This eBook contains a few tipps how to make your schools more eco-friendly. After two years working on this project, schools from Croatia, Germany, Latvia and Spain came up with the following ideas:

Schools for future

In Croatia, there was a competition about the best awareness poster and many pupils participated.

Last but not least we present the most important day of our project, the day of Europe. It connects the whole continent and reminds of the founding of the European Union. The day took place the 9th of May.

In Dezember the croatian students created an advents calender were each day it showed them an eco friendly activity to do.

For Exempel to dispose properly their batteries or to avoid unnecessary  trash for a day.

For this topic we also wanted to do something for our environment and nature. Based on that, every school tried to take further their exterior designing to give nature something back. The students developed different projects to reshape the school yard. In the end, the results were very impressive and it will probably please for a long time to come.

During this exchange students learned that through trash you can create beautiful art. On a trip to a waste museum, we got to know a man who collects trash and transforms it into something creative.

During our welcome ceremony in Croatia, students used glass bottles, that you would usually just throw away, to make music.

For creating awareness, the schools in the Erasmus+ project made great example for recycling and reusable things.

During the whole year it is important to create spots for the birds where they can rest and feed.

We did a project where we tried to make our classrooms more lively and green so that the classrooms don’t look monotonous and boring. Plants are also very important for the air we breathe and they can help our brains to concentrate.

5 Reasons to Bring Plants Into the Classroom

Lately, there has been a glass box in the German school where students and teachers have been collecting crown caps so they won‘t be thrown away.

The Latvian pupils collected 21 kilograms of old batteries. These batteries were donated to a company that recycles them and the school intends to participate in this activity every year from now on.

For the past years we were using reusable cups at events like concerts or festivals. For some it is a small step but we see it as a huge step into a better future where we don’t use plastic bottles. But you can hardly imagine how many coffee to go cups are used every day. Here you have a number: 460,000 coffee to go cups are used every day just in Berlin.

Climate change impacts on the environment and we already have some ideas to help. Another idea to make schools more eco-friendly is that you can plant a school garden. This is an idea where also younger students are integrated. We already had some ideas to make our school greener. The school garden was one of them. The participants from the Erasmus+ Projekt wanted to show the students that you can grow your own plants and vegetables, and what you have to do to get a final result. The students of grades 5 and 6 of our school have to take care of the plants and learn to be responsible. With this project the children from our school can learn that taking care of a part of nature is more work than it looks like. The young students already had so much fun planting the plants and vegetables and are excited to try them when they are grown.&nbsp;

Another idea is to organize a collecting trash day. Some people meet and walk through the city. With tongs, gloves and garbage bags you are able to help your local environment by picking up every piece of trash you can see. With this event, you can also raise the awareness of the trash problem.

Why not create reusable Christmas trees if we need it again every year? It is pretty and this reduces the deforestation of trees.

There are also lots of days that remind of the importance of the nature and the earth. These days are used to show the people, that our earth needs to be protected.

The first day we want to present is the Water day. The water day is supposed to show the people how to take care on our consume of water and how to conserve it.

The Croatians focused on the importance of groundwater and made experiments so the younger students can get an image of how important it is.

The Latvian students prepared a poster to create awareness for the topic.

During a workshop, our pupils made beautiful bug hotels which will be put around our school garden. With the help from our janitors, who made the frames, our pupils brought leaves, sticks, straw, cones and bamboo sticks and made the bug hotels. The biology teacher explained the importance of the bees and other insects that live in our gardens.

Trash awarness day &amp; not using plastic day

If you don't have that much space at your school, you can also plant a herb garden. The herbs can be used at your school canteen and the students also learn how to take care of it.

In the different countries we talked about the importance of separating trash. It is very important, that the schools have different bins to divide the trash and be able to recycle some of it.

With this event we were able to collect 11.350 euros, which we donated to a German organization called “BUND”. This organization is part of the world’s largest environmental network (“Friends of the Earth”). BUND is committed to preserving biodiversity, protecting the climate and consumer rights.

During the project, the students came up with many ideas how to create awareness about climate change and what to do about it.&nbsp; The Croatian students created stickers, to put above sinks and light switches, that will remind you to turn them off after you have used them.

You can also do fundraising runs. Students search for donors to sponsor them, then everyone runs as much as they can. They get money from their sponsors depending on how much they ran.

In the German School they organized a fundraising run in the stadium. Everyone from grade 5 to 9 took part in it. The students got money from their donors for every round they ran in the stadium. Everybody was very motivated to collect money for the environment organization we chose.

We also tried to encourage more students to go by bike to school or use public transportations instead of cars. Therefore we improved the possibilities to park bikes at our schools. We created more space and build roofs for the bikes, so they won't get wet in case of bad weather.
