Hatfield Marine Science Center Speedy Science

Our experiment was to see which gender was faster. We used the green shore crabs for this experiment so it would only be applicable to this species. We also tried to get specimens that were roughly close in size. Our experiment consisted of timing how long it took for the crab to get from end of the half-open tube to the other. On the end of the finish line there was sponge so the crab wouldn’t fall or get away. Some crabs would stay still and some would just race as if trying to get away from you. We had to kind of do it again except this time putting your finger behind so they would all go. It worked better. As far as I remember the males where faster.

The Audubon society of Portland was founded in 1902. They have about 150 acres which has been transformed into a sanctuary for any native animals. In the late 1800’s a painter named John James Audubon made most of his paintings with birds in them. Back in the day you had to kill birds to paint them. He decided to save them instead. He created the society which nowadays has a wildlife rescue centre and visitors centre. You can hike around the sanctuary which also has creek and a pond. There are several Audubon societies or their equivalents around the world today. Part of their work is to rehabilitate animals but if they have some animals that can’t be rehabilitated they keep them with a special permit for education purposes. They have a 40% rate of released animals that came in. That’s a pretty high success rate in the world. This work is important because they save lives that keep the ecosystem a bit healthier. If they can rescue good specimens it can really go a long way. About 200 bats come in per year and most of them have been injured by cats.

So far Fort Stevens has been a really good educational place. I don’t know the Fort even existed or that there was military action around here. I had heard about Pearl Harbour because it really set the U.S. in attack mode. It was one of the reasons they developed the atomic bombs. The attack by the Japanese didn’t end in anything but it changed some people. They never returned fire and the soldiers were really angered because they wanted to  do something after their intensive training.

Cannon Beach is most well known for Haystack Rock. It is third largest intertidal rock in the world.

Because the area around Newport is in danger of getting hit by a tsunami. They have the machine so people can learn about their characteristics and know what would happen.

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

I moved from Calgary this summer. I’ve lived there for 13 years. I play hockey and soccer. I’ve been skating since I was 3 and I started playing soccer at the same age. I went to the same school for nine years where I learned French. I learned English because I was born in Alberta so I kind of have to. My parents are from Colombia so I also speak Spanish. I’m trilingual. I can’t read and write in all three languages. I like the Flames. They are my favourite hockey team.

 The Tillamook cheese factory was founded in 1909. A group of farming families agreed too join forces in order to have more stability in their business. They said that they would always have the best quality products.

I think businesses like the zip-lining are important to small towns because smaller towns need business to live. The more business there is the more money there is to develop it’s infrastructure. Newer infrastructure will attract more tourism because nobody wants to stay in a run-down, old, and cold motel. 

This cement block was pulled off a port in Japan and was dragged across the ocean and was found in Newport, Oregon.

Depoe Bay is known as the smallest navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan.

I learned how to kind of steer a boat. It’s actually pretty simple. It’s like driving a go kart. They let us steer the boat for like 30 seconds but they didn’t explain what all the buttons do.

Columbia River Maritime Museum Crossing the Bar Section

I honestly wouldn’t really want to cross the bar right now. I don’t feel like I need to take the risk even with all the technologies we have today. There’s always the chance I end up wanting to be a search and rescue guy but right now it doesn’t interest me. I feel like I’m a bit more restricted for risks like these.

On several of my car trips I’ve seen elk and they also kind of remind me of animals in my safari that were similar. I saw a few pictures of them near Cannon beach. I hope to see some during the road trip. For being so big I think all animals are good at hiding.

I’m looking forward to revisiting Cannon beach because last time I was there was several years ago and don’t remember it that much. I remember the low tides where you could see a whole bunch of different marine species. The rock had also been filled with birds like cormorants and puffins. I remember that the water was extremely cold probably because we went in April. I’m thinking that the water in April was similar to Late September-Early October.

You aren’t allowed to take any rocks home from the beach because it’s one of the only beaches like that in the world. If everyone takes one or a few rocks everything I’ve soon enough they’ll be none left. It could also disrupt certain animals that could use the depth of the rocks to hide.

Being a citizen scientist means being aware and more interested in what you see around. That you can explain something to other people like what animals you’re seeing. You don’t have to have a lab and work there to be a scientist.

Columbia River Maritime Museum First Nations Section

When the Europeans came in 1778, the First Nations had already been here for thousands of years. The First Nations had a time period where they mostly fished for salmon and then they hunted. The Europeans discovered the large number of big game herds and set up the maritime fur trade. The Europeans didn’t know the land too well so they had make alliances with the First Nations and be guided around the land. The colonists taught the First Nations that everything had a value. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the First Nations shared everything and believed that everything had a role in the world and therefore was equally important. The main fur that was traded in the area was sea otter. They were brought to Astoria and shipped to China, and New York.
