Piazza Ciullo

Ciullo Square

Piazza Ciullo è la piazza principale nel centro della città. È dedicata al poeta Cielo (o Ciullo) D’Alcamo, autore della poesia “Rosa fresca aulentissima”. In passato c’era un corso d’acqua. Ci sono tre chiese: Sant’Oliva, la Sacra Famiglia, la Chiesa del Gesù e la Chiesa dello Stellario che oggi purtroppo non esiste più. C’è anche il Palazzo del Comune ed un chiosco in stile Liberty

Ciullo Square is the main square in the centre of the town. It is dedicated to the poet Cielo (or Ciullo) D’Alcamo, author of the poem “Rosa fresca aulentissima”. In the past there was a watercourse. There are three churches: Saint Oliva, the Holy Family, the Church of Jesus and the Church of Stellario that unfortunately today doesn’t exist any more.
There is also the Town Hall and a kiosk in Liberty style

L’arcata ha tre archi.
É l’ingresso del museo di arte contemporanea e della biblioteca civica “Sebastiano Bagolino”, che contiene rari incunaboli e altri libri antichissimi.

The arcade hasgot three arches. It is the entrance of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Alcamo and of the Civic Library "Sebastiano Bagolino",that contains rare incunabulums and other very old books.

The Church of Jesus

La facciata della chiesa domina la piazza Ciullo.
È in stile barocco, ci sono pilastri quadrati di ordine dorico-toscanico e ionico. Ci sono cinque nicchie che contengono le statue di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola, San Francesco Xavier, la Madonna dei miracoli (la patrona di Alcamo) e gli arcangeli Michele e Raffaele

The façade of the church dominates Ciullo Square. It is in Baroque style, there are square pilasters with Doric-Tuscan and Ionic orders. There are five niches that contain the statues of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Saint Francis Xavier, Our Lady of Miracles (the Patron Saint of Alcamo) and the archangels Michael and Raphael

Saint Olive’s Church

É una chiesa a navata unica, ubicata nella piazza principale della città ad angolo con il centralissimo Corso VI Aprile, nel cuore di Alcamo. La chiesa custodisce la statua di Sant’Oliva di Antonello Gagini, che presenta una mano scolpita in maniera estremamente realistica. La pala d’altare rappresenta Tutti i Santi.

The Basilica of Our Lady's Assumption

La Basilica di “Santa Maria Assunta”(chiamata anche chiesa madre o matrice) è una chiesa il cui primo impianto risale al XIV secolo. La facciata neoclassica fu realizzata nel 1786. È a tre navate. Ci sono colonne in marmo estratto dal Monte Bonifato. Contiene 38 affreschi del famoso pittore fiammingo Gugliemo Borremans, in particolare “L’assunzione di Maria con la Santissima Trinità e i Santi Anna e Gioacchino”. Nella seconda cappella laterale a destra vi è il famoso crocifisso in tela e colla scolpito da Antonello Gagini. C’è anche il museo d’arte sacra con tanti dipinti, sculture, gioielli in oro e argento.
Nel giardino accanto alla chiesa c’è il monumento ai caduti della Prima guerra mondiale. Sulla cima del campanile c’è una statua della Madonna.

The Basilica of Our Lady's Assumption (also called mother church) is a 14th century church.
The neo-classical façade was realized in 1786.
There are three naves.
There are columns in marble extracted from the mount Bonifato.
There are 38 frescos by the famous Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans, in particular Our Lady's Assumption with the Holy Trinity and the Saints Anne and Joachim. In the second chapel on the right side there is the famous canvas and glue crucifix made by Antonello Gagini.
There is also the Museum of Religious Art with a lot of paintings, sculptures, gold and silver jewelry.
In the garden next to the church there is a War Memorial of the First World War.
On the top of the tower bell there is a statue of the Virgin Mary.
