In Poland, Advent is the beginning of Christmas Time. It's a time when people try to be peaceful and remember the real reason for Christmas. People try not to have excess of anything. Some people give up their favourite foods or drinks and parties and discos are not widely held. Some people also go to Church quite frequently. There is the tradition of the 'roraty', special masses (or communion services) held at dawn and dedicated to Mary for receiving the good news from the angel Gabriel. During Advent, people also prepare their houses for Christmas. There's lots of cleaning and people wash their windows and clean their carpets very thoroughly. Everything must be clean for Christmas day! Advent Calendars are also popular. some people like to make calendars for their families, so they are more personal.

On the table there are 12 dishes - they are meant to give you good luck for the next 12 months. The meal is traditionally meat free, this is to remember the animals who took take of the baby Jesus in the manger. Everyone has to eat or at least try some of each dish. For Catholics the 12 dishes symbolize Jesus's 12 disciples. Like in many Catholic countries, Christmas Eve is often a 'fasting day' meaning that some people don't eat anything until after sunset (when the Church day officially ends). Some people in central Poland say that at midnight the animals can talk (but I don't think that's very likely)!

The Grinch (2000) ..tells the story of the reclusive green Grinch (Jim Carrey) who decides to ruin Christmas for the cheery citizens of Whoville. Q: Why did you choose Sketch(Editing) as a part of your TY Options?

- I didn't like any other ones, so this is the best out of the 'bad bunch'- I think. It turned out good and I always like to do journalism and writing anyways so, it worked out fine.

Q: What is your secret to keep motivated and have you faced any difficulties?

Q: According to what Daniel said earlier on, do you have anything to say back to him?

- I am better. Yeah I am better. (Em excuse me?? Since when it became 'The Best Person Competition'??)

Q: What do you do in Sketch and do you enjoy being a part of the Sketch Magazine?

- My motivation is to keep Daniel busy as the editor. I like to do as much as I can't to make his life a 'living hell' (I believe that was a joke, poor Daniel) and that's my motivation. So always try to be better than other people, it would really help. (I think Daniel will really enjoy reading this, he said he will keep this much entertained.) And difficulties, yeah I find it really hard to copy and paste everything and it's so finicky, it is complicated.

In Sketch I do 'The Most Fashionable Teacher of the Term Awards' and a couple other articles. I really enjoy being a part of this magazine because it is a great chance to communicate with other people that I didn't know before and I get to have fun when doing it.

Q: If you had to introduce Sketch in one sentence, what would you say?

- I will probably say that Sketch Magazine is a lovely magazine made up of lovely people, lovely teacher, in a lovely school, so amazing, and I love it. Every time when I walk into that classroom I want to be happy, not crying, be happy. :D

In the days of the Soviet Union, Christmas was not celebrated very much. New Year was an important time. Following the revolution in 1917, Christmas was banned as a religious holiday in 1929 and Christmas Trees were banned until 1935 when they turned into 'New Year' Trees! If people did want to celebrate Christmas, they had to do it in secret just in their families. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, people were free to celebrate Christmas again. But it's still a quieter and smaller holiday in Russia after the big New Year celebrations. The New Year is the big time for spending lots of money and eating and drinking lots. Christmas is much more religious and private.

New Year is also when 'Grandfather Frost' (known in Russian as 'Ded Moroz') brings presents to children. He is always accompanied by his Granddaughter (Snegurochka). On New Year's eve children hold hands, make a circle around the Christmas tree and call for Snegurochka or Ded Moroz. When they appear the star and other lights on the Christmas tree light up! Ded Moroz carries a big magic staff. The traditional greeting for Happy New Year is 'S Novym Godom'. The official Christmas and New holidays in Russia last from December 31st to January 10th.

Why do we celebrate Christmas in December?

Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The name 'Christmas' comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life.

According to Christianity Today, it was around the year 273 that the church considered commandeering the existing pagan festival of winter solstice as fitting time to honor the son of God. ... Western Christians officially began celebrating December 25 as&nbsp;the birth of Jesus&nbsp;in 336 AD. So there you have it!

Q: What tools did you use to create your comics and do you want to briefly introduce them to our readers?

Q: So Hannah, why did you choose to start the idea of making comics for Sketch?

- It wasn’t really my idea at first, it was actually the teacher’s idea and then, I decided to do the comic. But it takes a while to figure out what the plan was and it took me another while to do it.

- Well it was just the comic tool paint - Clip Art Studio. It's a drawing programme where you can login for 30 days free, ( Now clip art studio have to pay Hannah the advertisement fee(?) ) - You have to pay for the Pro Version and the other version. The Pro Version you can do small comics and illustrations and the other one you can do animations and mangas and stuff.

