Japan is an island and country in the northern hemisphere. It lies off the east coast of Asia. Its neighbours are Russia,Korea and China. Tokyo is Japan's largest and capital city.

Japan is a land of great beauty. Mountains and hills cover most of the country. Mount Fuji is in Japan it is 3,776 metres tall. Japan suffers from many earthquakes. This country has about 1,500 earthquakes a year.

Japan has one of the largest populations in the world. The Japanese people come from other parts of Asia. No one knows for sure when people first arrived in Japan.
History
The people of Japan were in World War 2 in a group called the Axis Powers against a group called the Allies. The Axis Powers was made of of a group of 8 countries. It was led by Germany, Italy and Japan.
Animals

There are 32,000 species of insects in Japan. There are also 160 species of wild animals and 700 species of birds. On the main land of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu you can find most of the animals.
School
In Japan the school system is made up of of
- elementary school (six years),
- middle school (three years),
- high school (three years) and
- university (four years).
After middle school you have a choice to go to high school.
