"Laalii's One Day" book was originally written by Vidya Nahar in Hindi for her Hindi students at Balodyan in 2012, presenting numbers, colors, familiar objects and actions in our surroundings in a lyrical format. On a higher note, Laalii has a meditative bent, where she simply flies up in the sky as per her natural instinct, and then just observes happenings around her, without seeking to change anything. As per natural order, when the day turns into night, she happily goes to bed without any stress / worries for the next day!
Vidya translated the book in Marathi for her Marathi students, and then in English in 2013! Since a kite is feminine in Hindi, original character's name is Laalii, which has been retained in gender neutral languages like English, or in languages where a kite is feminine. Languages such as Marathi, Sanskrit, Italian, that assign the male gender to a kite, the character's name has been change to Laaluu.
Vidya is thankful to her family, friends, strangers from around the world, who came together in summer of 2020 to translate the book in more world languages, while practicing social distancing, and managing their busy schedules. Translating a rhyming book in a rhyming format in a different language, while maintaining the core message was not an easy task. However, all the collaborators did a great job with their beautiful rhyming translations, while taking some creative freedom, at the same time, retaining the core concepts of the book. And all this, despite not being professional writers in their respective languages!
Vidya learned a lot about the beauty of different languages from around the world, their similarities, and differences through this project. It is her hope that you'll explore this book in various world languages with your family and friends, and celebrate the diversity of languages / cultures from around the world. Its like a poem which I liked best about it. It is fascinating how translators can retain the meaning as well rhythm of the poetry ! I think one has to be very good at a language to be able to do that. So very proud of you.

Translator 78 years old Prof. Singavi, a lecturer and practicing Chartered Accountant during his active professional career, is a writer, trekker and sports-person. He is a passionate driver and loves to travel, read and write. He has also been founder of several social service organizations, such as, Mulund Gymkhana, Hariyali, etc. He stays at Thane, India and speaks Marathi, English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marwadi and Ahirani languages equally well.
Translator and narrator Dr. Li Ye received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Curriculum & Instruction. She is a Mandarin Chinese teacher, teaching in a high school in the north suburb of Chicago. Her hobbies are cooking and gardening.
