Hatfield Marine Science Center Estuary Investigation

Citizen science is when ordinary people help scientists collect data. This is important because it helps scientists learn more about the world. Citizen science also helps people learn new things and connect with nature and their community. Projects can range from tracking wildlife to measuring air quality. Technology makes it easy for people to participate and share their findings. Citizen science is a collaboration between researchers and the public, which helps promote science in society.

I learned that different types of plankton are apart of our daily life. Carrageenan is that plankton, and you can find it in lots of things. It prevented ice cream from melting to fast, and it is a staple part of some lotions. It is an important ingredient in many products, and yet we never think about it. 

Columbia River Maritime Museum First Nations Section

When Oregon was colonized, the Chinook tribes were impacted deeply. They used the Western Red cedar trees for everything from canoes all the way up to hats as well as pelt and furs, being very prominent it their lives. This made their tribe interesting to the new comers, and the Chinook peoples were quickly moved from local trading posts, to posts all across the Globe. The colonizers took control of their land and resources, and started trading to China, England, New York, Hawaii and more places on the pacific coast. They established Astoria, a trading post in Oregon, and made trades with neighbouring businesses while keeping the further countries happy. This damaged the Chinooks culture and life, using their resources carelessly and treating the Chinooks land like their own.

They are fascinating creatures and their songs are very interesting. They swim in pods, so people se many at a time. I love whales and rarely see them, so hopefully we some in Oregon.

Cannon Beach is most well known for Haystack Rock. It is sometimes called the 3 largest intertidal rock in the world.

You are not allowed to take their rocka because of how rare they are. They are molted lava that were rounded by the sea,  which makes the beach extremely smooth. The rocks are a non renewable resources and are completely unique to Yaquina Head.

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

Explain how your group solved the R.O.V. Challenge. What challenges did you have? How did you overcome them? How did it perform in the end? What would you do differently next time? Write at least 9-12 sentences of reflection!

When we first got sorted ito our groups and read the instructions, we had no idea what our design would be. We started drawing a diagram, and soon it turned into the blueprint of a promising robot, or so we thought. After gathering all the pipes and ends to keep everything in place, we started assembling. However, it quickly became apparent that our design was not as effective as we had hoped. We had a lot of trial and error, trying different ways of attaching the magnet and adjusting the floties on top. It was frustrating, but we persisted, determined to create a functioning machine. After we finally attached the magnet in the right spot, we discovered that it only picked up one spoon. One spoon. It took us around 30 minutes to get that one spoon, and we knew we couldn&apos;t afford to start over and rebuild. We had to stick with what we had, a machine that wasn&apos;t very good. As we watched the other groups show off their impressive designs, we felt worse about our robot. But in the end, we learned an important lesson. It&apos;s not about having the fanciest design or the most extravagant machine. It&apos;s about simplicity and functionality. We may have had a bad machine, but we had a good learning experience.

Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitors Center

To show everyone the danger tsunamis bring. Since the Hatfield Marine Science Center is on the coast of Oregon, they are in serious trouble if a tsunami hits. This a high risk area, so they want to make sure people know what do to if one arrives. I think its a smart move on their behalf, teaching through fun activities to make sure the knowledge sticks.

Depoe Bay is known as the smallest navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan.

The Astoria Column is 125 feet tall and is covered on the outside by a frieze that depicts Oregons history.

Travelling South with a stop at Cabela&apos;s!

My video is showing all the cool and unusual things that we don’t usually see in Canada. We saw a gun library, cool fish, and a mountain with water and animals in the middle of the store! I thought its atmosphere was similar to a Pro Bass Shop, but it had more variety in guns and camothan any store I’ve seen. It was a great experience and wil definitely come back next time I’m in the US!

Wolf Haven is one of my favourite places we have visited so far. They give the wolfs room to roam, and treat them with the upmost respect. We went on a tour of the habitats, learned all about the prairies, and was taught how to identify different animal skulls. All the wolves have been brought here to live their fullest lives, some were born here, and some were brought in from dire situations. We also got to learn about the prairies,  and how many of the plants were used by First Nations for various purposes, which I thought was rather fascinating. They help to keep endangered species alive, and rescue them from extinction. Slowly, they are trying to make the world more habitable for wolves and other wildlife, and they have been trying really hard to achieve that goal. I think that without people who care so deeply about our wildlife, wolves and other animals would not have survived as long as they have.

Places like High Life Adventures, because they bring tourists in to spend money. It brings people from all over to experience their zip lining experience, and helps not only advertise their business, but Oregon as well. 

Hatfield Marine Science Center Speedy Science

Our hypothesis was that the bigger crabs would have a faster race time then the smaller ones. We used a runway with 1 sponge on each end, and used Esthers hand to slowly chase them down the track. We timed 2 big crabs, one male one female, and 2 small crabs, one male, one female! Our conclusion was that the big crabs did indeed move faster, but we also discovered that the males moved faster than the females. Overall, I think our findings were expected, and if we hade more time, we would test the gender difference more as well. 

In 1851, the first settlers in Tillamook Valley found a silver lining to the wet, cool climate. All that rain makes green, green grass, perfect for raising dairy cows. They started setting up, and raising cows to start their creamery. This made their lives a lot easier, and the foundation for the booming business that’s here today!

Columbia River Maritime Museum Crossing the Bar Section

I will not be crossing the bar. I don’t see the point in risking your life in a boat when you can just fly over it. Sometimes it is best to take a boat to get things from place to place, but going through the Columbia River Bar is basically asking for a death wish. You would have to pay me lots of money to do it. This is definitely not a good idea for me.

I learned all about the disappearing guns and how they work. They can’t be seen from the shore, which provides a sneaky and violent attack. They bullets are made with over 100 pounds of gunpowder in each shell, and are brought up using a conveyer belt on the ceiling of the bottom level. This gun is so big, it takes 30 - 35 people to load and fire 1 bullet, and 3 bullets are fired each minute. The main one is located on Battery Patrick, and can shoot up to 6 miles, going past the shore and into the water, insured to hit any enemies in sight. 

History of the lighthouse The Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Oregon is a remarkable structure built in 1872-73 to serve as a warning beacon for mariners. It was made in Paris and shipped to the Oregon coast, costing 11 thousand dollars. The lighthouse had to be kept burning at all times, and the light source was eventually changed from oil to electricity. It had a code to signal boats with two on, two off, two on, 14 off. Although shut down in 1966, it remains a popular tourist destination, and played an important role in observing and reporting events that could impact the coastline and mariners. It is a testament to human innovation and dedication, and its importance cannot be understated in the history of Oregon&apos;s shores.

Fun Facts - Yaquina Head Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. - The lighthouse is made of bricks and has a porcelain enamel exterior. - Yaquina Head Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. - Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a panoramic view of the coast. - The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1874, but was reactivated in 1996 as a private aid to navigation. - There is a visitor center at the site with exhibits about the history of the lighthouse and the surrounding area. - Yaquina Head Lighthouse is home to a variety of wildlife, including seabirds and harbor seals.

We improved a lot since last quest. The first time, we couldn’t even finish half, but this time we found the stamp and ran back. We stopped overthinking, stopped over complicating things, and slowly things started to click in our heads. It worked, and we figured it out, we just didn’t run fast enough.all of it was super fun, and we will have an easy time now. My group is pretty good at at problem solving, the first time we did it, we were just a little confused. Now, we have evolved as a group, and are ready for the next quest! We didn’t win, but we didn’t lose.  It’s definitely a improvement, and that is all the counts.
