Ciullo Square

Piazza Ciullo è la piazza principale nel centro della città. È dedicata al poeta Cielo (o Ciullo) D’Alcamo, autore della poesia “Rosa fresca aulentissima”. In passato c’era un corso d’acqua. Ci sono tre chiese: Sant’Oliva, la Sacra Famiglia, la Chiesa del Gesù e la Chiesa dello Stellario che oggi purtroppo non esiste più. C’è anche il Palazzo del Comune ed un chiosco in stile Liberty

Ciullo Square is the main square in the centre of the town. It is dedicated to the poet Cielo (or Ciullo) D’Alcamo, author of the poem “Rosa fresca aulentissima”. In the past there was a watercourse. There are three churches: Saint Oliva, the Holy Family, the Church of Jesus and the Church of Stellario that unfortunately today doesn’t exist any more.
There is also the Town Hall and a kiosk in Liberty style

L’arcata ha tre archi.
É l’ingresso del museo di arte contemporanea e della biblioteca civica “Sebastiano Bagolino”, che contiene rari incunaboli e altri libri antichissimi.

The arcade hasgot three arches. It is the entrance of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Alcamo and of the Civic Library "Sebastiano Bagolino",that contains rare incunabulums and other very old books.

The Church of Jesus

La facciata della chiesa domina la piazza Ciullo.
È in stile barocco, ci sono pilastri quadrati di ordine dorico-toscanico e ionico. Ci sono cinque nicchie che contengono le statue di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola, San Francesco Xavier, la Madonna dei miracoli (la patrona di Alcamo) e gli arcangeli Michele e Raffaele

The façade of the church dominates Ciullo Square. It is in Baroque style, there are square pilasters with Doric-Tuscan and Ionic orders. There are five niches that contain the statues of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Saint Francis Xavier, Our Lady of Miracles (the Patron Saint of Alcamo) and the archangels Michael and Raphael

Saint Olive’s Church

É una chiesa a navata unica, ubicata nella piazza principale della città ad angolo con il centralissimo Corso VI Aprile, nel cuore di Alcamo. La chiesa custodisce la statua di Sant’Oliva di Antonello Gagini, che presenta una mano scolpita in maniera estremamente realistica. La pala d’altare rappresenta Tutti i Santi.

The Basilica of Our Lady's Assumption

La Basilica di “Santa Maria Assunta”(chiamata anche chiesa madre o matrice) è una chiesa il cui primo impianto risale al XIV secolo. La facciata neoclassica fu realizzata nel 1786. È a tre navate. Ci sono colonne in marmo estratto dal Monte Bonifato. Contiene 38 affreschi del famoso pittore fiammingo Gugliemo Borremans, in particolare “L’assunzione di Maria con la Santissima Trinità e i Santi Anna e Gioacchino”. Nella seconda cappella laterale a destra vi è il famoso crocifisso in tela e colla scolpito da Antonello Gagini. C’è anche il museo d’arte sacra con tanti dipinti, sculture, gioielli in oro e argento.
Nel giardino accanto alla chiesa c’è il monumento ai caduti della Prima guerra mondiale. Sulla cima del campanile c’è una statua della Madonna.

The Basilica of Our Lady's Assumption (also called mother church) is a 14th century church.
The neo-classical façade was realized in 1786.
There are three naves.
There are columns in marble extracted from the mount Bonifato.
There are 38 frescos by the famous Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans, in particular Our Lady's Assumption with the Holy Trinity and the Saints Anne and Joachim. In the second chapel on the right side there is the famous canvas and glue crucifix made by Antonello Gagini.
There is also the Museum of Religious Art with a lot of paintings, sculptures, gold and silver jewelry.
In the garden next to the church there is a War Memorial of the First World War.
On the top of the tower bell there is a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The Arab Fountain

La Fontana araba fu costruita durante il periodo della dominazione araba. Si trova nella parte più bassa della città, vicino al sentiero che conduce al santuario della Madonna dei miracoli. Ci sono due lavabi con due beccucci e lesene sormontate da capitelli. C’è anche un abbeveratoio per pecore e mucche. Oggi la fontana è ancora funzionante.

