What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Ireland? Let me guess, St. Patrick's Day, Guinness beer, music and Leprechauns. But what about the Great Famine, the division of Ireland, their independence and Northern and Southern Ireland? Nothing, right? Don't worry, because this article is going to inform you about everything you should absolutely know about Ireland's history. The Great Famine The Great Famine, also known as the Great hunger, was a disaster of mass starvation and diseases that hit Ireland between 1845 and 1849. As a result, Irish society experienced an important historical social crisis. Over the course of four years, the Irish Potato Famine killed about one million people and forced up to 2.5 million to flee or emigrate. It is believed that the short term cause of the famine could be attributed to the failure of the potato crop, which was caused by the potato blight. The potato blight is a fungus that destroys the leaves and the edible roots of the potato plant. Among the long term causes were an absentee landlordism system, which is a person who owns and leases property for profit but does not live in the local utility area of the property, and dependence on one crop. The Irish famine was the worst to occur in Europe in the 19th century. With an estimated 2.5 million refugees and a century long population decline, the Famine permanently altered the demographic, political and cultural landscape of the island. The division of Ireland When the Easter Rising failed in 1916, the Irish freedom fighters came up with something new. They wanted an armed resistance and a political campaign. The Irish founded their own parliament in 1919 and set up the Irish Republican Army. Up until 1921,British security forces were repeatedly killed by the Irish Army. Therefore, London invited a part of the Irish Parliament to stop the fighting. The long lasting negotiations resulted in a contract offering Ireland its own government, parliament and army. However, the contract did not only have positive aspects. It allowed Britain to have ultimate control over Ireland and the English Head of State remained the Irish Head of State, as well. What is more, the contract had the island divided into north and south. Republic of Ireland from 1937 until now Because of a new constituition, Ireland became the "Republic of Ireland" after having been a free state since 1921. Due to this change Ireland managed to resign from the Commonwealth a few years later. In the ensuing centuries one of the leaders of the independence war called Eamon de Valera took over several government agencies and even became president from 1959 to 1973. During his mandate conflicts in Northern Ireland about an alignment to the Republic started. The Catholic inhabitants of Northern Ireland wanted to join the Republic of Ireland while the Protestants wanted to stay with Great Britain. Finally, after several violent debates, things were settled with the „Good Friday Agreement". The government of the United Kingdom, the government of the Republic of Ireland and the political party of Northern Ireland compounded to stop the cruel conflicts and made a Multi Party Agreement.In the 90s Ireland had an economic rebound and grew into a modern state. After their financial crisis in 2007 and the admission to the Eurozone, Ireland is now on its way to recovery.◾

Other than the Aran Islands, there are also the Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs of Moher are the most famous cliffs in all of Ireland. You will arrive the cliffs by bus, which is a benefit since you should save enough energy for the coming uphill walk to the cliffs. After arriving at the cliffs, themselves, you will be rewarded for the energy spent with a stunning view of the cliffs and on sunny days with a clear view into the deep blue ocean. Overall, it was an incredible experience, which cannot be properly put into words, only witnesses by oneself. On this trip, we all grew closer in our own individual ways and it’s sure to say that we’ll forever cherish the experienced memories.◾

Galway is worth a visit as a small vibrant city, filled with music, art and culture. On every corner you can find bands and artists that impress passer-by with amazing skills. Even if the town is small, it`s not that touristy and you can easily enjoy all the attractions while sitting in a bar or restaurant beside the main street. They offer a wide range of food from all over the world. Every person will find something they like in Galway and will have an easy time meeting new people, since everyone there is very open minded and polite.◾

