The shapes in our lives
-eTwinning project-

October 2022 – June 2023
This book is one of the final products of “The shapes in our lives” project which was created in honour of the great Romanian mathematician Gheorghe Țițeica because our school is named after him. He had important contributions in geometry and is recognized as the founder of the Romanian school of differential geometry. We intended to show our students how the world of geometry and shapes is connected with other areas of our lives. This geometrical perspective on reality which the project brought into students’ lives not only improved their sense of mathematical order, but also enabled their use of imagination and creativity while dealing with the shapes around them.

What do you see when you look around? A world  of shapes...
Our houses – rectangles and squares.
Our cars – circles and rectangles.
Our toys – triangles and diamonds.
Everything around us is a combination of different shapes. We learnt them while studying Maths and started noticing that they really exist in almost everything we see, touch and use. They come in different colours and sizes, so if you look closely and carefully, you will come to the conclusion that our world is made up of shapes.
The first challenge was to identify them in our everyday lives. The next step was to fill in these shapes with thoughts and words that were inspired by each particular shape and also by the objects that we could associate with it. And that’s how calligrams were born.
Then we decided to give shape to our poetic ideas so once again we took our inspiration from what shapes mean to us and we created diamond poems. Their special geometry was not a problem for us, but a helping hand in structuring our thoughts and creativity.

The shapes in our lives

For the last step we wanted to use our imagination to “draw” meaning trying to explain idioms related to shapes. It was probably the funniest part to get the message through using only drawings and a couple of words.
All in all, we found out that shapes are not only boring mathematical concepts. Putting the “geometry” glasses on we were able to observe life from a different perspective, to understand and enjoy shapes, to think in terms of shapes, to let ourselves be inspired by them, to play and have great fun while playing with them.
