Varna Cathedral
Varna Cathedral is one of the symbols of the city. Its construction lasted 6 years (1882-1886) and the first stone in the construction of the temple was laid by Prince Alexander I Battenberg in 1880. The chosen name, "The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin", was in memory of Empress Maria Alexandrovna, a Bulgarian benefactor and aunt of the prince .
Тhe construction used mainly local materials: preserved cut stones from the destroyed fortress wall of the ancient city Odessos. The inner columns are made of solid stone and the outer columns below the windows are made of Rousse stone. The copper sheets for the roof and the cubes are shipped from England.
The temple was erected in 1885. In September the roof was completed and on 30 August 1886 the first liturgy was held.
The complete painting of the temple began after 1949, under the direction of Nikolay Rostovtsev, who donated the murals. The chandeliers, mounted in 1952, are made by the carver Peter Kushlev and in the 60s of the twentieth century the stained-glass windows were made.
The church is 35 x 35 m in size. In 1941-1943 the bell tower/38 m high/ and the domes were built. Thus, the church becomes the second highest in the country after the Patriarchal Church of ,,St.Alexander Nevsky’’ in Sofia .
Located in the very center of Varna, today the Cathedral of the Assumption is one of the most famous buildings in the city. A temple of worship for the Varna people, and at the same time a landmark in the routes of tourists, the cathedral has become one of the symbols of Varna

The history of the theatre, currently known as the Varna Opera Theater, dates back to 1912 when the foundation was laid for the theatre. Its creation was temporarily delayed due to the coming Balkan Wars. After the wars ended, the theatre was inaugurated in 1932. It was registered under the title of the Varna Public Opera House on April 6, 1947 and was officially opened on August 1 of the same year. Stefan Nikolaev was appointed as the theatre's first director and Peter Raichev, a distinguished Bulgarian singer, was invited to be the first art director.
An orchestra, a choir and a ballet group were formed under the leadership of the young conductor Raichev, the choir-master Dimiter Mladenov and the choreographer Assen Manolov. Aside from the theatre's usual participation in opera productions and children's music shows, the corps de ballet stages ballet productions. The Varna Opera Corps de ballet has had many tours in Greece, India, Egypt, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Romania.
