Nicaea and its mysterious history

Cathedral of Saint Sofia

Between 10 m high with fortified walls is the Cathedral of Saint Sofia.

Lysimachus renamed the city after his deceased wife Nicaea.

He was later defeated and the region was assegned to Lysimachus of Macedon.

In the museum you can see the remains of the Yesil mosque, very famous for its beautiful torquise tiles.

The Eastern Roman Empire

Afterwards the city lost its importance, but it came back into vogue with the Eastern Roman Empire, in fact, it became the Southern Bulwork.

Iznik was founded in 310 b.C. with the name of Antigoneia from the Macedonian King Antigonus.

The first Ecumenical Council took place in 325 a.C.

Later Alexander the Great's conquered the city.

Iznik: "Where are you going?...To Nicaea, of course!"

The name Iznik was given by Ottomans people, it comes from the answer to the following question: "Where are you going?...To Nicaea, of course!"

First center of ceramics

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Iznik was the main ceramics centre.

Iznik the ancient Nicaea is situated in the South of Izmit and it has got Roman and Byzantine origins.

Second Council was held in 787 a.C. to discuss the problems of Iconocasty.

Empire Alexios I greek flags

In 351 b.C. armies from Europe invaded Iznik, starting the First Crusade. The next day they were surprised when the Greek flags of Alexios I flew over the city.

Green Mosque is also famous, from the colour of its bright sage green tiles.

In the 17th century Nicaea became an important center for making porcelain, known as Iznik Cini.

For a long time there was peace, until the Seljuks invaded Iznik.

The city was fortified by walls 10 m higs with a double moat.
