John Cabot was a successful Italian explorer born in the early 1450s. Though he was born in Italy, King Henry had sponsored Cabot despite him living in England. Henry provided Cabot the resources he needed for exploring, and in return Cabot would collect spices, goods, and land for the King.
While exploring, John Cabot sailed on his boat “the Mathew” alongside 18 other crew members in 1497. However, Cabot was not in search for new land at the time.
His goal was to reward the king by finding a shorter route to Asia, providing access to gold, spices and other luxuries.
