Supporting Language Learners in All Classrooms

Helping language learning students access important content across courses can be supported with tech tools. However, it's important for teachers to understand that translation tools offer varying degrees of accuracy with that translation. Therefore, view these constantly improving tools as a supporting option to help students unlock basic, overarching concepts. The goal is to convey an understanding of the main message, while continuously encouraging students.

By the end of each ELP level, an EL can...

Work with your EL teachers to consider how a student's language level can guide developing a plan of support for language learners within your classroom.

Level 2

* show emerging control of English when participating in grade appropriate classroom activities

* convey briefly sequenced and/or simply detailed information, using combinations of simple sentence structures and simple vocabulary

Level 5

* show independent control of English when participating in grade appropriate classroom activities

* convey a complex sequence of events, ideas, opinions, and/or steps in a process, using a wide variety of complex and sophisticated, descriptive sentence structures and a wide vocabulary

Level 1

* show limited control of English when participating in grade appropriate classroom activities

* convey simple information, using simply constructed phrases and sentences with a limited range of vocabulary

Level 4

* show increasingly independent control of English when participating in grade appropriate classroom activities

*convey related events, ideas, and/or opinions, using multiple related paragraphs with increasingly complex, descriptive sentence structures and a wider vocabulary

Level 3

* show developing control of English when participating in grade appropriate classroom activities

* use related paragraphs to convey related events, ideas, and/or opinions, using frequently occurring complex sentence structures and a developing vocabulary

Create a welcoming classroom environment celebrating student cultures through posters, artifacts, etc.

Teach students the academic content standards for all students

Engage students in higher-order thinking skills

Encourage the development of literacy skills and proficiency in the student's first language to facilitate English language acquisition

Accompany oral directions with written directions for student reference

Grade students according to achievement of standards rather than in comparison to other students' performance

Differentiate assessment according to students' language proficiency levels

Create performance-based assessments that enable students to demonstrate knowledge without language mastery

Educators and students now have multiple ways to access written information often shared with students in docs. First, we'll look at how to easily translate teacher-created docs for students. Then, we'll look at how students can scan and translate written docs, books, etc. to support themselves.

Incorporate plenty of visual support and scaffolds for reading-related activities. Do not expect students to get meaning from print

Translate a whole document
1. Translate a whole document
2. Select Review > Translate > Translate Document.
3. Select your language to see the translation.
4. Select Translate. A copy of the translated document will be opened in a separate window.

Translate selected text
1. In your document, highlight the text you want to translate.
2. Select Review > Translate > Translate Selection.
3. Select your language to see the translation.
4. Select Insert. The translated text will replace the text you highlighted in step 1.

Translate a document - COMPUTER DIRECTIONS
1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
2. In the top menu, click Tools
3. Translate document.
4. Enter a name for the translated document and select a language.
5. Click Translate.
6. A translated copy of your document will open in a new window. You can also see this copy in your Google Drive.
