The 5 Themes of Geography
Location
Location is where we are, and can be described by either absolute location (shown by lines of latitude and longitude, or a street address) or relative location (shown by distance, time, landmarks, and direction)
Place
Physical characteristics (naturally occurring features in a certain location) like landforms, plants and animals, resources, and climate, and human / cultural characteristics (ways humans live in a certain location) such as land use, political ideas, and daily life (food, religion, language, music, etc.) define what a place is.
Human Environment Interaction
There are a few ways in which humans interact with the environment: we adapt to it, modify, and depend on it. This involves human use and modification of the environment, any sort of building or man - made structure, and food sources.
Movement
Movement is how people, goods, and ideas are moved from one place to another. Some examples of movement are: cars and trains (transporting people and products)and books, the internet (the movement of ideas).
Regions
There are three types of regions. Formal regions which are defined by governmental / administrative boundaries, (countries, cities, and states) functional regions defined by their function (school district, newspaper service area, etc.) and vernacular regions defined by peoples perceptions of the area or similar characteristics (Deep Cove, Chinatown, Corn belt).

My Answer to the Driving Question
The geography of the west brought a diverse cast of settlers, their cultures and the diverse landscape shaped where we settled in the past and where we settled shaped us now.
This also impacted the economy, by the increase of tourism and people living, working and thriving in the West.

The Last Spike
This photo shows the theme movement. This place marks the place where the last spike on the Canadian Pacific railway was set. Because of the completion of the CPR, people and goods were able to be transported easily and quickly. The photo also represents human environment interaction. People had to modify and adapt to the environment for the railway, so the trains could run safely, and not harm anyone or anything.
The completion of the CPR helped improve the economy, by promoting tourism and trade. Hotels and other attractions were build to draw tourists in. People from other countries immigrated here, which helped diversify and introduce new cultures to Canada.
My great great grandfather worked on the CN rail his whole working life. After he retired, he and my great great grandmother had a free pass, and chose to travel a lot. CN pensioners and their spouses all received a red card with their name on it. This practices still continues as a benefit with pension but the red card is no longer used.
