African Diaspora Trail Bermuda

Tucker House was built in 1752. Henry Tuckers family lived in the house from 1775-1807. After the civil war, the raineys took their savings from bermuda to charleston. Joseph Rainey lived in the house for 4 years with his wife and five children. Mr. Rainey would then go on to be the first black man in the House of Representatives in America.

Great Restaurants Near the Sites!

St. Peter's Church is right in the heart of Saint Georges so there are plenty of great restaurants and pubs around. Here's a snip of the street view, to show you the ferry terminal and cruise ship dock along with some restaurants and hotels.

Barr's Bay Park is found directly in the middle of Hamilton city and right beside on of my favourite restaurants... Bouchee! Go on down and grab a Croc Madame at Bouchee and then dart down to the "We Arrive" statue.

If you're heading down to the Joseph Rainey Museum, don't forget to stop at Wahoo's Bistro or the Tempest for some refreshments and lunch!

James Darrell was a black slave that lived most of his life serving a master. Pilots Darrell Square was built and bought in 1795. James Darrell was granted freedom because he piloted a massive ship (HMS Resolution) past the Bermudian reef. He was also the first black slave to ever buy a house! He was also granted the privilege of being a kings pilot! Sadly, you are not allowed to go inside the house because James Darrell's Great Great Great Great Great grandchildren still live in the house.

First,&nbsp;bus&nbsp;from Hamilton&nbsp;is&nbsp;at 6:45am on weekdays, at 7:15am on Saturday and 9:45am on Sunday.The last&nbsp;bus&nbsp;from Hamilton&nbsp;is&nbsp;at 10:45pm on all days.

The bus routes cover the main roads throughout the island and leave the City of Hamilton every 20-30 minutes. With a number of different routes and zones you can hop on and off at any destination to explore the island.

Sally was an enslaved woman owned by the estate of frances Dickenson of southampton. On June 1st 1730 she was tied up on the suspicion of poisoning several people including the mariner Thomas Forester who owned Sally's granddaughters his wife Sarah Foster and Nancey a household bondswoman. Sally was charged with supplying beck with the poison that Nancey discovered in the wall of the kitchen outlet. Although Sally maintained her innocence, stating that she Never Deserved the sentence given, she was burnt at the stake for the offence.

At Barr's Bay Park you will find the 'We Arrive' statue. They built the statue because less than one year after Bermuda slaves won emancipation (in 1835), the american Briganin Enterprise having set sail from virginia was blown off course by a savage winter storm and forced to seek refuge in Barrs Bay harbour Bermuda. Slavery had not been abolished in America yet but it was is Bermuda. This meant all the slaves were freed and sent on their way. Everyone on board except a mother and her 5 children were freed. The mother and her family would have been freed but they wanted to see their father and remained slaves.

The African diaspora is a series of historic sites were famous black slaves and people have either found refuge, were executed or had a statue built of them. The way you can tell these sites from regular monuments is because of the plaque next to it. or an emblem on the map (shown on cover).

Some of the sites can be houses that slaves have built or bought like Pilots Darell house or Tuckers house and Mitchel house. They could also be a statue like the 'We Arrive" statue and the Sarah (Sally) Bassett statue. They can also be places were historical events have happened like at Mitchell House or St' Peters Church were a black man was executed for preaching to people of color and white people.

Segregated Seating

Visiting hours: anyone can visit this place from 11am to 3pm

The reason this historic Church is placed in this list is because the massive cemetery wrapping around the entire building consisting of only people of color. During the segregation, people of color were not allowed to be buried in a regular cemetery and had to have their own, seperate from where caucasians were buried. 

Along with being buried in a different cemetery people of color also had to sit in different seating within the church. They had to enter through a different door and would have to go up steps to get to the seating. Nowadays there is a organ there but when they had to sit there was no organ so they had a tiny bit of room but not a lot.

Jeffrey's Cave is a small little cove hidden at Spittle Pond. A slave named Jeffrey had escaped his master and fled to the cave and survived for over a month and was only found when a young 15 year old slave was spotted showing odd behaviour just after sunset. The young girl would come and give Jeffrey a small packet of food for the night. It was originally thought that Jeffrey had boarded a ship the night before and left the island as a stowaway, but once he was found at the cave, he was executed immediately.
