Success doesn’t come to you … you go to it

Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself!

Being academically dishonest includes: <ol><li>Copying/sharing assignments (unless permitted by the teacher for group projects)</li><li>Plagiarism- submitting the work of others without giving credit to the original author</li><li>To avoid plagiarizing- follow the “rules” for citing a source. Ask any teacher for assistance.</li><li>Put all information into your own words</li><li>Cheating on exams or projects- using cell phones, notes, etc.</li><li>Forgery/stealing an exam and/or the answers to an exam</li><li>Altering a grade and/or signature</li></ol>

This is one of the foundations of the educational mission of NCS. Academic dishonesty damages the sense of trust and community among students, Teachers and administrators.

Students will be addressed by their teacher. Depending on the level of severity administration will be involved and a parent meeting will be necessary. Students will receive a grade of 0 on the assignment.

&nbsp;SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCE MYTHS Missing school two-three days a month is not a big deal. FALSE.&nbsp;Missing just two-three days a month is 10 percent, and that equals a big – negative – impact.&nbsp;“Missing two-three days per month can very quickly amount to a heavy load of missed lessons and makeup work.&nbsp;In addition to missing core instruction, students who miss two-three days per month are also missing two-three hours of their intervention/enrichment time.&nbsp; As long as the absence is excused, it’s ok. FALSE.&nbsp;It is true that an excused absence is better than unexcused. There are times when a student needs to be absent. But excused absences can harm a student’s learning just as much as unexcused absences. “Students’ success and attendance have a direct correlation, so even excused absences should be reserved for only appropriate circumstances such as illness or emergencies." Absent students can always do makeup work and be just fine. FALSE.&nbsp;It is true that students can and need to complete makeup work when they are absent. But makeup work doesn’t make up for everything the student missed in school. “When a student is absent, although they can complete makeup work, they miss key instruction on skills and knowledge that is needed to be successful in their classes.”

Grades should reflect the student’s own work for all school-related assignments, tests, quizzes, homework, reports and/or projects.

Play it Safe - No hats, visors, hoods, or bandanas without staff approval.

Play it Safe - Upper garments should cover shoulder to shoulder. They should be long enough to clearly overlap the beltline or be tucked in.

Play it Safe - Underwear needs to be completely covered even when seated. Shorts, skirts and dresses should be at least a fingertip length or longer.

A NY state law intended to create a learning environment free of discrimination and harassment for all students. The law states that no student shall be subjected to discrimination, harassment, or bullying (including cyberbullying).

All students based on, but not limited to, a person’s race, color, weight, nationality, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender (which includes gender identity and/or expression), or sex.

The creation of a hostile environment by conduct or by threats, intimidation, or abuse, including cyberbullying. This includes threats, intimidation, and abuse that occurs verbally, non-verbally, or on any form of electronic communication.

Any written or oral complaint made to a school employee about discrimination, harassment, bullying, or cyberbullying is significant, and must be reported to the Dignity Act Coordinators for investigation.

Clothing should NOT interfere with the educational process of others, This Includes: <ol><li>Clothing that exposes too much skin: such as low-cut pants, low cut necklines, backless blouses, spaghetti straps, see-through material</li><li>Skirts, dresses and shorts should reach the “tip of the pinky finger” when hands are held to sides and standing straight</li><li>Clothing that promotes illegal or violent conduct, drugs, alcohol, weapons or threats</li><li>Head coverings are not allowed unless required for religious or medical purposes</li><li>Footwear must be safe.&nbsp;</li></ol>

<ul><li>It Promotes self-respect</li><li>It helps maintain a safe and healthy learning environment</li><li>Revealing clothing distracts others</li><li>Some slogans or images may be offensive</li></ul>

Students and staff may feel comfortable speaking to you directly. If not you will be asked to speak to administration if you are not in compliance with the dress code. The administration of the school will be the final judge of what is or is not acceptable. Students will be asked to rectify their clothing to be in compliance.

<ol><li>Student electronics must be kept on silence at all times</li><li>When entering classrooms teachers will remind students to either put in the gray bins or put them away.</li><li>Students are not allowed to use phones in the hall, cafeteria, or bathroom.</li><li>If you need to make a phone call or use your phone ask for permission and go to the office.</li></ol>

NCS policy states that students may only use their personal electronics at the discretion of the teacher for educationally related reasons. Additionally research states that actual physical separation from the phone was the only effective solution for students to remain present during instruction. Research also says that physical separation is even more crucial when they’re initially trying to learn something.

<ul><li>Students will be asked to put their devices away.</li><li>Repeated Offense, students will be asked to bring their device to the main office for the day.</li><li>Subsequent repeated offenses will lead to a phone call home and lunch detention being assigned.</li></ul>

Cell Phone Earbuds Headphones

Students may ONLY use their cell phones/ear buds/Headphones for instructional purposes in a classroom at the discretion of the teacher.

Our School Code of Conduct has three main goals:

<ol><li>To ensure the safety of staff and students.</li><li>To create an environment conducive to learning.</li><li>To educate and prepare students to be reflective and empathetic individuals.</li></ol>

Please dress appropriately for school and school related activities

<ol><li>Students are not allowed in the halls during class periods without a hall pass.&nbsp;</li><li>It is the student’s responsibility to sign out of a classroom and obtain a hall pass prior to leaving a classroom, office, etc.&nbsp;</li><li>Staff may stop a student at any time and ask to see the pass. Students must comply with the request. Students found in the halls without a pass after the tardy bell has rung may be asked to go to the office to get a pass.</li><li>This rule is also in effect during lunch period. You need to ask permission to leave the cafeteria.</li></ol>

This is the system we use to keep everyone safe in the event of an emergency.  It is important that staff know where you are!