A collection of our favorite sights and activities

Personally, I really liked Galway, but my personal highlight was the trip to the Aron Islands and on the way there we saw three dolphins swimming next to us. On the Aron Islands we borrowed bikes, with which we drove around and discovered the surrounding. In our group we stopped at a sea access and there we filmed our video and the landscape was incredible. Everywhere were rocks and shells. In our group we really had a lot of fun and enjoyed the day. -Ayomi&nbsp;&nbsp; My favourite sight was the National Art Gallery of Ireland. I liked it a lot, because it has about 14000 different artworks, including 2,500 oil paintings, 5, 000 drawings and 5, 000 prints. A specificpiece of art that I fell in love with there was Thomas Hickey`s painting “ An Indian Lady”, which is exhibited in the gallery. I absolutely recommend visiting the art gallery&nbsp; when you are in Ireland, because it will blow your mind. -Ajla One of my favourite activities was us visiting Malahide Castle. The tour guide led us through the castle and let us know to not hold onto any of the items on display,like 800 year old wooden chairs. As the tour in the castle got to its end,the guide asked us to look out for one of the three ghosts in the castle. Her name is“Lady in white”and she haunts the staircase which leads from the dining hall as well as the old, beautiful library up tho the bedrooms which&nbsp; offer an unbelievable dreamy view over the property. Lastly we headed towards the stunning gardens and greenhouses where a butterfly landed on my finger. -Anna Our journey in Ireland was packed with fun activities, which is why I had a hard time deciding on my favourite one. In our ten days there I was able to get an amazing impression of Ireland and its’ inhabitants. In addition I’ve learned many new items of vocabulary and about cultural differences. However, the most fun for me was definitely our trip to the Aran Islands. After a ferry took us to the island, we rented bikes to explore the landscape. While we had a good time riding our bikes along the road next to the sea we also had to make a short film about any topic we wanted. My teammates and I won the first place with our short movie about a plane crash. At the end of our tour Brian, our busdriver, took us back to our hostel in Galway. By the time we arrived home everybody had fell asleep. -Nele One of my favorite sights were the Cliffs of Moher. Simply because the view was beautiful and I find it incredible how something like this comes out of nature. Furthermore, I liked the bike tour on the Aran island. We saw seals and dolphins which I found really great and the landscape was beautiful too.&nbsp; - Raphaela

Gather the ingredients. Preheat the oven to&nbsp;350&nbsp;F/180&nbsp;C/Gas Mark 4. 1.&nbsp;In a large frying pan, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil until its hot but not smoking. Add half of the lambpieces and brown all by turning the pieces over in the hot oil. 2. Remove the lamb pieces with tongs and place them in an ovenproof stockpot. 3. Cover with half of the potatoes, half of the carrots, half of the onions, and half of the leeks.

4.Add the remaining oil to the frying pan and heat it. Do the same with the remaining lamb and brown all over as before and add it. 5.Cover with the remaining potatoes, remaining onion, remaining leeks, and remaining carrots. 6.&nbsp;Add the flour to the still-hot frying pan and stir really well to soak up any fat and juices. Cook over low heat for 3 minutes. 7.Add the stock a ladle at a time and mix until you have a thick, lump-free sauce. You will not add all of the stock. 8.Pour this sauce over the lamb and vegetables. 9. Add the remaining stock, cover with a tight-fitting lid, and cook in the preheated oven for 1 hour. 10.Add the cabbage (if using), replace the lid, and cook for another hour. Check from time to time to make sure the stock hasn't reduced too much. If it has, add a little bit boiling water. The meat and vegetables should always be covered in liquid. If the sauce is too solid at the end, you can always cook the stew a little longer with the lid removed. 11.&nbsp;&nbsp; Season with salt and pepper. Serve piping hot and enjoy. If you want to you can now serve it with mashed potatoes and crusty bread.

Are you interested in art? Undoubtedly, Dublin has beautiful and amazing art, which you have to see.

Amazingly, you can find many types of art, like modern art, old art, street art, photography and spiritual art. You can not only see art you can also listen to good music in the city. The best place to enjoy art is the National Art Gallery of Ireland situated in the capital city, Dublin, which is the perfect destination for art lovers. The reason for this is because there are over 16. 300 artworks from famous artists like Picasso, Mantegna, Monet and Titian. Also, photography, sculptures, prints, archival and bibliographical materials are part of this wonderful art collection. Surprisingly, this collection connects the history of Western European art from 1300 to the present day. Other places where you can listen to art are the streets and the pubs, especially in Dublin and Galway. The musicians from the streets are called “Buskers”. In recent years, becoming a street musician has become more and more popular. Because of that, gradually more restrictions have been introduced for Buskers. Nowadays, Buskers have to master at least 20 songs and pay a few euros so they can play. --&gt;

LUKE KELLY One famous Irish singer was Luke Kelly who lived from 1940 to 1984. He was born into a poor family in the northern part of Dublin. His parents worked in a biscuit factory where he joined them to help out his family. He eventually got fired and started his career as a singer and banjo-player. In 1962 he and two friends formed a band called the “Ronnie Drew ballad group”, of which the name later was changed to “the Dubliners”. Their worldwide success took off in 1967 with the song “Molly Malone” although they did have many other successful hits. Luke Kelly died 1984 of a brain tumor of which symptoms had been diagnosed to excessive drinking.