The Arab fountain was built during the period of the Arab domination. It is in the lower part of the town, near the path leading to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles. There are two sinks with two spouts and pilaster strips surmounted by capitals. There is also a drinking trough for sheep and cows. Today the fountain is still functioning.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles - the Patron Saint of Alcamo

Il santuario fu costruito nel 1547 dopo il ritrovamento del quadro della Madonna dei miracoli. Nel mese di maggio i pellegrini si recano al santuario attraverso un sentiero in discesa a piedi mentre recitano il rosario. La chiesa ha due facciate con due diversi portali. L’interno del santuario ha una navata singola con otto altari. Sulla volta c’è un affresco che rappresenta la glorificazione della Madonna dei Miracoli, nell’abside c’è un secondo affresco con l’apparizione della Madonna ad alcune donne e un terzo con il ritrovamento del quadro. Il quadro si trova adesso all’interno di una cappella.

The sanctuary was built in 1547 after the discovery of the picture of Our Lady of Miracles. In May pilgrims go to the sanctuary through a downhill footpath while they say the rosary. The church has got two façades with two different portals. The interior of the sanctuary has a single nave with eight altars. On the vault there is a fresco representing the glorification of Our Lady of Miracles, in the apse there is a second fresco with the apparition of the Virgin Mary to some women and a third one with the founding of the picture. The painting is now inside a chapel.

The Castle of the Counts of Modica

Il castello dei Conti di Modica è un castello medievale nel centro della città. La famiglia Peralta iniziò la costruzione del castello nel XIV secolo e i feudatari Chiaramonte lo completarono. Nel 1535 l’imperatore Carlo V, di ritorno da Tunisi, alloggiò in una delle sue torri. Il castello ha una forma romboidale, con un cortile rettangolare. Ci sono due torri quadrate e due circolari. Nelle torri torturavano prigionieri, c’erano alloggi per le sentinelle e per gli ospiti. Ci sono finestre bifore e trifore dello stile Gotico-Catalano.
All’interno del castello c’è un tipico teatro siciliano dell’Opera dei pupi, che racconta le storie di Carlo Magno e dei Paladini di Francia.

The Castle of the Counts of Modica is a medievalcastle in the town centre. The Peralta family started the construction of the castle in the 14th century and the feudatories Chiaramonte completed it. In 1535 the emperor Carlo V, returning from Tunis, lodged in one of its towers. The castle has a rhomboidal shape, with a rectangular courtyard. There are two square towers and two circular towers. In the towers they tortured prisoners, there were rooms for sentinels and for guests. There are double and triple arched windows of Gothic-Catalan style.
Inside the castle there is a typical Sicilian puppet theatre, telling the stories of Charlemagne and the Paladins of France.

É una chiesa barocca del XVII secolo. La chiesa ha una pianta a croce latina a tre navate. La caratteristica principale è la particolare suddivisione tra la navata centrale e quelle laterali a serliana C’è un quadro molto antico e prezioso, la “Madonna del miele”. Si trova nella strada principale di Alcamo, il Corso VI Aprile.

It is a baroque church of the 17th century. The church has got a Latin cross plant with three naves. The nave is divided by the two aisles with a serliana. There is a very ancient and precious picture, the “Our Lady of Honey”. It is in the main street of Alcamo, Corso VI Aprile.

É una chiesa barocca. Ha una pianta esagonale. Ci sono pilastri in stile Corinzio. Ci sono due bellissime statue di stucco fatte dal famoso scultore Giacomo Serpotta, “Giustizia” e “Carità”. “Giustizia” è rappresentata da una donna severa che tiene con la mano destra una bilancia e con la sinistra una spada. “Carità” è una madre con il suo bambino che piange per il latte. C’è il convento di Santa Chiara dove le monache realizzano paramenti sacri di seta.

It is a Baroque church. It has got a hexagonal plan. There are pillars in Corinthian style. There are two beautiful stucco statues made by the famous sculptor Giacomo Serpotta, “Justice” and “Charity”. “Justice” is represented by a severe woman who helds in her right hand a balance and a sword in her left hand. “Charity” is a mother with her baby crying for milk. There is the Saint Clare’s Convent where the nuns make silk holy paraments.
