Lake Svyato in Dedovo ( Navashino district) is situated in the old and very beautiful pinewood. This lake is one of the most mysterious places in Nizhegorodskiy region.

The origin of this lake is connected with different legends. One of the ancient legends says that long time ago there was a Monastery (called Rusaki). Then it came under the water and this lake appeared on its place.

According to another legend, long, long time ago there was a very dangerous road that went through deep forests. And there were a lot of highwaymen who killed and robbed travelers. People were very afraid of them, especially merchants, and tried to avoid travelling this road and of course it was very bad for the trade and for the local people.
Once local people got sick and tired of it and decided to kill those criminals.
But it wasn’t an easy task, because the criminals were very dangerous and had a lot of weapons. So they made up their minds to give the criminals a special drink which would make them to sleep very deeply. And while they were asleep, local men killed them and put their bodies into the lake.

Another legend says, that there was a village on the place of the lake long time ago. And there was a big beautiful church in this village. Once, a local priest agreed to marry a young boy and a young girl, whose parents were against of their marriage.

But another trouble came….. The souls of those criminals frightened people with scary sounds and people were still afraid of visiting that area.
So, local residents asked the priest for help. When the priest attempted to put the holy cross into the water, the lake pulled it back. The second attempt was neither successful. And only for the third time the lake took the prayer and the cross.
Since that time the water in the lake is believed to be holy. It helps people to get rid of different diseases and the lake is called Svyato.
Those times lake Svyato was considered to be sacred and people could swim in it only on great church fetes.

And during the ceremony the ground opened up and all people, church and the village were under the ground. There was a big pit on the place of the village. Then the pit was filled with water and lake Svyato appeared.

These stories happened very long tome ago but lake Svyato is still considered to be mysterious.

Nowadays ...

As it is a very picturesque place it attracted more and more tourists every year and soon it became a tourist’s sight. And in 2006 a decision was made to build a retail park near the lake.
In September 2007, on one of greatest church fetes The Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, an amazing image of Mother of God and Ever Virgin appeared on the sand by the lake.

Nowadays ...

And the main point is that this image appeared on the very same day when the architect arrived to discuss the building of a retail park. This event was considered to be a special sign and it was decided to build a church instead of a park.
Moreover, in July a bright-red water lily appeared on the lake near the image of Mother of God and Ever Virgin, though no one could see such flowers on t lake Svyato before.