OSCAR WILDE Anotherfamous artist is Oscar Wilde. He was a famous writer who was born in Dublin on the 16 October 1854. After school and literature studies he settled down in London and went to the Oxford university. As a poet, novelist, playwriter and critic he became one of the best-known writers in Victorian Great Britain. He wrote books like “The Works of Oscar Wilde” or “The importance of being Earnest” and much more. His wife Constance Wilde was a British children’s book author and had two kids with Oscar Wilde, named Cyril Holland and Vyvyan Holland. Because Oscar Wilde was gay, he got sentenced to forced labour. After his release he lived impoverished in Paris where he died at the age of 46. So, if you fancy to see amazing art and listen to overwhelming music, then visit Ireland. You won’t regret it.

Thinking about the most popular Irish traditions, Saint Patrick’s Day is the first thing to come to one’s mind. It is celebrated on the 17th of March and not only in Ireland, but also in America and England. It is celebrated, because of the patron saint to the country Patrick of Ireland.&nbsp;&nbsp; Surprisingly the tradition of Halloween also has its origin in Ireland. It used to be a tradition to keep away bad spirits and ghosts. With people from Ireland emigrating to America, the custom has changed and is now celebrated by the famous trick or treating and dressing up as scary characters.&nbsp; Our host parents also told us about the famous culture night and fortunately it was held the last day of our stay. We were looking forward to it all week. We stayed in Dublin a little longer than usual and were stunned by the great live music, playing in every alley. The museums were for free, and the vibe was incredible. We even went to a pub and enjoyed the live music there as well.&nbsp; Ireland is well known for a self-created sport, named Gaelic football. It is way more popular than regular football and even has its own fields, designated to the sport. It is pretty much like Rugby. One is allowed to keep the ball moving, with hands and feet.&nbsp;&nbsp; Now we are reaching our last and favourite part of our article: Irish food. The dishes mainly consist of potatoes, that’s mostly because of the Irish famine. In the mornings Irish people sometimes enjoy the so-called Irish breakfast, which includes toasted bread, sausages, beans, tomatoes, bacon and eggs. As for drinks they enjoy breakfast tea, which is simply black tea. They have simple lunches and prefer a big dinner. The dinner is usually set earlier, namely around six thirty. Our favourite recipe is potato pancakes. It is very similar to the Austrian Kartoffelpuffer, and one may also call them Hash browns. You put the already cooked mashed potatoes (preferably 36 ounces) into a bowl and add the following ingredients: six ounces of yellow onions, a teaspoon of salt, one large egg, one ounce of corn starch, a quarter teaspoon of black pepper, one ounce of oats. Put the mixture in a pan and fry it until it gets a nice golden colour. And then, enjoy!&nbsp; To sum it up Ireland has some nice traditions and especially different food. We also realized that Halloweens origin is in Ireland. The amazing culture night takes place once year and we were able to be there. Lastly Irish people even have their own sports, Gaelic football.&nbsp;&nbsp;◾

