Your child has been nominated by their teacher to participate in our Maths Circles programme, starting from January 2022.

This online overview will provide you with further details about the programme, but if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with the Outreach Team by emailing: events@exeterms.ac.uk

It is our intention that students join us in Year 7 and remain on the programme until Year 11.

WHAT IS MESME
MESME stands for: Mathematics Education for Social Mobility and Excellence.

WHAT IS A MATHS CIRCLE?
Maths Circles are designed to support able Maths students to develop their mathematical thinking, reasoning skills and problem-solving.

Expect a selection of problems/tasks and co-operative activities from across the KS3 curriculum and beyond!

FORMAT
Working in a group of 6, you'll be assigned a mentor who will work with you online for an hour a week, over 20 weeks (dates can be found overleaf).

Within this 20 week period, we are aiming to host 2 face-to-face days (also noted overleaf). On these days you will meet and get to know others who are taking part, along with some of the mentors. You'll be helped to get set up on Microsoft Teams, ready for the online sessions. Most importantly, you'll work on some exciting maths together!

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Please note that financial support is available to aid pupil premium students with IT equipment if needed, as well as travel bursaries for the face-to-face days.

If your child does not qualify for pupil premium, but you would still struggle to cover the cost of travel, please let us know via the application form. We do not want the cost of transport to be a barrier for students participating.

ABOUT
Please note that it is the parents responsibility to get students to and from the face-to-face sessions. However, once students have been registered, your presence will not be necessary to encourage group discussions and participation. Take advantage of some shopping in Exeter, visit the Library or Exeter RAMM or enjoy one of the many brilliant coffee shops!

Venue
Exeter Maths School, Castle Street, Exeter EX4 3PU

Unfortunately, there is no parking at the site or on the street outside, there are a number of alternative parking arrangements available in Exeter; This Link lists all available parking and associated costs within close proximity to the hotel. We would encourage everyone to make use of the excellent public transport links nearby. Exeter Central and Exeter St Davids train stations are both within a short walk and there are also many bus stops on the High Street nearby, including the Park & Ride service.
What to bring with you

- Pencil case and a notepad (not essential)

- Packed lunch - students will not be able to leave the school whilst with us and there is no catering on site (we are a NO NUTS school)

- Please wear something you feel comfortable in - whether this be your own clothes, or your school uniform. We do not mind either way!

COVID-19 Precautions

Students are no longer required to provide a negative lateral flow test on arrival and masks are by preference only and are not mandatory.
