An aircraft carrier is a ship that carries aircrafts. It transports the aircrafts to different places around the world where they will be launched and used. The aircraft carrier has a deck that acts as a runway for the aircrafts to launch and land. This is a disruption because it allows aircrafts to travel anywhere. It also allows them to be launched conveniently regardless of where in the world they are.

I drew a picture of an early game console displaying Pong, an early video game. One of the things computers have disrupted is entertainment. Video games have changed entertainment by allowing players to virtually enter another world. A video game can include basically any scenario, and allow you to interact with that scenario. It also allows you to be any character. Video games today can act as a form of communication between people in different places. Programming games like Pong is a good way to learn how to program. Over time, games have helped to create their own disruptions. For instance, games can disrupt storytelling. They can also disrupt incumbents such as tv or books. In fact, one incumbent they’ve almost replaced is board games.

Armadillos have plates made of keratin. Keratin is the protein that makes up your fingernails and hair. This allows them to curl up into a protein ball. Armadillos are a good source of protein. Armadillos curl up instead of running away.

Disruption: the act of interrupting the flow of something 

I think this field school will act as a disruption to our views on what we’ve been learning. Even though we’ve learned a lot in class, experiencing things in real life will probably allow us to see them in a new light. Our incumbent ideas and thoughts will be disrupted by the new knowledge we will gain. As an extension of this, our work will also be disrupted. 

I’m looking forward to seeing Google because it’s a really big, successful company that probably has lots of interesting things happening in it. Also I heard they have a slide.

Despite everything I learned on this field school, I don’t really think it’s affected my future much yet. This doesn’t mean that it won’t; I did learn a lot of important things, as I have throughout this whole unit. I’ll probably continue to consider these things throughout my future. However, this field school has not brought about any immediate changes or directly impacted my future

In essence, the computer history museum is important because computers are important. Anything that’s important to humanity as a whole should reasonably be documented. Computers have been important for decades now, and technology is continuing to change and develop rapidly. Things like the computer history museum help us keep an accurate record of what has happened, and what is happening. This record will help people in the future to learn about the computers of today and yesterday. It’s also interesting for us now to see how far the computer has come, and to see what computers used to be like. It can also give us a sense of just how far back computing technology goes. Having a resource like the computer history museum can help us understand the technology that it’s become so easy to take for granted. It might even make us appreciate it more. Seeing the stories of some recent technology showcased might help inspire people to do computer related jobs themselves. The museum also gives us some perspective on just how fast things have changed. Things are likely to keep changing quickly now that we have the technology to develop new technology. All in all, the computer technology museum helps us keep a record of what’s happening with computers that is helpful to us and will be helpful in the future.

I learned some things about life and school in America versus Canada. We talked about the curriculum that is used in most American high schools, as well as the way that curriculum is taught. I was interested to learn about the American high school experience, as it is both different from my life as a Canadian and relevant to my life as a high schooler.

The sound of the doors opening and closing would mean several things for the inmates. First of all, it was the sound they woke up to. It would be a sound they heard everyday. It would be the sound that meant they were getting let out of their cell. However, it would also be the sound that meant they were going back. It marked mealtime, time in the courtyard, and visiting time, which were probably the only things they stayed alive for.

High Tech High brings in students by lottery by zip code. The lower income areas get more spots allotted to them, so more students from those areas will be able to get in. This disrupts the typical economic and social system of schools. The typical system benefits people who already have money and allows them to continue making money. High Tech High seeks to try and give more people equal opportunities rather than benefiting any one group of people.

I would not be willing to work on an aircraft carrier. I get homesick very easily. I don’t like feeling stuck in a place away from home. I also don’t like being around weapons. I do like airplanes, though.

I feel I’ve grown as a learner on this trip because I got to learn more about different perspectives. Talking to real people helped me gain a better understanding of all the different things we learned about. Visiting different places and learning more about disruption has made me consider whether everything I see is a form of disruption. I chose to illustrate disruption in this diagram via a metaphor. The diagram shows a leaky ceiling dripping water into a bowl. The leak represents the issue that the incumbent/disruption are solving, and the bowl represents the incumbent. In the comic, a character comes along, sees the bowl, and decides that while the bowl works as a temporary solution, he has a better solution: he can fix the ceiling. He fixes the ceiling, which acts as the disruption and solves the problem completely. In the last panel, he removes the bowl, which is no longer serving any purpose.

Diagram the process of disruption as you see it from your learning. What conclusions can you make at how disruption works from all the examples you have seen on this field school?

Look back on all your work - including the definition of disruption that you began with. What has changed? What is still the same? What growth have you done as a learner about the concept? How does your diagram help illustrate your learning on this process? This should be the longest reflection in the book.

I learned that Stanford doesn’t have strict requirements for applicants. They don’t ask for a specific GPA or number of credits. Instead, they try and consider each applicant as a person. They look at people’s abilities and achievements on a case by case basis. They also look at what each person is passionate about. This is similar to the PLP application process. Stanford does this in order to try and get students who will flourish. Sometimes students who do well in high school don’t do well in post secondary education. Standford’s application process allows them to pick students who they think will do well. This means their students go on to do better things.

I learned some interesting details about the iPhone creation process. One thing specifically that I found interesting was that the whole team would celebrate small victories. For instance, the anecdote about getting the scrolling/bouncing feature to work and everyone sitting there playing with that feature for like ten minutes. That’s something that just seems like such a small part of an iPhone now. I often forget how much work goes into something that small. With something like an iPhone, of course, designing every small part probably takes a lot of work.  It made me interested to know what small disruptions led up to or were caused by the big disruptions we’re learning about now. For instance, people working at tech companies must have small innovations all the time to help them solve a bigger solution more efficiently. In any of the disruptions we’re studying, there could be any number of little disruptions. It depends on your definition of the term.