Since we spent ten days in Ireland, we are Körösi’s Irish culture-specialists. We talked a lot with our host parents about the typical Irish traditions and habits. Undoubtedly, music has a very high standing in Ireland’s society. Ireland is the only country, that has an instrument as their national symbol - a harp or in Gaelic ''Cláirseach''. That's how much they value their music. Irish folk music uses at least 10 different instruments, and is preferred to be performed by solo artists, even though bands are common as well. There is different music for singing, like Sean-nós songs, which are unaccompanied vocals or Caoineadh songs, which are usually about pain and sorrow, as well as songs specifically for dancing. Among the most famous Irish folk songs you may find '' Whiskey in a Jar'' or '' Molly Malone''. Not only the music is well known all around the world, but also the legend of St. Patrick. Since people had to leave Ireland back in the 1960’s, traditions- transferred by refugees- took over in other destinations. The so-called National Day of Ireland is celebrated on the 17th of March. In addition to that people (even in America) throw huge parties and parades, where people drink many pints of Guinness, Whiskey and Irish Stew. Indeed, New York even colours the Chicago River in Irelands national colour- green! Furthermore, it’s common to wear green clothes, green hats and you possibly might meet a little leprechaun holding a green beer. Looking back in history, the Irish were starving because of the famine caused by a missing potato crop. As you can imagine, potatoes are mandatory in an Irish kitchen and of course in Irish stew. The original Stew is cooked with mutton and potatoes in soup. Controversy reigns over weather adding other vegetables than potatoes or even which meat is used (there is also a vegetarian variety). Furthermore, it is served with mashed potatoes (what a surprise) and crusty bread that isn’t really comparable to the “dark bread” we are used to, since it tastes a bit sweeter and is not as dark as ours. Also don’t forget to enjoy your stew with a nice pint of Guinness. If you want to enjoy an Irish stew on cold weather, feel free to try out our recipe at the back. As you can see, Ireland has a variety of cultural aspects. Music, the different instruments, St. Patrick's Day including the famous Guinness and Whiskey, celebrated all around the globe and national food are only a few of the interesting traditions of Ireland. It is worth seeing and trying them all!!! ◾

When we first arrived in Ireland, we headed to Western Ireland right on our first day. After a night at the hostel there, our bus driver Brian picked us up and from there we started our trip to the Aran Islands. What’s so special about the island is that you can only go there by a ferry. When you walk along the little haven, there is a bike rent. You also get a map that shows you the intermediate and the beginner route for the bike tour over the island. Starting with the intermediate route will give you a rough start, but also a great reward. After the village and the beautiful landscape, you will end up in a small village. Near there is a way that you can walk up, and you’ll get to an old building which is falling apart, but there are cliffs right there that are very beautiful. On the beginners’ route, on the way back, you can start relaxing. As you cycle along the coast of the island, you may also stumble across a seal colony, where you can sit and relax while watching the beautiful view of Ireland. ◾

The day we went to the Aran Islands was a very fun day. We went there on a ferry and saw some dolphins in the sea. Irish nature was breathtaking. The view from the Cliffs of Moher was also very nice. But the thing I loved the most was when we had free time and were allowed to roam around Dublin.