“Island of Females” is a northern town of Palermo&nbsp;that shares its name with the small island located just off its coast. Today this place is known for its&nbsp;nature reserve&nbsp;and for the&nbsp;two charming towers&nbsp;built in the fifteenth century. One of them is located on the mainland and it was built during the Aragonese kingdom while the other one,&nbsp;Torre in Mare dates back to the Roman period.

A legend says that thirteen Turkish girls were guilty of serious sins and for this reason their husbands embarked on a ship and left them adrift. They wandered for days and days at the mercy of winds and waves until a storm threw the boat on an islet in the bay of Carini. After seven years, the families sailed to the little island to get them back.

MONTE PELLEGRINO IS A HILL OF PALERMO, CAPITAL OF SICILY. The Favorita Park or Favorita Royal Estate is the largest city park in the municipality of Palermo. Located at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, it is the large park created by Ferdinand III of Bourbon. The Favorita has a large park with large crops of citrus fruits, olive trees, ash trees and walnuts. In ancient times the park was used for hot-air balloons; today the area is used for sports facilities: the hippodrome and the football stadium. The park is accessed from Piazza Leoni, along two avenues named Hercules and Diana, which run parallel to the park.

Mondello is a small borough of the city of Palermo. Its beach lies between two cliffs called Mount Gallo and Mount Pellegrino. The town was originally a small fishing village but at the end of the 19th century it grew into a tourist town. It was also home to a tonnara, that is no longer active. At some point, a Palermitan nobleman, Prince Francesco Lanza di Scalea, had the idea to drain the swamp with the help of a Belgian real estate company. From 1912 Mondello became the seat of the high bourgeoisie and the aristocracy. A number of Liberty style villas on the seafront promenade have made it one of the gems of Art Nouveau in Europe.

Today they are a busy communication network because they connect the city with the well-known seaside resort of Mondello. Hercules Avenue ends with a fountain with a statue of the mythical hero in the centre. In the park there is also a residence: the Palazzina Cinese in oriental style. Next to it stands the G. Pitrè Ethnographic Museum in the same style. The park is also home to Villa Niscemi, rich in antique furniture and artworks.

Located on the south coast of the Gulf of Palermo, the beach of Romagnolo is a historic coast of the city, one of the most evocative places of sea and relax after the coast of the seaside of Mondello. During the 1800, the noble families of Palermo started to build large holidays houses in the area of Romagnolo, which became the most popular location for the nobles of Palermo until the 20th century, thanks to the beauties of the view, and to the large number of bathhouses.

Over the years, post-war building abuses and disharges were fatal to the coast, which degraded to the point that the gulf of Mondello coast became more fashinating and popular. However, today , with the redevelopment plan of the south coast of Palermo, Romagnolo received again the ancient lost light.

In ancient times these caves were inhabited by man and in some of them prehistoric graffiti and other archaeological finds of considerable importance have been found. To access a large part of the reserve, a marine landing is required. On the rocky coast there are many species of plants resistant to saltiness, such as various species of Limonium (lemons). Finally, among the mammals present in the reserve we should mention the fox, the wild rabbit, the hawk, the lizard, crustaceans and "living fossils", that is fish with primitive physical characteristics.

Addaura is a seaside village or small fraction of Palermo. It is located south-east of Mondello beach, located on the seafront that from Mondello reaches the city bypassing Monte Pellegrino. Characteristics of the place are the various coves immersed in a splendid and crystalline sea and a marina with a view of the Gulf of Mondello. The locality is of significant interest due to the presence of the Addaura cave, a complex of three caves of archaeological importance as evidence of the first settlements since the Paleolithic. The importance of the complex is determined by the presence of rock engravings datable between the final Epigravettian and the Mesolithic.

During summer, the small beaches gather guests who come here to swim.

Tourist port. The name of the Porticello hamlet is closely linked to the small port that forms the backdrop to the landscape. The marina hosts small fishing boats.

Old town square Porticello has a square in its historic center where young people gather in the evening especially in summer to socialize.

The symbol of Mondello is the Art Nouveau building in the middle of the bay, the Charleston. There's a restaurant here, a bar and a beach establishment. The Mondello beach is long and curving, made of soft sand sloping into the turquoise sea. Long stretches of the beach are taken up with pastel-coloured cabins which are frequently rented for the season. It is ideal for all the family, for swimmers and for those who simply want to spend their holidays between sun and sea.

The characteristic mountain behind and the panoramic view of the gulf with sea view make the place a suggestive promenade ideal for days of sun and relaxation. Addaura is also a chic destination for aperitifs and trendy evenings thanks to the numerous seaside clubs which, especially on weekends, offer organized evenings from aperitif to after dinner, with music and haute cuisine food, ideal for tourists and lovers good taste.

The “Conca D’oro” is a plain where lies the town of Palermo and some suburban areas. It is located between Palermo mountains and Tirreno Sea. Near the sea and isolated from the other mountains is Pellegrino Mountain, 609 metres high. The principal river “Oreto” flows around the town. The Conca d’Oro consists of about one hundred square kilometers and once it was cultivated with citrus fruits, from which derives the name, because of the golden colour of the fruits. According to other opinions the name is correlated to the beauties of the city of Palermo and its territory.

The Cala is an arch of sea and it is the oldest port in the city of Palermo. The Phoenicians were the first to exploit this natural inlet. Although over the centuries the major maritime traffic moved from Cala to the port itself (further north), the inlet always attracted the interest of Palermo planners in various historical periods. Currently the Cala looks like a U-shaped tourist port in the historic centre. In July 2008 a new Regulatory plan was presented which focused heavily on the urban recovery of the Cala.

The Capo Gallo nature reserve is a protected natural area located in the city of Palermo, 12 km away from the Teatro Massimo which is located in the city center and was established by the Sicilian Region in 2001. The reserve includes an area of 586 hectares and it is constituted by Monte Gallo, a promontory formed tens of millions of years ago between the Mesozoic period and the Middle Eocene, on which there is a lighthouse which indicates its position. The coastal side of the Capo Gallo Reserve extends from the cape of the same name towards the west up to Punta Barcarello and, given the karst nature of the rocks, the sea has modeled them in the most bizarre forms, forming a series of fascinating caves, such as the "Grotta dell'olio".

“Island of Females” is a perfect location for summer holidays thanks to its amazing&nbsp;beaches&nbsp;and its many activities including&nbsp;diving, windsurfing and boat trips. The beaches are made up for the most part of fine white sand, moving towards the west there are rocks. In summer they are populated by thousands of bathers who flee the city in search of relaxation.

The seabed near the Island of Females hosts a hidden treasure: the underwater landscape of that place is rich in relics from the Greek and Roman.
