Chromatography questions

Retention factor = Distance travelled by colour band divided by distance travelled by water

Using the ransom note (evidence):

1. Cut a strip from the ransom note. 2. Fill one glass halfway of water. 3. Place strip into glass with the bottom of the strip touching the water. 4. Fold the strip over the glass to hold the glass in place. 5. Leave strip in water for 5 to 10 minutes.

Ransom note investigation

1. Label suspects' pens: A, B and C 2. Grab a strip of filter paper. 3. Using one of the pens draw a horizontal line 2 cm above the bottom edge of the filter paper. 4. Repeat this process for the remaining pens. 5. Fill second glass halfway with water. 6. Place the filter paper strips in the water. 7. Fold excess paper over the side to hold the paper in place. 8. Leave for 5 to 10 minutes

Evaporation

1. Pour 50 mL of salt solution (from filtration) into an evaporating basin. 2. Place evaporating basin on top of the tripod and heat gauze. 3. Turn on the Bunsen burner. 4. Wait until water is fully evaporated.

How salty is this in comparison to sea water?

1. Fold the filter paper into quarters. 2. Place the filter paper into a glass funnel. 3. Place the glass funnel into a beaker. 4. Slowly pour the mixture into the glass funnel. 5. Leave for 7 minutes.
