2022-2023
Teacher: Edita Piilberg
Subject: English
Level: 4th Grade
Topic: A letter to Finn the dolphin
The lesson context: students learnt to use the future tense structure "be going to...", got acquainted with words describing the topic of sustainability, the environmental topics.
Description of the activities:
The teacher starts a conversation about the wonderful nature around us - blooming meadows, forests, rivers, oceans, wildlife. It is asked if the children have ever been to a dolphinarium. It is suggested to listen to the recording of the dolphins' "speech", the question arises - what are the dolphins talking about? Maybe someone understands the language of dolphins? Children express their thoughts, they come to the conclusion that Finn the dolphin wants to play and live in a clean sea. What could we do?
Students propose ideas to reduce pollution. While speaking, they use the structure "be going to" then they complete the task in liveworksheets https://www.liveworksheets.com/1-mt2419909cv and write down a few sentences of their choice into their notebooks.
After that, plickers cards are used for reinforcement, repetition and self-evalution https://www.plickers.com/seteditor/64690611f9da17482ff0d15b
Students have the opportunity to evaluate their progress.
Students get droplets that were cut out of used old covers of their noteboos that are not used any longer. These "droplets" are prepared to serve as sheets of paper for children's letters. The students choose a droplet they like and using collected from liveworksheets tasks sentences, write a letter to Finn the dolphin, in which they indicate which actions they plan to take to protect nature.
The teacher asks to read at least one written thought, good intentions are happily celebrated with clapping and students stick their letters on the board.

Students are divided into teams and play an interactive game using the bamboozle environment https://www.baamboozle.com/game/1607823. They discuss the content of the lesson, evaluate how they feel, what they liked, what was interesting, what was more difficult.
The children experienced the joy of learning, felt important and responsible for the goal they set for themselves, but also committed to protect the environment and live as sustainably as possible.
