Special Thanks To....
Great thanks to Doctor Michael, Director of English at Hauppauge High School and 2022 administrator of the year, a long-time advocate and supporter of Scratchboard. A true educator, Doctor Michael always has students' best interests at heart and fosters a love of literature among all of his students. Although we are sad to see him go, Scratchboard contributors are happy that Doctor Michael is able to explore the next phase of his life in retirement and wish him only the best.

Invasion of Prague: World's End
Stevie D. Rosenfeld
Josef Koudelka holds up his watch in “Invasion of Prague” so everyone will know exactly what time the world ended.
When the world ends again tomorrow,
How will I let my everyone know?
Should I call them?
Or is that more of a…
texting thing?

RealStevie D. Rosenfeld
We read about God so much that we made him real,
And I’m afraid that if I read enough my heroes will become real too,
and ask me what I’m doing.
I’m afraid that if people stop reading about me I’ll cease to exist.
But I do know I never want to stop reading about you.

6Lies
Stevie D. Rosenfeld
I can’t lie.
People like me just aren’t built for it.
People like me are meant to lie on grass hills outside of large towns
and answer questions people ask of us.
We’re meant to point and give directions, to laugh at a funny story and tell jokes about the city below, to bow our heads and relay sad facts about our neighbors.
We answer questions and we answer them honestly.
We are not meant to lie.
People like me are not built to lie.
I can’t lie.

Maternal by Corrado Mazzuca, March 2022, Acrylic Paint, 50.8 cm x 40.64 cm, This piece represents maternal love from two generations: mother and grandmother. The artist wanted to create a piece about love from family members because it is an extremely important form of love. Through media, the collar pink (depending on shade) is used to express femininity; love, warmth, tranquility, and power. They chose to use monochromatic shades of pink to incorporate these emotions and provide balance to the piece.

Parting
Anonymous
Our vision is in our voices.
I looked in my heart while the wild swans went over,
Then all the nations of birds lifted together.
Why don't we say goodbye right now?
I felt a funeral in my brain,
It’s so beautiful, life. Damn, Death.
How will I think of you?
We could perfect our parting,
In a poem, one line may hinder another
It all depends.

It Factor
Daniela Francisci
“I’m not like you.
I had a blissful and innocent childhood because I never had some greater purpose.
I wasn’t born with ‘it.’
My sister could have devoured me in the womb, but the world wouldn’t have changed.
I wasn’t put on this Earth for any profound reason, other than to fill the ‘newly born’ quota.
But you, you were born with ‘it.’
You were born and the world knew that you were going to be great.
And I fear that someday I may come to resent you for it, and on that day I’ll truly realize that I was only ever destined for mediocrity.”
