INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

The National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) is funded by the Department for Education and marks a significant investment in improving the provision of computing education in England.

The Alban TSH and Sandringham School became one of the first schools in England to be awarded official Computer Hub status by the NCCE, endeavouring to provide support for primary and secondary computing teachers in schools in the area.

The Sandringham Computing Hub is the local face of the National Centre, providing tailored support to all teachers (primary, secondary and colleges), to equip them to make the new computing curriculum into an inspirational reality in every classroom in the land.

We hope to play a significant role in supporting the national imperative of strengthening the quality of computer science teaching across all key stages. Computer science is a key STEM subject and through high-quality teaching, we will be developing the programmers and innovators of the future. This will support our intellectual capital and ensure the United Kingdom continues to be a leading economy on the World Stage.

CPD SUPPORT: COURSES

Computing courses for teachers
There are a range of free or low cost professional development courses, catering for all levels of subject knowledge, designed to help you teach computing, better. Courses can be completed online, remote or face-to-face. Click the links to find a course to suit you.

As a hub, we run courses that are facilitated by trained colleagues who have worked or are working in schools within our region. For further information visit our website.

Most courses also attract a subsidy payment of £220 to cover a teachers time out of school.

Isaac Computer Science
At GCSE and A level, there is a a free online platform for students and teachers to use:
·      in the classroom
·      for homework
·      for revision
There are also free teacher CPD events and student workshops that can be attended. To stay up-to-date visit the website.

CPD SUPPORT: CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGY

Teach Computing Curriculum
A complete curriculum containing everything needed to teach computing at key stages 1 to 4, including lesson plans, slides, worksheets, homework and assessment.
All of the content is completely free to access, and has been created by subject experts, based on the latest pedagogical research and teacher feedback. Choose your resources by key stage.

COMPUTING QUALITY FRAMEWORK

The National Centre for Computing Education Computing Quality Framework is intended to help schools review their progress in developing the computing curriculum. The framework takes you through each aspect of computing, helping you to access the NCCE’s wide range of resources, report, and progress. The development of the framework was funded by the DfE .

CPD SUPPORT: CERTIFICATION

Teach primary computing
A nationally recognised qualification designed to help teachers demonstrate their commitment to developing their own computing practice for key stages 1 and 2. Attendance on our courses and CAS communities are all part of the process. More details here.

PRIMARY CERTIFICATE ENROL HERE

Teach secondary computing
The Computer Science Accelerator Programme is a nationally recognised and certified professional development programme designed to equip colleagues in state-funded secondary, primary and middle schools, and state-funded FE colleges, with the subject knowledge and confidence to successfully teach GCSE computer science. You're eligible if you are:

·      a trainee teacher (computing or otherwise, seeking additional specialism)
·      supply teachers that regularly teach computer science
·      returning teachers that will teach computer science
·      serving teachers at state-funded schools (computing or otherwise)

A bursary payment of up to £1100 is payable on successful completion of the programme. Once successful you can then work towards the secondary certificate to further develop your knowledge.
