we will stay at least eight hours of almost everyday working. In fact, as I already said, choosing a career won’t be easy, due to the fact that, if we don’t choose wisely, and we start working in a job that we don’t truly love, that job will become a burden and we might lose our motivation. On the contrary, if we find a career that we are passionate about, working won’t even feel like working. In conclusion, we need to choose our career really carefully, therefore, I totally agree with the statement above, because it allows us to have a much better idea of how important this choice will be for us. According to this statement, choosing a job is one of the most important things in life, if not the most important one. Nowadays, people tend to follow what their parents tell them, what they like the most or even what pays better, but is it really that important? In my point of view, this decision is indeed really hard, not only because you have a lot of pressure coming from your close ones but also because of the fact that it is something that will follow you for the rest of your life. Things like the paycheck are obviously important and you should also consider that when making your decision. However, in my perspective, we should mainly focus on selecting a job that brings joy to us whenever we do it, not only to make you feel happy, but to maximize your work. For example, if your task is to customize a shirt, the outcome will look way better if you are with harmony with what you do. Concluding, all these factors need to be taken in consideration and that’s why this statement is a hundred percent right. Advertising is everywhere. There are leaflets in your mail box, jingles on the radio, commercials on tv, ads in newspapers and famous faces on the sides of buses...&nbsp; In my view, the industry uses emotions, logic, music, beauty and deception to make you spend your money.&nbsp; Of course adverts influence us, if they didn't companies wouldn't spend so much money on them. Adverts have a subconcious effect. When you are at the supermaket and you pick a product from a shelf it is because you probably heard the name of the brand or seen the logo and you feel you can trust it. That's the power of advertising!&nbsp;Even though&nbsp;adverts influence my choices, I always compare the prices to get the best deal and to save money .&nbsp; Summing up, I would say that nowadays it is almost impossible to live without advertising.&nbsp; Andreia Oliveira, 11.ºF

Advertising is very powerful and it is everywhere. Everywhere we go, everywhere we look, we are inundated by publicity. I am amazed at the influence it has on our lives and it is scary, actually. Marketing and propaganda control everything we do in a lot of ways. A good ad or commercial tells us we need something even before we think we do.&nbsp;several tricks are used such as music and sound effects which make us feel happiness and excitment . Those nice jingles that we can't get out of our head are used to make us think of a product. For example, we all know the jingle that Pingo Doce uses. It is very captivating.&nbsp;We may believe that advertising doesn't control us, but it does On the other hand, advertising is powerful too when it informs or mobilizes us towards important issues. For example, in my view, I don't think that I'd know so much on the state of our planet or on how to act if it weren't for certain advertising campaigns. They encourage us to do something about it and, in this way, I think advertising is very importante and good for us.&nbsp; This is the power of advertising. The person that I am going to talk about is very important to me and I admire him. Without further ado, let's get started. The person in question is a male. He is a kind of role model to me eversince I was a young girl. He is brave, kind, he respects others, he is open-minded, and he has a lot of other qualities. The characteristics that I most admire about him are the fact that he always shares what he has without wanting anything in return and that he is so adorable and open-hearted with every single person that he speaks to. Like any other person in this world, he has a downside. He, sometimes, can be a little intolerant with people who aren't as bright as he is, but that's a small detail when we put it side-by-side to his other characteristics. Jojo Rabbit is a recent film released in 2019 and directed by Taika Waititi. This film is a comedy/drama that follows the story of a young German boy, Jojo Rabbit, who lives during the second World War. This boy is a fanatic about the war and Hitler. He is a very special kid because his passion about Hitler is making him imagine Hitler as his best friend, his imaginary best friend. The plot takes place when Jojo finds out that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. And from this moment on, Jojo has to fight his blind nationalism and choose between denouncing the girl because of his Nazi convictions, or not denouncing her because of the love he has for his mother. In the story we follow a boy who learns that war and hate are not the solution for problems and that Hitler is not like the amazing man he had imagined. In my opinion, this is an incredible and unforgettable film. The special effects are very realistic, especially the war scenes, and the soundtrack is very appropriate. The acting is powerful and it really drew me into the story. There were hilarious scenes but many times I was laughing of a scene and then asking me if I really should be laughing at it. Even with the comedy, the violence and the pain are still there, they do not disappear. The plot about what happens to people during the second World War is very thought-provoking. This is without a doubt one of the best films I have ever seen. I recommend this film to people who not only enjoy comedy, but also history and true facts. People willing to see the suffering that generations before us had to face. This is a good film to learn about the mistakes that the humanity shouldn’t repeat. Oceane Rodas, 10.ºD

