Curriculum highlights - Year 2

Year two were history detectives at Pendennis Castle learning about local history and Cornish myths and legends. This term they will be exploring our wonderful county and learning about it's unique culture and stories. The class will also undertake the national tests for reading, spelling punctuation and grammar and mathematics. These will be integrated into the normal classroom experience during the next few weeks.

Curriculum highlights - Year 5

This term Year 5's topic is Sow, Grow, Farm and the world around us. In writing, we will be writing to inform: children will be writing about a turtle's life cycle and the threats they face before writing about the life cycle of plants. During this topic, we will be exploring where food comes from and creating our own feast from ingredients grown in the allotment; we will be making carrot and coriander soup with a refreshment of elderflower juice.&nbsp;

Curriculum highlights - Nursery

In nursery we have been learning about a special occasion, can you guess what it is? We have learnt that the Queen has been on the throne for 70 years and that the colours of the Union Jack are Red White and Blue. We made a collage of our hand prints so that we can make a kite to be displayed alongside the rest of the classes' in school.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Curriculum highlights - Year 6

Year six have been extremely busy preparing for the SATs.&nbsp;They have worked hard ALL year and have done Probus School and themselves proud! This term our attention is focusing on two special productions - The Jungle Book and also preparing some scenes from Shakespeare's play - 'Much ado about nothing' - which we will perform with other schools from around the county at the Hall for Cornwall! Transition activities and end of term celebrations are all planned and we can't wait to share with you.

We are delighted to be expanding our senior leadership team and have appointed an assistant Head of School. This role has be awarded to Mrs Bowen who has several years experience of middle leadership. In Ms Praed's absence she will be the key contact and will join our leadership team, which currently consists of Miss Guy (Early years), Mrs Livingstone (Sendco) and Mrs Perfect (Senior teacher.) Mrs Bowen&nbsp;wishes to share, “I am delighted and excited to take on this opportunity and work closely with others to develop this marvellous school.”

Dear Parents May is an important time for our year six pupils as they take the national statutory tests in SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar), Reading and Mathematics. We would like to congratulation the pupils on their "can do" attitude and mature focus. We are very proud of the effort made and look forward to focusing on the transition activities and celebration of their achievements. Our new summer term projects are underway and these include as much outdoor learning opportunities as possible, which we feel are essential for wellbeing and growth. Many thanks to everyone who has donated vegetables, flowers and compost. The outdoor areas are developing really well and the children are so excited by the allotment, polytunnel and wildlife. The pond has toads and insects galore for whom the children have been creating bug hotels. This is a very busy term so please make sure you note down all the dates. The Jubilee memory tea is fast approaching so don't forget to let us know if you wish to attend using the online form on previous letter. Lost Property Please remember to name ALL items for your child - clothing, lunch boxes, drinks bottles. There is a box in main reception area if you wish to check for missing items.

Curriculum highlights - Year 1

Year one have been finding out about the amazing dinosaurs that once roamed the earth. We've used our bodies to make timelines of our planet, finding out that dinosaurs did not exist at the same time as humans, and learned what a palaeontologist does.&nbsp;In English, we have created brilliant dinosaur poems and performed dinosaur songs. With the help of Mrs Hughes, we have worked hard on our sketching skills, drawing dinosaurs and ammonites.

Many thanks to the Hall for Cornwall artist Matt Thomasson who gave the pupils an excellent singing workshop. This was followed by the staff singing tuition to increase our skills in teaching pitch and rhythm. It was pleasing (and rather surprising) that the end product sounded so melodic!

Curriculum highlights - Reception

Acorns have had a wonderful start to their 'Minibeasts and Big Beasts' topic. We have created a science area in our sensory garden filled with magnifying glasses, minibeast homes, a wormery and other scientific resources that inspire observation, discussion and experimentation. The children have demonstrated true care for our environment and we have some new classroom pets - caterpillars that we will watch, nurture and help turn into butterflies!

Curriculum highlights - Year 4

Early this term, year 4 completed their letters to a company of their choice to persuade them to change their policy on an issue surrounding single use plastic. We had letters written and sent to our local MP, Flambards, Plymouth Argyle and The Entertainer to name a few. We had a fantastic reply from the company who owns Flambards who have said they would stop using plastic cups and food containers when their current stock has run out. Little voices can make a huge difference. This term, we are learning about Romans and Rainforests! Ask your children how Rome was founded and why it has its name.&nbsp;

Exploring playtime "Playtimes are a lot better on the field because there is more space there. It is safer to do gymnastics on the field and children are happier with more space." "Much better that there is a quiet space at the bottom of the field." To look at together – when we are on the playground the amount of space there is. Pupil requests Need to have a box of book, colouring equipment to use. Would like a box of magnifying glasses and ‘spot 50’ books to be able to look for insects and flowers on the field. Would like more ‘science’ type clubs where activities are run and children can join in. Would like to use the ‘Willow Space’ as a ‘time out’ space and make sure adults are aware of why children might be there. Year 6 play leaders to set up activities for a different year group each day (not football days) so there are more activities to do. These are to be sent to classes to get whole school input on them.

Curriculum highlights - Year 3

This half term Rowan have been learning all about the world of predators and prey. In English we have been learning all about how to persuade and be persuasive writers. Fantastic Mr Fox has been our class text and around this, we have put ourselves in the farmers' shoes to try and persuade the villagers to join in with "The Great Dig!" We created some great posters for this using persuasive techniques. In Science we have been identifying that animals need the correct amount of nutrition and exploring the muscular and skeletal systems.

Lateness Pupils are expected to enter via the gates with their friends to class. If you are delayed please bring your child to reception and explain the reason for late arrival. Being on time supports your child's learning, calm entry into school and means all pupils can commence lessons together.

Reporting Absences If your child is going to be absent from school due to illness, then please inform the office before 9am in the morning, and let us know why your child is going to be absent, and when you expect them to return.
