Art as a Language was a project dedicated to students aged 13 - 15. The main objective was to allow students from different countries, backgrounds and beliefs to learn about other cultures and realize through art their common ideas, thoughts, wills, feelings, but also their differences. Through a song we told stories, through a dance we presented culture and through a painting we could demonstrate. Therefore, through a different context (dancing, painting, music, architecture) we were able to use all our senses and skills to form a kind of sensitivity to the beauty of the world. At the same time we shared and acknowledged the rich cultural, natural and historical heritage of Europe to which all countries contribute and to which we all belong.
At first we took a few snaps of imposing Gaudi architecture in Barcelona to see what splendid artworks people can do. Next we went on to practise stage movement while dancing Bulgarian folklore. Then we attentively listened to a Chopin concert at his birthplace in Poland, giving a tribute to his artistry. Finally, we photoed Cypriot artifacts and painted murals in a Cypriot-styed way. Meanwhile, at our schools, we did research on art and did art itself too.
The project was carried out transnationally so as to promote an open-minded attitude and help students learn about new cultures, try new things, accept and appreciate what differs. It was sometimes hard for students to explain everything verbally so the language of art came into use and bridged the gap between people of different origin and culture. That led to discover the importance of non-verbal communication as a way of individual expression or cultural enrichment. To perform the activities, students were encouraged to do teamwork and compete in nationally mixed groups. Exchanging information as well as discussing values led our pupils to recognize each other as members of the European community. Attention was also given to approaches that take a look at art education in terms of its opportunities for social inclusion. Each partner school had a lot to gain from this project because there was a lot to observe and get inspired from each other’s civilization and hospitality.
English as a foreign language was used for all written and oral contacts. It was our trip's main vehicle, we drove thanks to ICT and the journey hopefully spoke volumes of Art as a Language.
