Education. Welcome to Italy and... to Lucca's CPIA!

We encourage student involvement by introducing competitions or team activities and to assess them with a pop quiz or instant tests. 

In 2007 a reform has also provided for the establishment of Provincial Centres for School Education for Adults (CPIAs) that, together with the upper secondary schools for the second level courses, have replaced the existing CTPs and evening courses respectively. Courses provided by&nbsp;CPIAs are open to people aged 16 and above (people aged 15 can participate in exceptional circumstances).&nbsp;

This video we are going to show you, is about one of our classes where the students: - learn how to plant organically; - do school outings; - visit some interesting places, for example: - special part of Lucca with a professional guide; - the Botanical Garden in Lucca; - the Nottolini Aqueduct.

The adult education system

Lower secondary school (30-36 hrs per week): it lasts for three years. The teaching of two European languages was provided: the first is necessarily English ( 3 hours per week). The second language (2 hours per week) based on the Programme of Studies, normally provides a choice between French, Spanish or German. In secondary school the school year is valid when the pupil has attended at least three quarters of the customised annual timetable. The State exam consists in three written tests (Italian, mathematics and science, English, and second community language) and a multidisciplinary interview.

A system of adult education has been running in Italy since 1997, organised at Local Permanent Centres (Centri territoriali permanenti – CTPs) and through evening courses at upper secondary education institutions.

Outdoor learning!

It aims to: · facilitate the participation of adult students (mainly workers) ·&nbsp;meet particular needs that cannot allow a systematic attendance (health problems, high- risk pregnancies, particular family demands, transportation difficulties) ·&nbsp;facilitate late admissions of students&nbsp;(who have received a waiver). . the online platform allows such students to easily catch up on any missed lessons ·&nbsp;ease communication and coordination between schools, so that they can simultaneously follow our lessons and a vocational pathway ·&nbsp;use innovative learning methods and modernise the way in which we teach.

Our school tries to offer the maximum to its students: - by giving value to experiences which favour social interactions and a sense of belonging to a community - by offering extra- curricular activities which give students a chance to get to know their surroundings - and lab indoor and outdoor activities, by using cutting- edge technology so we can facilitate Special Needs students as well.

Our CPIA in Lucca has&nbsp;other two partnering schools that offer the same courses: in Viareggio e in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana.

First Level Courses They are structured into two streams: ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;First Educational Stage: contact hours (12 per week), online lessons (6 per week) provided through the WeSchool platform. Two different pathways are provided: 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Annual pathway (400 hrs): suggested for students with sufficient competences to ensure them have a good chance of passing the final exam and for students who have achieved an A2 Accreditation in the Italian Language. 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Students who have not achieved an A2 level will be required to take the 400+ 200 hour pathway. ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Second Educational Stage (Upper Secondary School two-year period)

First school cycle Primary school (24-40 hrs per week): is the first step of the first cycle of education. The condition to enrol in the primary school is to come to the age of 6 years. Teaching English Language was compulsory as a result of the Law 53/2003.

The Italian Higher Education System includes: - Universities, divided into private and publicly funded institutions. The quality of the education, however, is comparably high at all institutions of higher education. oInternational students can apply to Italian Universities only if they have an educational qualification that allows them to enroll.&nbsp; The University sector is organized as follows: - Undergraduate Degree (3 years): Laurea - Graduate Degree (2 years) : Laurea Magistrale oPostgraduate Degree (PhD) lasts at least 3 years : Dottorato di Ricerca - Specializing Masters and Continuing Education Programs

Italian education system is structured into: - Nursery schools; - The first school cycle (primary school and lower secondary school); - The second school cycle (secondary school divided into two subsystems, grammar schools and vocational school).

WESchool Platform is a free platform that we use for the entire school year even when it isn’t necessary (due to the pandemic).&nbsp;From our digital platform students can download the contents of all the different subjects, such as videos and exercises that they can do whenever they want or need to.

Our school is characterised by its openness and inclusion, research and innovation even though sufficient resources are not yet allocated to adult education.&nbsp;

In this way we can favour digitalisation and reduce paper waste which has a positive impact on the environment and reduces our paper and toner costs.

Activities aimed at an authentic welcome and integration

Second school cycle The equal status of “education” and “education and professional training” The Moratti reform stated the equal status of the two pathways after the first school cycle: the five year education by the State and the education and professional training by the Regions. It is a “three –point system”: vocational schools, technical schools and high school.

The system of ‘school education for adults’ offers: first-level courses, organised by CPIAs, aimed at obtaining a first-cycle qualification and the certification of basic competences to be acquired at the end of compulsory education in vocational and technical education; second-level courses, organised by upper secondary schools, aimed at the obtainment of a technical, vocational and artistic school leaving certificate;&nbsp; literacy and Italian language courses for foreign adults, organised by CPIAs, aimed at the acquisition of competences in the Italian language at least at the level A2 of CEFR.

School- work related learning The school- work related learning, or vocational learning, is a way of training from 15 to 18 years old, in order to ensure that young people acquire skills they can use in the job market. These pathways, which do not imply an employment, have an overall duration of: - At least 400 hours in the final three years of technical and vocational school; - At least 200 hours in the final three years of high school. Vocational schools The study courses have a duration of 5 years. They are divided into two- year periods and a fifth year, at the end of which students take the State examination in order to obtain the diploma of vocational education. Vocational schools are divided into two sectors: industry and crafts sector and the services sector. Technical schools They provide basic technical and scientific training necessary to those who seek to enter a qualified sector in the employment or freelance occupations market. The courses last for 5 years and are divided into two sectors: the economic sector and the technology sector.

High schools They provide students with knowledge, skills and competencies appropriate to further follow higher studies. The high school area includes 6 major branches: arts, classical, language, music and dance, science, humanities. It lasts for 5 years.

In Italy, as in Europe, ‘adult education’ means a series of activities organised by a school in collaboration with local communities, also involving the labour market and the social partners at territorial level; they may be used to extend or integrate the education provided during compulsory schooling, or to replace compulsory education for early school leavers.

The courses of the ‘school education for adults’ system are available also for prisoners thanks to the establishment of separate seats of CPIAs and of upper secondary schools in the detention centres.

CLIL: teaching and learning in another language The content and language integrated learning, involves the use of a foreign language as a means of learning content. CLIL was implemented in 2010 with reorganisation of technical schools and high schools: in the last year of high school and technical schools; in the third year in language high schools. As for the vocational schools, CLIL is not provided in the Regulations, although it is possible to use the autonomy quota to consolidate the experiences already initiated.

Teachers sometimes involve students in extra- curricular activities to favour their social inclusion. Nursery school (40- 50 hrs per week) is a pre-school path, recommended but not mandatory, for children from 3 to 6 years of age. For children from 24 to 36 months, the spring sections can be activated, based&nbsp;on school projects underlying agreements between the Regional School Offices and the Regions.&nbsp;

You can continue on in your studies to achieve a Technical or Vocational School Diploma. It is aimed to the acquisition of the basic competencies related to the mandatory ten years of education.
