GERO 2620 Therapeutic Arts with Older Adults

Course Description: This course explores the role of the creative arts in addressing unique issues of older adults. As a group, students will engage in a variety of expressive experiences, discuss the practical applications, and present in groups their creative endeavors. Students will review the literature related to the creative arts and the older adult, and will synthesize class learning in written papers and creative projects.
This class is one of the elective courses for the Gerontology (GERO) minor at Stockton. The GERO minor is a 20-credit interdisciplinary minor program housed in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. This minor is open to all students at the university, and complements major programs across the curriculum. This is a compilation of end of the semester projects by the Spring 2021 students in Therapeutic Arts with Older Adults. Two projects are being showcased: "Creative Ways to Change Thinking" and the "Isolation Art Challege."
At least one project by each of the students is included, some may have both projects included.
The "Creative Ways to Change Thinking" project is based on the Guerrilla Girls The Art of Complaining Project from the book “You are An Artist” by Sarah Urist Green.
The "Isolation Art Challenge" is based on the Getty Museum Challenge- having everyday people recreate famous works of art, at home!
At least one project by each of the students is included, some may have both projects included.

In Therapeutic Arts with Older Adults, we take the time to review a bit of gerontology, including neurocognitive disorders. The we discuss and research types of therapeutic arts, appropriate group types, and activities for each.
This course does have an Arts Attribute, but students are not graded on their artistic abilities, but their understanding of the process, research, and common practices appropriate for the older generations.
Thank you for taking the time to look through these students' pieces of art. Together, we have had a meaningful collaboration, and even shared presentations with SCOSA participants,though we met virtually for the entire semester! As always, I impressed by the students, and am proud to share thier final projects with you.

The directions given to the students: Choose something you learned about aging. Then design something that challenges ageism.
•Be bold Be brave
•Be sarcastic- or make a joke of it the assumed thinking
•Make it visually appealing
•Make sure your end result puts a positive spin on aging
