Primary programming &amp; algorithms - face to face CP003

Duration 1 Day (5 hours) Summary Programming and algorithms are fundamental to the primary computing curriculum. Algorithms are clear and unambiguous instructions to solve problems which can often be translated using a programming language for a computer to follow. By thinking computationally, children can harness the power of computers to extend their capabilities. Teachers may wish to attend Teaching and leading&nbsp;<a href="https://teachcomputing.org/courses/CP001/teaching-and-leading-key-stage-1-computing-face-to-face">key stage 1</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://teachcomputing.org/courses/CP002/teaching-and-leading-key-stage-2-computing-face-to-face">key stage 2</a>&nbsp;computing before participating in this CPD. During this one-day professional development, you will discover engaging and effective ways to help children use computational thinking. Physical Computing Kit Loan Scheme

NCCE offer free class sets of physical computing equipment for use by schools in England, which will are stored and loaned out by Computing Hubs. Our three hubs have limited supplies of Crumble / Micro:bit and Raspberry Pi Pico trays.

Outstanding primary computing for all - face to face CP005

Duration 1 Day (5 hours) Summary Some children seem to naturally flourish in computing, while others need more support to reach their potential. This CPD aims to give every child an outstanding computing education in primary school, opening up future study and employment routes and closing attainment gaps while building a coalition of learner support of teachers, peers and families.&nbsp; You'll consider how cultural and other influences affect outcomes in computing, including the impact on girls and other groups of children. Using a range of sources of evidence you'll examine the relationship between computing and the rest of the curriculum, leading to better integration of this relatively new subject. You'll plan how to raise the knowledge and digital skills of your colleagues, ensuring positive attitudes towards computing in all areas of the curriculum.&nbsp; You'll have time and support to consider how your school's computing curriculum would stand up to scrutiny, and how you can provide equitable and inspirational learning for every child in authentic, collaborative and engaging contexts. Preparing for Ofsted in primary computing - short course CP486

Duration: 90 minutes Summary Find out what to expect from an Ofsted visit to your school and how you can prepare for it as a computing subject lead. This short course will explore the expectations outlined in the Ofsted framework and what this means for computing teaching and learning in your school. Drawing on the evidence of recent inspections it will also help you to identify key concerns around a subject inspection and how you can best prepare for it. You will be supported in identifying where you are now in computing and exploring key strategies to ensure that the intent, implementation and impact of your computing curriculum is evident throughout school. Computing Community

We offer fully-funded consultancy and guidance to primary schools located in local authority districts 5 or 6 through a network of computing education specialists, called Subject Matter Experts. Your local expert can help you to complete a three year action plan to improve your computing offer, and identify the most appropriate CPD to upskill your staff.

Physical computing kit - Introduction to the micro:bit in key stage 2 A short 90 minute face to face course (CP292)

Duration: 90 Minutes Explore physical computing using the micro: bit device; finding out how it can be used to develop understanding of programming through creative digital projects. During this CPD, you’ll learn how to get started with the micro:bit, exploring the in-built buttons, LEDs, and sensors for detecting movement, sound, light and heat. You’ll find out how to setup the device, how to attach add-ons to make use of the inputs and outputs, and how to teach using micro:bit, making use of freely available resources. The micro:bit provides an engaging way to develop subject knowledge, through cross-curricular projects that provide instant feedback to develop understanding of programming in Key Stage 2. All hubs hold Crumble Kits, Raspberry Pi Picos and Micro:bits for loan-out to primary schools within our designated Hub areas

Physical Computing Kit - Loan Process

- Hubs loan kits out one per school for half a term at a time. - Teachers are required to attend a short face to face training session before loaning, usually on the same day as loan pick up, at the school providing the kit (training dates overleaf) - Schools will need to complete and return a loan agreement form to the Hub and complete a feedback form on their experience of using the kits before returning them to the Hub. - Interested teacher fills in loan request/return form - found <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/12t1jp6h_KSZbnfboe-bjdxq5hRpmv2pu72eadXg8Axo/edit">here</a> - Hub contacts the teacher to arrange a collection date - Teacher completes request/return form with details of any missing items - Teacher completes feedback form and returns kit to the hub - found <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdj83fcLN1jrJmCATTYM_tq-gikB6W0QySmsug7kg6evxNBeQ/viewform">here </a> - Hub checks the kit and prepares it for the next loan

Physical computing kit - Exploring the Crumble for Year 6 (pilot) A short 90 minute face to face course (CM303F34)

Duration: 90 Minutes Physical computing involves programming digital devices to sense and interact with the world – an engaging alternative to screen-only activity. It touches upon many areas of the computing curriculum, bringing subject knowledge and programming skills to engaging and enjoyable classroom activities. The Crumble Controller is an easy-to-use programmable device, ideal for physical computing in primary schools. It is capable of driving two motors. With 4 input / output terminals, children can connect LEDs, switches and other interesting add-ons. During this CPD, you'll explore how the Crumble can be used to meet the objectives of the Year 6 curriculum, currently met by the micro:bit unit. You'll begin by reviewing prior knowledge of the Crumble and using selection to control outputs that you covered in the Physical Computing Kit – KS2 Crumble (course CP252). Then you'll explore how to connect sensors and use variables alongside selection to trigger outputs based on the sensed values. Finally, having revised programming and connecting sensors on the Crumble, you'll explore how the device can be used with year 6 children. The CPD will help you gain confidence in teaching and using the Crumble with year 6, including exploring creative ideas for application in the classroom. Assessment of Primary Computing - Remote or Face to Face CP007

Duration 1 Day (5 hours) Summary Effective teaching includes the&nbsp;skilful&nbsp;use of assessment, to check children’s knowledge and understanding, and to overcome misconceptions. Online safety through primary computing - short course - remote CP469

Duration 90 minutes Summary This short course will support the needs of schools in ensuring that they keep children safe whilst teaching computing and using technology to access the full primary curriculum. Online safety is a whole-school priority, and can be supported effectively through a high-quality computing curriculum. Using high-quality, evidence-based resources and best practice this CPD supports computing subject leaders to develop safe and respectful use of online technologies among all children. You'll discover where to find the most up-to-date, authoritative, and accessible sources of learning support for this vital aspect of the primary curriculum. Working with colleagues with responsibility for safeguarding and school leadership, you'll be confident that curriculum provision meets requirements and supports the needs of children in your school.
