Who are we?

We are a group of Computing Hubs across England, led by schools and colleges with excellence in teaching computing. Our hubs are comprised of:

Hubs support schools and colleges to provide a high-quality computing education to all young people.

We will work with you to identify your computing needs and provide a targeted programme of support to help embed this key subject in your school. Support includes high-quality CPD with generous subsidies; teaching and learning resources; and school-to-school support.

Vision and Background

Our vision is for every child in every school in England to receive a world-leading computing education. And it's in secondary education that we build strongly on the foundations set in the primary years, and prepare students for further study, rewarding careers and citizenship.

The National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) is funded by the Department for Education and marks a significant investment in improving the provision of computing education in England.
Run by a consortium made up of STEM Learning, the Raspberry Pi Foundation and BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, our vision is to achieve a world-leading computing education for every child in England.

Subject Knowledge Certificate

Certificate awarded by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT

Computer Science Accelerator is a professional development programme for teachers, funded by the Department for Education, leading to a national certificate in computer science subject knowledge.

The programme will help you develop or refresh your subject knowledge up to GCSE, with subsidies available for state-funded schools and colleges to support your learning.

Who is eligible?
current and aspiring computing teachers
suitable for all abilities, from little or no experience in teaching computer science to experienced teachers looking to deepen their subject knowledge

How much does it cost?
There are no fees to pay for teachers in England who work in state-funded schools and colleges and trainee teachers, supply teachers or teachers returning to the state sector. You may also be eligible to apply for a subsidy.

Welcome to the Secondary Computing Programme

This professional development programme is designed to enhance how you teach secondary computing, and to give you confidence to apply those skills in the classroom. Throughout your learning journey, you'll get the opportunity to develop yourself, your professional community, and your students, by engaging in a range of activities.

The programme is suitable for teachers who have completed the Computer Science Accelerator programme, and have the required subject knowledge to advance their secondary computing teaching.

Python programming: advanced subject knowledge, implementation and testing - face to face

This course is for secondary teachers of GCSE Computer Science with solid subject knowledge. This course is fully funded for participants from maintained schools in England who have successfully completed the GCSE Computer Science Accelerator programme, which supports the development of teacher subject knowledge.

During the course you will explore those pedagogy approaches which are proven to be the most successful, applying them to the specific context and challenges of GCSE computer science. Guided by an experienced teaching practitioner, and alongside other teachers undertaking similar challenges, you’ll become better able to plan and deliver impactful lessons that effectively balance classroom and at-screen activities.The course is based on firm evidence and experience, and will guide you to develop an understanding of what works best in the context of your own school.

This course is for current or prospective teachers of GCSE computer science, to undertake this course it is advised that you have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of the Python language.

Develop your Python programming skills by exploring advanced programming techniques then implementing and testing these in a working solution.

You’ll need to be confident in the essentials of sequence, selection, iteration and working with data files to access this course. It’s recommended that you undertake the following courses prior to this one: Python programming constructs: sequencing, selection and iteration and Python programming: working with data
If you are entirely new to computer science, we recommend first participating in our one-day course: An introduction to algorithms, programming and data in GCSE computer science.