- Shania &nbsp;My favourite sight was the Aran Islands. The scenery was beautiful and I was happy to see seals, since they are on of my favourite animals. Even though we couldn’t find the way to see the cliffs, we found other beautiful places such as cute little brick houses and a beach where seals rested. There were also a lot of farm animals around, including a horse that came up to us to be pet. -Sonja &nbsp; The 10 days in Ireland were really fun and the places we visited were amazing but personally the best sight we went to were the “Cliffs of Moher”. At the cliffs you have an amazing view onto the sea and the fresh air is really delightful. The “Hop on Hop off” bus-tour we went on was amazing as well. I visited every important place in Dublin that everybody told me I have to go to. Nearly every day during my time in Dublin I went to an Arcade with my friends. It was always lots of fun and I definitely have to go to one in Graz with my friends as well one time. It definitely was a quite enjoyable time and I really miss my daily routine and seeing all my friends every day. - Michael The best place you can visit in Ireland is the Aran Islands. The Aran Islands are a top attraction for many visitors, because the three islands on the West Coast are exactly what one would picture Ireland to look like: Ireland is known for its wide green fields and bold cliffs, both of which you can spot on a bike tour on the Aran Islands. Furthermore, you can experience the unique stone walls that are build on the green fields all over the Islands. Not to mention that the Aran Islands are a great way to escape the city stress and spend a day on the sandy beaches, you might even get to see seals or dolphins if you are lucky. All these special characteristics are a great reason to visit the Aran Islands on your stay in Ireland. - Helena It’s hard to decide what I liked most about the trip since, everything was wonderful. But if I had to choose, it would honestly be the ride on the ferry. Even though the weather was cold, with the warm sun it was really nice. Standing or sitting under the sun with a cool breeze and a more than wonderful view ahead of us. How could this not be perfect? Sounds romantic, doesn’t it? I’m quite sentimental so moments like these give me peace of mind. But there is also something I absolutely loved and that’s Galway. The street filled with restaurants and musicians that play jazz, people who listen and laugh with honesty. There is nothing that makes me more happy than such moments and places in the world. - Maria There are so many beautiful places in Ireland, you can’t visit them all in one week. The Aran Islands are such a beautiful piece of nature. You have an amazing view on the sea and also the Cliffs of Moher and you can even spot some seals on a few places. It feels really peaceful and there aren’t a lot of tourists. Probably because it’s a bit complicated to get there. However, it’s totally worth it. The landscape is so astounding and there are a lot of cows and donkeys running around. You can go on cycling tours and horse-drawn carriage rides as well. If you want to go and visit Ireland I would definitely recommend to you to go there. - Marie The Aran Islands are a small island group at the westernmost end of Ireland. On our three day trip through Ireland they were undoubtedly the most beautiful, idyllic place we saw, shaped by an impressive landscape, ancient buildings and handmade stone walls. They’re housing an amazing wildlife of seals and birds as well as lots of cattle. Ashore the islands you can feel the change in atmosphere and will progressively get into a more relaxed mood the more time you spend on it. The population consists of a mere 12,000 inhabitants, who speak Gaelic as their first language, which further adds to the island’s flair. Being on the Aran Islands is an experience not many places can offer anymore. - Stefan &nbsp; The best way to spend your time on a free day in Dublin is definitely visiting the VanGogh museum. The Vincent VanGogh exhibition contains paintings all around you. My friend and I decided to spend a whole morning in the 360° exhibition. Not only where famous paintings set up as a room that you can walk into and “feel” the work, but also a video-room that showed some of his paintings in the chronological order they were painted. Sometimes, they even moved. Furthermore, we learned a lot about his life and how tough the time he lived in really was. All in all, we can only recommend visiting Dublin’s exhibitions.- Sabrina