The film I chose was "The Baby Boss ".&nbsp;I love watching comedy films and this one surprised me the most.&nbsp;“The Boss Baby” is an American animated film, based on an illustrated book of the same name, written by Marla Frazee.&nbsp;“The Boss Baby” was released on March 31, 2017. This film covers the story of a family where Tim, a seven-year-old boy, is jealous of his little brother (Boss Baby Ted), a talking baby. When he goes on a mission to regain his parents' affection, he discovers a secret plot organised by the president of Puppyco that revolves around his brother and threatens to disrupt the balance of love in the world. In other words, it expresses a common dilemma, the rivalry between brothers, developing an intelligent story about the differences that exist between brothers and the way they learn to overcome them. In this film one observes a lot of adventure since it is gripping from beginning to end, with a mixture of scenes between reality, or rather, the way adults see reality and the magical way children live with it. Soon, both brothers must unite to "save" their parents, restore order in the world and prove that love is indeed an infinite force. This is an ideal movie for families, with some jokes and very interesting life messages for adults. Tim, like most children, shows no interest in having a brother! On the other hand, it will make adults think about how our society demands children to turn into mini-adults concerned with statistics, tests and honour boards, often forgetting to let them simply be children who need to play. The characters that most stood out to me were Tim and Baby Boss Ted. While Tim is a jealous, sad and an upset boy, due to his parents paying more attention to his brother, Boss Baby Ted, is talented, smart and secretive. He manages to hide the whole mystery of his mission and is the character who plays out the entire plot of this story. To conclude, I recommend watching this film, especially for people who love comedies, because there is no better film.&nbsp;When I watched "The Boss Baby", I was positively surprised, as we can see how smart children and babies are. “Love has the power to conquer everything!” Lara Pires, 10.ºE

I have trouble expressing myself, especially in front of a class with twenty-four people. However, I was asked to write a description of an important person in my life, so here's a hypothetical person who, for the matter, is very important to me. His name is Arthur. We have known each other since we were babies, even though I don't have memories from that time, neither does he. I really appreciate his calmness and way of thinking. Arthur is also scared of large groups (more than 8 people) and has a little stage fright that is fading with time and experience. We have a lot of interests in common. I will enumerate two of those: we both like to watch documentaries and enjoy the outside world, often with other friends. He's one of the few people that I look up to. Negative qualities about him, I almost forgot that part. I'd say Arthur is impulsive sometimes, but in most cases that makes him more adventurous and there are no consequences. This aspect doesn't bother me that much. He had to have at least one flaw. Alexandre, 10.ºA

Harry Potter The magic world of horrible special effects&nbsp; In this impressive universe of wizardry filled with fantastic creatures talented wizards and action-packed events, there is something even darker than Lord Volmort himself: The terrible special effects.&nbsp; This attempt to transport the viewer into the magical universe only ruined the immersive experience and the similarities with the real world. Although the storyline remains the same, being so complex and rich, the visual representation is so dull that it leads to more tears than Dumbledore’s death. For being a set of 8 movies from the early 2000’s they are not “bad” but they’re not up to today’s standards as even reading the books can be more memorable than watching the films. One example of this poor-quality CGI is a character named “Dobby” who, instead of looking like a house elf, looks like two deceased squirrels.&nbsp; If you’re new to this breath-taking universe, try not to judge the ancient special effects or the disappointing looks of some characters and maybe “stick” to the books.&nbsp; Horácio Cerqueira, 10.ºC&nbsp;

The 100: The IT factor&nbsp; I would say that throughout my life I have seen a huge number of movies and series because I think it is a good way to spend my free time, but from all of those I have watched, I would definitely recommend “The 100”.&nbsp; What made me enjoy it so much was the fact that it was the first series I have ever watched and really increased my interest in regards to this type of entertainment. My expectations were sky high and it didn’t disappoint me. In fact, it ceased to amaze me.&nbsp; The season I would label as the best one would without a doubt be season 1. Many of you would consider this as a “red flag “because it leaves the idea that the quality of the series decreased from season to season, but I wouldn’t see it that way. The first season is always the most important one in terms of getting the viewer’s attention and the producers of this series were very successful in that aspect.&nbsp; The casting for the series is spot on with Eliza Taylor and Bob Marley playing the role of Clark Griffin and Bellamy Blake as the main characters in an astonishing way and the sound tracks and special effects contributed to the great quality of this series.&nbsp; Overall, this is a wonderful series and if you want to spend some of your time watching something outstanding and captivating, this is IT.