Q: Have you faced any difficulties or challenges during this? And how did you solve them?

Q: So at last, would you like to give us a little leak for your next comic?

- I will be honest to you, I don’t know, I will figure it out soon. Right now I am working on the comic (Christmas).

- Yep. Sometimes the script I wrote was too long, and the pages would be too long that I have to cut it shorter, like for the Halloween one I have to cut out some bits to make it fit in. And now for the Christmas ones, to save a bit of time, I decided to do some small funny comics or memes that are related to Christmas, like those in ‘The Peanuts’ and ‘Charlie Brown’. They actually gave me inspiration.

Q: How would you describe your routine in your Sketch class? And why?

- I would say I am the editor of Sketch because whenever everyone finishes their ‘books’, I check them if they are correct and I make sure that they are all high quality and also that they are all enjoyable to read.

- Emmmm, I wouldn’t say I am the ‘God’ but I know that I am clearly the best. (Who gave you the confidence???) But em yeah, I wouldn’t say I am the ‘God’ but I would say that I am the average editor.&nbsp; (But 5 second ago you just said you are the best.) I just make sure that everyone is making their 'book' and we are editing the books. (I am in the Sketch Team as well, so I know I am the Best. (Wait What?) )

Q: At the end, do you have anything to say to our readers or the Sketch Team?

Q: Do you think everyone worked hard for their articles?

- Yes, when I look at them, everyone actually did something and putted their effort in it, the themes are unique, yep, they put an effort into it.

- I just hope you enjoy the book, because I know the Sketch Team puts a lot of effort into it. And, yeah I say give them a read because we put a lot of effort in it and we did interviews and yep.

I am so glad everyone has come out here today to witness the rising of the LGBTQ+ flag. As a representative of the student body I along with the people of this school understand and support the LGBTQ+ community. I see it as such an awesome thing that LGBTQ+ is becoming more of an accepted concept in society, I’m sure you’ve all heard the stories from your parents about the lack of acceptance and understanding for the LGBTQ+ community when they were growing up, and though there is still a lack of acceptance in today's world, we are definitely living in a lot more of an accepting world than it used to be only a few years ago and this is more and more present everyday Here is to more acceptance for everyone, and a better world for everyone!

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) ..in this Christmas classic, an old man going by the name of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) fills in for an intoxicated Santa in Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day parade. Q: How long have you been doing this? A: I have been doing this for about 6 years.

Q: Which year group tends to be the best at bringing in stuff? A: 1st and 6th years are very enthusiastic but all year groups are very generous each year and I am amazed at the generosity of people.

Q: Do you remember any year that you have had a remarkable response? A: The first year we did it there was a very big response but this year was very close to beating it.

Q: Do you enjoy doing it? A: Yes because it is a chance to give back to people in need, it is time consuming but well worth it.

Q: what is usually the response you get when you drop the stuff at penny dinners? A: Fabulous, it is really a incredible atmosphere and most importantly you know when you give them the products they are all going to people I need.

Q: Which item is usually brought in the most? A: chocolate, biscuits and tinned food would have to be the item that is usually brought in the most.

In Jamaica, on Christmas Eve the 'Grand Market' happens. It is a really exciting time, especially for children. In every town and city there is a cross between a festival and a market. During the day, people go shopping for Christmas foods, sweets and toys, etc. You might also buy some new clothes ready for the celebrations in the evening. Around 6.00pm the evening part of Grand Market starts and it lasts until the morning. Everyone comes out on their new or best clothes, to celebrate and party all night. All the streets, shops and many houses are decorated with lights. There are normally street vendors selling food like jerk chicken, boiled corn, and sweets like candy canes and sugarcane. Following the Grand Market, some people will go to a Midnight Mass Church Service and others will party all night. Many people will also go to a Church Service on Christmas Day morning before the end of Grand Market.

The Christmas day meal is usually prepared on Christmas Eve. The Christmas Day breakfast includes ackee and saltfish, breadfruit, fried plantains, boiled bananas, freshly squeezed fruit juice and tea. Dinner is usually served in the late afternoon and this may include turkey, chicken, curry goat, stewed oxtail and very importantly rice and peas. Jamaican red wine and rum fruitcake is traditional and is eaten in most homes. The fruits in the cake are soaked in red wine and white rum for months before Christmas.

3. At number 3 is nearly the most popular Christmas, I believe every student knows “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” by Johnny Marks (don’t worry I don’t know him either). As a child I used to sing this song even before the month of Christmas. I loved this song so much I sang it in November (not now obviously). Most people sing this song before Christmas so I was not the only one. (I hope).