Unsurprisingly Ireland has many beautiful and stunning sights. There are so many different things to see like museums, cliffs, sculptures of famous people, or even the Irish landscape is very enjoyable. The Aran Islands are one of the most beautiful islands I have ever seen. Fortunately there are many options of hiring a bike to experience the isle. Furthermore, you have the chance to see many sweet animals around it, like horses, cows and even seals. Undoubtedly an unforgettable adventure. Another of my favourite sights are the Cliffs of Moher. These stunning cliffs have a height of 214 meters and they look really similar to the cliffs in the Harry Potter films. When people want to visit Ireland, I would definitely recommend seeing the cliffs of Moher. It a unique experience. As a result, Ireland is a very beautiful country to visit and a must for any travel enthusiast. - Markus My favourite sight was the garden of Malahide. There was a house full of butterflies and their colours were really beautiful. Msy second favourite activity was the bike tour ión the Aran island. Although I don’t like riding a bike. Unlike Austria, in Ireland the shops are open on Sundays. We took the chance and spent our free Sunday at one of the two big shopping streets of Ireland.&nbsp; It took us forty minutes to get to Henry street, but it was absolutely worth it. There were countless shops&nbsp; and all of us spent a huge amount of money. - Leonie Ro. The best thing, about our journey was spending time with my friends. Firstly, it was very fun to travel together with friends because we laughed a lot. Secondly, we got to live together with a host family. Thirdly we came up with many new insider jokes. Moreover, it was my favorite aspect, because you usually don’t have the time and the opportunity to spend that much time with your friends. To sum up, spending time with my friends abroad was the best part of the trip for me personally. - Theresa My favourite journey during our stay was the trip to Malahide castle. The first impression was amazing. I had never seen such a big park like at Malahide castle. Our tour guide, Mark, told us a lot of interesting facts about the castle. But I liked the picture with the family the most because the eyes from the children followed you around. The story about the ghost which was called „the white lady“ got stuck in my mind, too. I would really recommend the trip to the castle to everybody.&nbsp; - Jasmin To pick a favourite activity or impression of our journey is nearly impossible. I’ve got to admit, I enjoyed every bit of our trip to the land of sheep and leprechauns. From driving around in the unknown environment, over counting sheep and cows along the rickety roads, staying in a somewhat premium hostel in Galway, cycling around the Aran Islands, wandering along the Cliffs of Moher, and playing quite strange games with Brian our language school teacher, to having dinner with our host parents and walking around the many parks with our friends. Seriously, I can’t pick. I am very lucky to have made such great experiences and will treasure those memories for as long as possible. We were just exploring the city and mostly looking for some food, because we were always hungry. My favourite restaurant was a mexican restaurant called ‘‘Tula“. We ate tacos and quesadillas and they were delicious.- Ana We did so many cool activities that I can’t decide which I liked the most. We visited the Cliffs of Moher, a spectacular view, we explored Galway and saw its differences to Dublin, but the activity most spectacular in my opinion was when we went on an Island near Galway where we could cycle around. The reason for that is because we were able to see real wild seals and dolphins. However, Dublin was also interesting with its big shopping malls hidden in small old buildings as well as The Spire, a huge 120m high pole going up into the air in the center of Dublin. I also heard they color it like a lightsaber when a new Star Wars movie is released. - Marc Ireland was a fun and interesting experience. I also learned a lot about the history of such a beautiful country. But from all the places we visited Galway was my favourite. Not only was it a charming city but also the food I ate there on my first day was amazing. The youth hostel we slept in wasn’t luxurious, but it was better than my host family in Dublin. My friends and I went also to an arcade. It was the first time for me ever to go to an arcade and I had a lot of fun. - Georg Ireland is a country with the most beautiful landscape and breathtaking sights. I found it is no news that the landscape in Ireland is beautiful and the sights are unique.&nbsp; There are beautiful sights in Ireland. One of my favorites are the Cliffs of Moher. They are beautiful the view is breathtaking and there are two sides of view. There is a very nice museum and café.&nbsp;Another place of interest is Malahide Castle. This Castle is haunted by 4 ghosts, also the castle has pictures that always turn towards you and always look at you no matter where you go. The castle has also a beautiful garden. If you want to see a beautiful landscape then the Aran Islands are perfect. The you can make a bike tour around the island, you can see donkeys, horses, beautiful birds and seals there. There are also very beautiful cliffs to visit. So if you want to fly to Ireland to see a lot I can definitely recommend it. - Bianca The Cliffs of Moher are one of the most popular places for tourists. They amazed me immediately because of their height and beauty. Moreover, one of my favourite movies was directed at these cliffs. Furthermore I really enjoyed Galway because of the music. In every corner there was playing an Irish band. This city was full of alive. Compared to Dublin, Galway is a quite city. Dublin is teeming with pubs and every alley is crowded. People from all over the world walk in these alleys. The city seemed very colorful and diverse to me. A well known meeting point is the spire. It is 120m high, this is why nobody can overlook it. However my, biggest highlight were the Aran Islands. I especially enjoyed the nature and the beaches. It was a wonderful moment when I saw&nbsp; dolphins and seals. What makes the news and media in Ireland so different from other countries? Although Ireland’s population is relatively small, it benefits from a rich media environment. The media consists of twelve national newspapers, four national television stations, five national radio stations and countless regional newspapers and radio stations. Not to mention the growing presence of Irish citizens on social media. The most popular newspaper is “the Irish Sun” and the “Irish Daily Star”. A well-known Irish radio station is the “RTÉ Radio 1” and the most popular television station is called “RTÉ One”. As reported by the national newspaper of Ireland, approximately 91% of Irish adults regularly read newspapers, which makes it the most popular media there. They are always designed the same way, the most important news, the most eye-catching images and headlines are displayed on the front page. Depending on the targeted readership, those can be different on every newspaper. Inside the newspaper the sections are arranged according to their seriousness, for example national news will be reported before international news. As in most countries, sport is very well covered in the media in Ireland. The latest results of any soccer, boxing, football or rugby games are prominently displayed on every news website. It is also quite noticeable, that a lot more crimes are covered in the Irish media than in Austria. You can read about several murders, robberies and accidents solely on the first page. In conclusion, you can generally assume that Ireland is more interested in the news, because they report things that are better received by the readers. Bad news are always more interesting to them than good news. Additionally, the newspapers and also websites are designed in a way that the most alluring things are more prominently advertised. To sum it up, Irish people just know how to smartly structure and proclaim their news. --
