The Sword of a Sergeant

This sword is a Scottish claymore. This sword was a sword used by sergeants in battle. This specific sword was used by Sergeant James Thompson who was in Fraser’s Highlanders. He would have used this sword in the battle of the Plains of Abraham, which was a battle between New France in Quebec City on the 13th of September in 1759.
The story you are about to read has been inspired by this artifact, as well as people, settlement, and life in New France.

Sergeant James Thompson is on a mission commanded by Lieutenant John, a mission to claim Jesuit property to use as a military base and to encourage the Jesuits to leave their post. They pass through a First Nation’s town but the First Nation’s do not like their presence. The soldiers are not intimidated by the First Nation’s glares so they continue moving. The soldiers start to approach the Jesuit Monastery. As the soldiers enter the building they fan out and force the Jesuits to get off the property. The Jesuits want to gather their belongings but the Lieutenant wants them to move out of the building as fast as they came in.

The Lieutenant starts to be more aggressive by pushing around the Jesuits and herding them like sheep. Half of the soldiers pick up this attitude towards the Jesuits and the other half help the Jesuits gather their things. One of the Jesuits is older than the rest so he moves slower. The Lieutenant wants to make an example out of the older Jesuit so he draws his sword. Thompson doesn’t like the way this is going and in a fit of rage and bravery he kicks the Lieutenant under the chin. The sword is launched in the air and Thompson catches it. The soldiers pause for a moment before someone shouts “SHOOT THEM!”

Thompson and four other brave soldiers get cover behind the pillars in the Monastery. In the mist of gunfire Thompson and his men advance and shoot one of the five enemy soldiers. Meanwhile the Jesuits evacuate the building. Two of Thompson’s men shoot and kill one more of the enemy soldiers. After they reload, one of Thompson’s men tries to peak around the pillar and gets shot. In another fit of rage Thompson runs at the two remaining enemy men and hits one under the chin, knocking him unconscious, while striking the other in the face with the butt of his stock.

Before Thompson can react, the final soldier kicks Thompson to the ground and aims his rifle at his head saying that he is going to execute Thompson for his war crime of treason. Before he is able to pull the trigger, a First Nation’s man stabs the enemy soldier in the back.
“Thank you!” mutters Thompson.
The First Nation’s man helps Thompson stand up and says “Thank you for keeping the Jesuits safe.”
“How can you speak English?” Asks Thompson.
The First Nation’s man replies “The Jesuits taught me, sorry if my English isn’t that good.”

Before Thompson can react, the final soldier kicks Thompson to the ground and aims his rifle at his head saying that he is going to execute Thompson for his war crime of treason. Before he is able to pull the trigger, a First Nation’s man stabs the enemy soldier in the back.

The men fall asleep. At midnight the rogue soldiers are startled awake, from the sounds of hooves hitting he soft dirt road. The men begin to get in there clothes,

as they are dressed the First Nation from before greets them. It is time to leave, says the man The men have to evacuate the building in order for them to get to the horses on and escape. As they tip toe down the stairs there is a faint sound of a soldier knocking on the door. Quick find places to hide, the men hide in a large wooden box they use to put firewood. The First Nation answers the door, the soldiers shove him out of the way and quickly scan the room for any soldiers. We are looking for 5 rogue soldiers. The First Nation answers I know nothing of these rogue soldiers you speak of.

“No, its good.”
The four men check on the fallen soldier, but the soldiers believe he is dead.
“I don’t think so,” says the First Nation’s man. “Let me bring him to a doctor.”
The First Nation’s man picks up the limp soldier and takes him to the local doctor.
“I have given him some medicine, all he needs now is rest,” declares the doctor.
“How long will it take? We don’t have much time to spare. Soldiers are going to come here within a few hours if they don’t hear anything from the Lieutenant,” worries Thompson.

“We will send you on your way with men. You will be able to escape, but you will only be able to leave when it is dark out or you might be able to be tracked and you won’t escape,” says the First Nation’s man.
“Ok then.”
At midnight there is a squadron of 30 men that are approaching the town. The First Nation’s men help Thompson and his men get to the horses that are prepared for their escape as other First Nation’s people distract the soldiers. After they have gotten out of the town and down a mountain, they have successfully escaped. They arrive at a town after an hour of riding.
