Starting Primary 1August 2023
What do pupils need to have with them?
They need to have:
School bag - large enough to fit an A4 folder in.
Waterproof jacket that is warm for the colder months
Water bottle with their name on it, this will come home daily for cleaning and refilling. We encourage water rather than juice. Fizzy and energy drinks are not permitted in school.
Healthy snack - we are a nut free school due to allergies so please make sure that the snack is nut free.
Named clothing - it really helps if jackets, hats, scarves, jumpers can be named so that if they get left in the peg areas we can return it to the correct child. Please make sure that they wear clothing that you do not mind if it gets dirty.
Children should leave special or expensive toys at home as we cannot accept responsibility for them here at school.
If you have spare welly boots and a waterproof suit for your child this would be helpful. Please make sure that your child's name is on them and they are in a named bag.

Where do we go on the first day?
We are using the main Infant entrance this year - we will no longer be using fire doors straight into the classrooms.
There will be indirect supervision in the middle wing playground from 8:50am every day. The children will then be escorted around to the infant entrance.
The bus arrives at school at approximately 8:50am. The children are met off the bus by a member of staff and they will be taken to the middle wing playground for indirect supervision. If you live in Gulberwick, the Transport department will send a bus pass to your address for your child during the holidays. If you live at the Observatory then if there are spare seats on the bus these will be allocated during the first few weeks of term. This is all organised by the Transport Department and school is not involved.
If the weather is very wet or windy, children will have access to the main school building. P1's should continue to enter via the Infant entrance and will be supervised in the open area.

What does a day in Primary 1 look like?
School Day
Day begins 9:00am
Snack time 10:50am to 11:05am
Lunch time 12:20pm to 1:15pm
Home time 3:00pm
Parents should drop off children in the middle wing playground or the main Infant entrance.
Pupils arriving late and visitors gain access through the main school entrance and report to the main office on arrival.
Should your child need to leave school during the school day they must be signed out when collected from the school office and signed back in when they return.
Play based approach
Primary 1 looks different from when you may have been at school. Learning is facilitated through play with lots of opportunities for children to lead their own learning and be creative. This is continuing on from their child led experiences in Nursery.
As children are ready to start more structured learning, small groups will start to develop further phonics, writing and numeracy skills. This builds up as the year progresses, when individual children show that they are ready to develop these skills.
The children do have a desk and chair that they sit at with their friends but will spend only short amounts of time there during the day. They will be active learners and explore all areas of the classroom and open area. They may sit in various seats throughout the day, there is no specific seat for each child.
They will have access to similar high quality continuous play provision that they had in Nursery; sand or water, painting and block play all being part of this.

Outdoor Learning
Primary 1 embrace outdoors and will have an outdoor learning session each week. This year it has been called Welly Wednesday.
Children will use the school environment and then as confidence grows they will use the wider local community to explore and learn new skills.
Please make sure that your child has appropriate footwear on and a waterproof jacket. We have waterproofs that can be borrowed and also some spare wellies. Anything brought in from home then please label so that we can make sure it is returned to you at the end of the year.

School lunch or packed lunch?
School lunches are cooked daily on site by our fantastic canteen ladies. There is a three weekly rotating menu that will be shared on the school blog.
Here is an example menu from this session.

School lunches are free for all Primary 1 children.
Milk is available at a cost of £1 per week. This is payable through ParentPay, an online school payment system. When your child starts school, if you want them to have milk then an activation letter will be sent home.
Lunches are opted into for the whole term. Please let the school office know what your child intends to do.

Children go up to the canteen and will be given the option that you have chosen. You will be asked to chose what you would like your child to have each day to help speed up the process, this is done for the whole year. The menu is rolling three week menu. There are supervisors there to help with cutting food if required but we do encourage the children to be as independent as possible.
Children who are having a home packed lunch eat in the canteen. There are supervisors there to help with opening tubs or yoghurts if needed. Please be aware that the packed lunch will be stored in your child's bag or in the classroom and is not able to be refrigerated.