4th Year Collection for Chernobyl The Greater Cause

Methods: 1. Fold the plain card into half 2. Cut out your plain background paper (a bit smaller than the actual card but has a go) using a scissors, remember you can cut out different borders (e.g wavy), then glue it on the card. 3. Cut out a length of string and place it swirly on the page (keep it looking natural) then glue it using hot glue at the two ends and some parts of the string to keep it stable. 4. Cut out some shapes with the coloured papers (as Christmas Decorations) then glue the top end below the string. 5. Glue the bell using hot glue just between the string and the bubbles.&nbsp;

6. Cut out some stars (different sizes) and some small pieces of foam sticker, stick them together, and arrange them in different places on the card.&nbsp; 7. Either use a calligraphy pen, or draw the fonts of wish out on a white card, by using the foam sticker again, stick them on the card as well. 8. Open the inner side of your card, on the right side, stick a small piece of white paper (or any other colour that could match to your theme) in the centre of the card. 9. Write out your own Christmas wishes or phrases onto the paper. 10. Now you have a basic look of your very own Christmas Card, but you can continue to express your creativity by adding your own ideas onto it!

4th year students volunteered to collect for Chernobyl The Greater Cause on Thursday the 2nd of December and Friday the 3rd of December.&nbsp; The idea of the collection was that people passing by would donate any change that they had to the charity. The collection groups set out to the village at 9:25 am. There were many different jobs and locations for collectors. The locations were Dunnes Stores, SuperValu, Boots, TSB, Bank Of Ireland, Lidl and 2 pairs were sent to collect money from businesses for the charity.&nbsp;

We had set break times and lunch times to have a break from collecting money. There was a lot of money made because of the kindness of the students volunteering and the pedestrians that passed to donate money.&nbsp;

On the 19th of November the TY's got to meet the author of the novel "All Our Hidden Gifts " Caroline O Donoghue. She gave a speech about the themes in her novel and her inspiration behind it.

The classes 4.1 and 4.4 were the only two classes who where given the opportunity to meet her in person while the class in the year group got to meet her though Zoom

5. The perfect Christmas tree if you want to spend a year worth of electricity in one night, as well as spending approximately 3 days to put the lights on the ceiling to ruin the paint on it, but it looks cool.

1. The upside down Christmas tree, This tree is very unique as you have to hang it off of your ceiling. This is the coolest way to show that you are a real Christmas Lover.

2. The Elf on The Shelf, this may be creepy but its a fun little game to have for either your younger siblings or just a fun hiding game with your family.

3. The outdoor reindeer family. This is such a nice way to light up tour front garden so everyone can walk past and see the reindeer family.

4. Tinsel, it can be put anywhere nut it can also make everything look amazing. Find a colour that pops and boom, you're decorations look beautiful, it can make a big mess though.

Families in Ireland sit down together on Christmas Day to eat a big meal.&nbsp;Roast turkey&nbsp;is the most popular centrepiece of an Irish Christmas dinner. We surveyed over 100 people in the CCS community, asking them about their Christmas traditions. The results above show that the Christmas spirit is very much alive within the community and people love to pass down traditions from generation to generation!

Home Alone (1990) ..is the story of 8-year-old Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), a stubborn child who gets mistakenly left behind by his family as they leave for a christmas holiday. At first, Kevin enjoys the freedom but he soon realizes that being&nbsp;home alone isn't all that cool. Meanwhile, a pair of bumbling burglars played by (Joe Peski) and (Daniel Stern) take advantage of the situation and try to rob his house. It's up to Kevin to defend his home using his mischief and pranks.

In Australia, Christmas comes in the towards the beginning of the summer holidays. Children have their summer holidays from mid December to early February, so some people might even be camping at Christmas. Because it's so hot at Christmas time in Australia, there are quite often massive bush fires across the country. Many volunteer bush fire fighters are involved in saving people and property and travel from all over Australia to help in other states. Australians hang wreaths on their front doors and sometimes go out Christmas carol singing on Christmas Eve. People also decorate their houses and gardens with Christmas Trees and Christmas lights. Neighbours sometimes have little competitions to see who has got the best light display. The neighbours often visit each other to look at the light displays at night.

Most families try to be home together for Christmas and the main meal is normally eaten at lunch time. Most people now have a cold Christmas dinner, or a barbecue with seafood such as prawns and lobsters along with the 'traditional english' food. On Christmas Eve, fish-markets are often full of people queuing to buy their fresh seafood for Christmas day. Some people like to have the 'traditional' Christmas Pudding but there might also be cold desserts like pavlova and trifle.

