What Motivates/Makes a Team
There are many factors that create and motivate a team. When it comes to virtual teams, there are similar principles compared to an in-person team while also having new principles. Understanding these principles allows teams to thrive in a virtual environment.
Communication Within Virtual Teams
Communication is one of the most important aspects of a successful team. Virtual teams usually communicate less frequently than in-person teams so it is important to have meaningful interactions between team members. There should be a set of rules that directs the team's communication. Watkins (2013) writes, "Create a charter that establishes norms of behavior when participating in virtual meetings, such as limiting background noise and side conversations, talking clearly and at a reasonable pace, listening attentively and not dominating the conversation, and so on." Creating norms allows teams to communicate effectively by making communication simple. There are many communication technologies out there that work for different types of teams. For example, Slack is a platform that allows teammates to communicate with each other through online messages. Another communication technology is Zoom which is a video conferencing tool that allows team members to speak face-to-face while still being in a virtual environment.

Communication can often lead to misunderstandings so it is important that team members communicate clearly with each other. A team needs a good process when it comes to communication such as making sure to use a certain form of communication. Frequent contact is important between team members so that they stay on the same page.

Clarification of Goals, Tasks, and Processes
A good team needs clear goals and roles as well as tasks and processes. Firstly, the main goal should be assigned to the whole team. Afterward, each member should be given a role with tasks that they are responsible for. A great team process allows group members to complete their tasks efficiently. Watkins (2013) states that "it’s important to focus more attention on the details of task design and the processes that will be used to complete them... And make sure that there is clarity about work process, with specifics about who does what and when." Since virtual team members are working in separate locations, a clear work process needs to be created so that each member knows what they need to do and when they need to do it. Levi says that "a task is meaningful when it provides the opportunity to use a variety of skills...Having interesting tasks allows a team to become more motivated to work" (Levi, 2021, p. 69). Teams are motivated to complete their tasks when the tasks are interesting and meaningful.
