In the summer, my family packs up the dogs and supplies to go to fish camp. We go in the river boat. Everyone wears life jackets.

Then the men drift with their nets to catch fish. We catch king salmon, silver salmon, dog salmon and white fish in our nets. The men bring the fish back to camp for the women to clean.

The women use a uluaq to cut off the fish heads and gut the fish. They take the eggs out too. They rinse the fish two times and then put them in a bucket of salt. They hang the fish to dry. When the fish are dry enough, they hang the fish to smoke in the smoke house.

We usually have to keep a rifle by the smoke house because bears like to eat our fish. Even squirrels, mice, and sea gulls try to steal our fish. The smoke helps to keep the ciivaks away. The dogs are tied near the fish rack to keep the bears away.
