Great thanks to Doctor Michael, Director of English at Hauppauge High School and 2022 administrator of the year, a long-time advocate and supporter of Scratchboard. A true educator, Doctor Michael always has students' best interests at heart and fosters a love of literature among all of his students. Although we are sad to see him go, Scratchboard contributors are happy that Doctor Michael is able to explore the next phase of his life in retirement and wish him only the best.

Josef Koudelka holds up his watch in “Invasion of Prague” so everyone will know exactly what time the world ended.
When the world ends again tomorrow,
How will I let my everyone know?
Should I call them?

Real

We read about God so much that we made him real,
And I’m afraid that if I read enough my heroes will become real too,
and ask me what I’m doing.
I’m afraid that if people stop reading about me I’ll cease to exist.
But I do know I never want to stop reading about you.

Lies

I can’t lie.
People like me just aren’t built for it.
People like me are meant to lie on grass hills outside of large towns
and answer questions people ask of us.
We’re meant to point and give directions, to laugh at a funny story and tell jokes about the city below, to bow our heads and relay sad facts about our neighbors.
We answer questions and we answer them honestly.
We are not meant to lie.
People like me are not built to lie.
I can’t lie.