Here at Carrigaline Community School, we value fairness and equality. This week, we are celebrating the LGBTQ+ students at CCS. This is such a large school and it’s very important that we acknowledge that we have many different students from all walks of life. Everybody is unique in their own way and this is absolutely something to be celebrated.&nbsp; Stand Up Awareness week is all about fighting back against homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. Unfortunately, LGBTQ+ people still face discrimination in many aspects of life, including school. This is something that needs to change. Raising awareness about the issues LGBTQ+ people face is extremely important. We want to create an environment where LGBTQ+ students feel safe, appreciated and valued.

Favourite Christmas movie and Why? My favourite movie to watch is the Grinch because like watching it every year Favourite Christmas food and Why? My favourite Christmas food is short bread cookies because I love making them with my mom each year. What are hoping to get for Christmas this year? I haven’t really thought about that yet ,but I really would like a new phone though because mine is *cracked* What is your impression of option subjects ,have you thought what you will decide to study? I don't know yet ,but for my languages I would prefer to do German and I like to Woodwork and Home Ec

10. Starting off at number 10 is “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey. I really enjoy listening to this song because it gets me into the Christmas spirit. Personally I don't agree with Mariah Carey when she says all I want for Christmas is you. For Christmas I personally want new shoes or a tracksuit.&nbsp;

9. Next up is another favourite of mine called “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” by Love To Sing. This song is the most memorable Christmas song that everybody sings on Christmas, but not number one.

Favourite Christmas Movie and Why ? My favourite Christmas movie is Home Alone 1&amp;2 because its a classic movie and I really enjoy watching Kevin destroying the 2 bad men. Favourite Christmas food and why? My favourite Christmas food is a stew of meat with potatoes and carrots and that , because it takes me back to my childhood . What are you hoping to get for Christmas ? What I would like to get for Christmas is money to spend on lots of Robuxs . What is your impression of option subject, have you thought what you would decide to do? No , but all I have to decide is that I am not doing art and I might choose to study both language.

This is the first year we celebrated Stand Up week in CCS. The week gives the students in our school a chance to celebrate and recognise our LGBTI+ community. I am so proud of the students who participated in making it such a successful week. Our student council, the Meithal team, the 4th year Events planning class and Life skills class, under the guidance of Ms. McGrath and Miss O'Connor, helped out with the preparations. There was an overwhelming feeling of good will from the school community. My proudest moment was standing with these school committees as Mr. Burke raised the Pride flag with the help of Mick the caretaker. By marking Stand Up Awareness week in CCS we helped create a friendlier,  safer school for LGBTI+ students. It was the perfect time to ensure everyone knows that biphobic, homophobic and transphobic language and bullying will not be tolerated in our school.

A big part of the Christmas celebrations in Germany is advent. Several different types of Advent calendars are used in German homes. As well as the traditional one made of cards that are used in many countries, there are ones made out of a wreath of Fir tree branches with 24 decorated boxes or bags hanging from it. Each box or bag has a little present in it. Another type is called a 'Advent Kranz' and is a ring of fir branches that has four candles on it. This is like the Advent candles that are sometimes used in Churches. One candle is lit at the beginning of each week in Advent. Christmas trees are very important in Germany. They were first used in Germany during the late Middle Ages. If there are young children in the house, the trees are usually secretly decorated by the mother of the family. The Christmas tree was traditionally brought into the house on Christmas Eve.

Sometimes wooden frames, covered with colored plastic sheets and with electric candles inside, are put in windows to make the house look pretty from the outside. Christmas Eve is the main day when Germans exchange presents with their families. Christmas Day is called “Erster Feiertag” ('first celebration') and the 26th December is known as "Zweiter Feiertag” ('second celebration').&nbsp; Germany is well known for its Christmas Markets where all sorts of Christmas foods and decorations are sold. Perhaps the most famous German decorations are glass ornaments. The glass ornaments were originally hand blown glass and were imported in the USA in the 1880s by the Woolworth stores.&nbsp;

Christmas has only been widely celebrated in Japan for the last few decades. It's still not seen as a religious holiday or celebration as there aren't many Christians in Japan. Christmas Eve is often celebrated more than Christmas Day. Christmas Eve is thought of as a romantic day, in which couples spend together and exchange presents. In many ways it resembles Valentine's Day celebrations in the&nbsp;UK&nbsp;and the USA. Young couples like to go for walks to look at the Christmas lights and have a romantic meal in a restaurant - booking a table on Christmas Eve can be very difficult as it's so popular!
