Have you ever imagined that the clothes you wear can have a severe impact on the environment?

Here is the fact, according to The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and National Geographic (2013), to produce a single t-shirt, about 2,700 liters of water are required, which is sufficient for one person to consume for 900 days.

Pretty shocking right?
Now think about how many clothes you have in your closet.

As well as the beauty of batik, it turns out that many small, even the big industries are not responsible for the waste produced.

According to the head of Solo Environmental Services named Gatot Sutanto (2021), A significant number of business proprietors in the screen printing or printing industry, among others, lack a proper waste management permit. Consequently, their waste is disposed of directly into the local drainage system and flows into the Bengawan Solo.

Of course, this pollution reduces the productivity of the Bengawan Solo River. Public awareness, especially those who own textile industries in Solo, is needed to help reduce the pollution of one of its vital rivers, Bengawan Solo.

The environmental impact of the textile sector has become one of the most worrying issues. It because they contribute much of waste, and it causes pollution to the environment.

Bengawan Solo is the one of the examples of the impact of the issue. Pollution occurs in the river water of Bengawan Solo due to the dye waste that is produced by the factories. Since the water in Bengawan Solo are contaminated by the dye waste, it brings impact such as skin diseases and unpleasant smell.

According to one of the residents named Giyam who lived in the village of Plesan, Sukoharjo. She said that her back was adversely affected by skin irritation after washing the muddy feet at times. Due to this, it is thought that river water has been contaminated by the waste. In addition to causing skin diseases, waste of PT Rum at Gupit river also causes unpleasant smells. This is complained by Ngepos citizen in Wonogiri. They say their water is polluted and it smells like Petai, which is probably caused by the RUM factory waste in the Bengawan river in Solo. It proven by the results of tests made by Chemical engineering laboratory, the faculty of engineering at Muhammadiyah Surakarta university.

According to Zakki Amali (2020), the sulfide deposits in each river are passing by quality standard. The quality standard should be at 0.3, while each river's content is 0.8, 0.6, and 1.0. Furthermore, the level of chemical oxygen requirements (COD) has also reached 958.8, which means it has already passed through quality standard,150 with a six-fold increase.

Many ways are done to process, utilize, and reduce dye waste. One way to reduce chemical liquid waste in the form of textile dyes is to use materials from nature that can be obtained from plant extracts from roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. The use of natural dyes for textiles and making motifs on textiles is called Eco Print. According to Erico (2019), Eco Print is a printing technique that uses natural dyes, which does not involve machines or chemical liquids. This is certainly very effective for reducing water pollution due to waste from chemical dyes because based on Musripah (2019) natural dyes have many advantages, including the color produced is more natural, and of course very friendly to the environment, and the level of danger of natural dyes is much safer than chemical / synthetic dyes.
