Focus for this module:
Narrative Writing and Writing Moderation

Narrative: When planning writing experiences within the PYP, it is important to consider ensuring that there are enough opportunities for children to write narratives. The teacher assessment framework both in KS1 and KS2 has statements pertaining to narrative as well as grammar expectations that can be evidenced successfully through writing narrative. Mapping out opportunities to teach narrative is key. The “Primary English Education Consultancy” produces some excellent resources, many of which are free. One such resource is a progression document that maps out narrative genres for each year group and in addition, links grammar expectations as required by the National curriculum. Purpose and Audience: In addition to providing opportunities to write narratives, a variety of genres need to be explored. This allows children to write using a variety of features and understand adapting writing to be fitting for a particular audience as well as be clear on the purpose of a story. For example, is it to take their audience on imaginary adventure, or is it to convey an important message based on historical events? The National Literacy Trust Narrative Text Types document looks at how to plan for the generic text and grammatical features of a variety of text types to ensure children consider purpose and audience.

Focus for this module: Assessment and Moderation

Exemplification Materials and Guidance
These exemplification materials are to support teachers in assessing children’s development at the end of the early years foundation stage (EYFS).
They show teachers using their professional judgement and knowledge of the child’s overall development to make EYFSP judgements. These conversations help to support a successful transition to key stage 1.

All judgements are best fit
Schools should not include burdensome evidence gathering requirements against any of the areas of learning in their assessment policies so that teachers and practitioners can spend as much time as possible interacting with children and directly supporting their learning and development. However, teachers may find it helpful to record, in a simple way, particularly noteworthy achievements, such as what phonemes and numbers a child has learned, in order to determine what to teach next. This is sufficient to make a judgement. Sources of written or photographic evidence are not required and teachers should not record evidence. (EYFS Handbook 2023)

Phonics Screening June 2023
Click here to access an overview of the phonics screening, a list of phonemes that pupils must know in order to pass and a list of strategies to support with the screening. Please ensure that pupils are confident in recognising and blending words using the identified phonemes.
