Going Coastal 2019

My name is Erin and I am 13 years old. I love to dance and draw. I am in a really cool program called PLP. In PLP we got to go on an amazing trip to Oregon and this book is about what we did in Oregon. 

I learned a lot of things at Fort Stevens state park and had a lot of fun. One of the things I learned was about how in the big room with the open roof that when the big gun goes off everyone has to leave the room and go to a safe place. If you stay in the room when it goes off because of how powerful it is you could die. I also learned that because that weapon was so powerful they had guards at the bottom of the stairs so no one who didn’t know what they were doing could go up to the room. I also learned a lot about the history of the fort and why they keep it locked all the time now. Part of the Fort used to not be locked all the time and because of that there was a lot of vandalism and part of it got set on fire. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

Our group did well R.O.V. Challenge. To assemble it we got ideas from other images and we used some of the shapes from them to. Our biggest challenge was figuring out how to balance it out in the water. Our R.O.V was either way to light or to heavy. The R.O.V would either stay up and float or sink to the bottom. Our group did really well with listening to each other but we went really slow. I feel that if we were a little bit faster it might have gone better

The Astoria column is 125 feet tall and is covered on the outside by a freize that depicts American history. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitors Center

I think that the reason that they have a tsunami machine in the visitors centre is because they are in a tsunami danger zone and sometimes people who live there need to learn how a tsunami is made, how to stay safe and what a tsunami is. Even though most people who live there know what a tsunami is and how to stay safe it is really cool to see how it works. Another reason why they have it might be because they can see what structures are more stable and will hold in a tsunami. They can use it to test to see which structure is the most durable and safe maybe a longer structure might work better than a wider one. 

Our group was a very interesting group we could work and cooperate really well together or we could get distracted very easily. On our second quest we assigned people different jobs and my job was to make sure our group didn’t get distracted. On the quest we had to find this rock and look underneath it for a letter and we walked right pass the rock and didn’t know and got distracted. I did my job and said that we had gotten distracted but that didn’t exactly work. Luckily the teachers gave us some clues and a second chance and we completed it. Our biggest weakness is getting distracted and not reading the clues very well. Our group is really good at communicating, listening and understanding each other. If our group is on task and not distracted then we can finish the quest. We learned to read the questions very closely and to try not to get distracted easily. We learned that when we are not distracted that we can do really well. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center Animal Adaptations

Every animal can adapt to their environment differently but there all very similar. Each animals process is different but it could be simple things like seeing what new things they could eat and what is safe to eat. Animals can also adapt physically by changing their colour to blend in to their surroundings. Some animal’s might try to blend in so their predators won’t see them. When animals adapt they may change their pray. 

 We were not aloud to take any rocks from this beach as the rocks were very different and unique. The beach is also a very natural habitat that is not to be used by humans so we can not take the rocks because it is part of the nature there. 

I am excited to see the wreck of Peter Iredale because I really like the story and history of it. To me the story and history are really interesting and I’d love to learn more about them. I think the site is really cool and there are not a lot of ship wrecks in Vancouver. 

I really want to see a water shrew because i think they’re very cute. Water shrew’s are small and cute and i think that it would be cool to see one in Oregon because they don’t live in Vancouver. Water shrew’s have large feet with hairy fringes and small eyes and ears.

I tried this new sauce that I had never tried before. It wasn’t my favourite thing but I ate it anyway.

I really enjoyed the spring rolls from Nisa’s Thai kitchen. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center Assemble a Whale

For the assembling a whale project we worked as a class. When we started we started with the spine as it would give us an outline on everything else. After that we added everything else like the ribs and stuff. It didn’t look exactly right so we went outside to see a fully built one and see what we did wrong and change it. Going outside to see the whale helped us a lot because we could see what it was supposed to look like and then compare it to our one. After changing it a few times we got it right. I think the could have listened a little better because everyone was kinda talking and it was a little harder to hear certain people. If everyone listened to each other I think we probably could’ve finished faster. When we disassembled the whale we had to put all the parts mixed up in different boxes so it wouldn’t be so easy for the next group. 

I think that the trek is Avery important place because it is a very natural habitat for all the wild animals that live there. The animals are normally in a little habitat but the raccoons have theirs open because raccoons will come back. The habitats provide safe natural places for the animals to live and the animals normally get a lot of food. It is really cool that we get to see the animals in their natural habitats. The habitats are really safe because there is no predators or prey. I think that the tram is really cool because we get to see animals in very open terrain.  They don’t put multiple different animals together they either have one alone or two or more of the same. I think that the trek is very cool because animals can come here when they are injured and finding a hard time hunting prey and stuff. 

Tillamook Cheese Factory and Izzy’s Buffet

They decided to create Tillamook cheese factory here because this area is very damp and will help the process. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center Speedy Science

We decided that we were going to do red crabs vs green crabs. We predicted that the red crabs would be faster because they seemed to move a lot more quickly in the tubs of water. The red crabs were also a little bit bigger than the green crabs.  Our predictions were right and the red crabs won. 

Columbia River Maritime Museum First Nations Section

When the first colonists came in there was a huge impact on the first peoples. The colonists took away all there traditions and celebrations and made them be like them. The first peoples had many traditions and a completely different way of life. The first colonists didn’t allow the first peoples to do anything there way. The first peoples used western red cedar for a lot of things like baskets, canoes and clothing. The first peoples also knew a lot about plants and berries. 

Cannon Beach is most well known for Haystack  Rock. It is sometimes called the third largest intertidal rock in the world.

I think that activities are more important to smaller towns because sometimes more people come to that town particularly for zip lining. I also think it’s important because it give them something raelly cool to do and have. They also have a really nice scenery. 

Columbia River Maritime Museum Crossing the Bar Section

I think I would cross the bar if there was a good reason for it. I wouldn’t cross the bar just for fun as it doesn’t look very fun or safe. If  it was a nice and sunny day and the water was very calm and there was a very good reason for me to cross the bar then i would. If it was a really rainy, stormy day and water was really rough and there wasn’t a good reason for me to cross the bar then I wouldn’t.
