This doll was probably sewn by a Herero girl on a mission station in Otjimbigue in the 1870s. A missionary traded his cattle for 118 items, including this doll. She shows us how the missions brought not only the Bible and the handicraft technique of sewing, but also a whole new concept of people to Namibia. That also meant changing clothes.

Virtual Trip&nbsp;September + October 2021

In 2021, our request for financial support is answered with a YES! ENSA, the organization of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development that funded several projects in our school exchange in past years, has chosen our project. We can rely on a large sum of money for the encounter. Without ENSA, the school communities in Windhoek Katutura and in Berlin Neukoelln wouldn’t make it to raise the necessary amount of money. But… Due to Covid 19 restrictions, we have to reschedule our plans. Traveling is no longer possible. ENSA launches a new idea: the virtual trip.

Each group can carry out activities in their own country and report to the others, contributing to the common topic of “FOOD FOR FUTURE”. Thanks to digital media we can get intense insights into the far-away partner country, present each other our discoveries and conclusions and get together in videoconferences to discuss essential questions. In this way, we can learn a lot from each other. With ENSA at our side, in Berlin we are even supported by an expert consultant who joins our activities and connects our approaches with his experiences. The ENSA funds, in large part sent to the Hage Geingob School, enable our Namibian partners to explore the natural and geological beauty of their country and even start a small “living” business.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In this video Lilith explains the cycle of seeds in traditional farms. We learnt that in the globalized agricultural systems the farmers aren´t able anymore to use their own seeds.

There is a little garden in the middle of Berlin, it's at a size of 2000 mq. It is not just a random number, but actually it is the area of agricultural space on our planet divided by the number of people on the world. So this number, 2000 mq, is the area that every human has for themselves on the planet. Infact there is enough space but as we know, the food distribution isn't equal for everyone. The Global North consumes a lot more than the Global South.

This picture represents the loss of biodiversity by common crops in the last century. For example, 1903 commercial seed houses offered 544 varieties of cabbage, but 1983 only 28 varieties of cabbage were found.

Germany has still some signs of the colonial time. Which you can see for example in the names of the streets of Wedding or a quarter, called "African Quarter".

Lüderitzstraße: Adolf Lüderitz was a German businessman and general. He deceited the Namibian people when he bought land, because he used the German mile. His counterparts ended up losing a lot more land than they had expected. M*strasse: M* is an discriminative and abusive way to call African people. Today this word is not anymore acceptable and most of the people in Berlin want to change the name of the street. They also over painted the street names, so that you can't read them anymore. Still many streets in Germany are called after colonial warriors and leaders. The idea is, changing the names to people who were victims of the apartheid.

Team building activities. The participants took on a challenge to build a tower. The winning team is the one which built a strong and tall tower. It was an amazing exercise and we came to the realization that together we can build a better world! fair for everyone.

Our first step in the food for future projekt

We visited a school farm in the schoolneighborhood

Apples and Potatoes &nbsp; The August-Heyn-Gartenarbeitsschule is a big area where regional fruits and vegetables grow in biological conditions. The apple trees are not treated with chemicals and there are many different kinds of apples. First we tasted some different apples. It was very surprising that they all tasted differently. We saw a flock of sheep. They were really sweet and there was also a trestle. Then we visited the garden of herbs, spices and odors and saw some beehives. Later we were able to harvest a crop of potatoes, which you can see in the video. After that we walked through a vegetable patch and we saw some tomatoes, eggplants, corgettes, parsley and different types of pepper. At the end we washed the potatoes, cooked them and made the typical german dish, called „potatoes with quark“. &nbsp; Quark is a fresh cheese, that is not salty. We cut parsley and chives and put them in the quark.

Fish River Canyon is located in the Ai /Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park in the southern end of Namibia, close to South Africa. It is the Grand Canyon of Africa, one of the biggest in the world.

The stone commemorates the military officer corps as heroes.

The research projects carried out at Leibniz Institute aim at gaining knowledge about plant growth in difficult conditions. For example: How will the plants reach to the lack of water, or to huge quantities of water, or to artificial light? A young scientist presented her cultivation of tomatoes that she provided with filtered blue and red light, in order to reproduce indoor farming conditions with LED lights. The idea is that in the near future agricultural spaces won´t be enough, therefore the project considers tunnels and underground halls to grow vegetables. Another ambitious research project called "Food for Future" focuses seaweed, jellyfish and crickets as the new protein sources. The researcher suggests crickets can be ground up to flour, jellyfish can be eaten as dried chips and seaweed makes a fabulous pesto.

We had a Cultural exchange on the last day during our stay at Ai-Ais. The participants were representing different cultures and traditions within Namibia. Here Fenn Paulus is representing the Aawambo culture, Ujama is representing the Herero culture and Lydia is representing the Caprivian Masubia culture. 

Namibia is a country of diverse cultures and we reaffirmed our commitment and respect towards cultural diversity.
