I Wonder 

“A caterpillar on a leaf. It has many legs. It has two antennas.” Devaansh

“I wonder .........what do flamingos eat? I wonder where do they live? I wonder if they can fly high in the sky? I wonder how big are flamingo eggs? I wonder what colour are the eggs? I wonder if I can make pink cake with the eggs?” Meriam

Aahanaa has been actively observing nature around her. Spotting bugs, bug houses, butterfly eggs in her garden, exploring, creating with natural materials and illustrating her observations became part of her everyday learning. She visited her grandma in Kishanganj during her winter break. There in the village, she observed corn fields, tested bamboo’s flexibility and saw animals. The goat in the book was one of many animals that she met during her winter holiday.

Meriam has observed and wondered about the trees in the wind, sharing videos and photographs of her nature observations and play. From playing in the snow and building snowmen and collecting eggs from the hen house to giving us a grand tour of her grandpa’s farm in Morocco, she has done it all and kept us entertained and mesmerised about nature and it’s versatility, beauty and vulnerability. She visited a zoo and saw many animals including birds during her winter break. 

Devaansh has been observing nature as part of his learning in the unit. Despite being an avid lover of cars, Devaansh has managed to spend time observing nature around him. Listening to birds, watering plants, exploring leaves and spider webs are some of the highlights of his nature explorations. The caterpillar in the book was spotted by him on his balcony garden. 

“I saw a goat in a field. It was black in colour but there was some white colour on its leg. It had four legs, a bushy short tail, two long long ears and two horns. It was eating grass. When I touched it, it did not attack me. I think it is a pet. It was very very soft. It said “maaaaaaaaah, maaaaaaaaaaah” when I gave it some grass.” Aahanaa 

“I wonder if ants are having a party in the anthill and eating food. I also want to be small and join the party with the ants.” Aarav

Kushagra has always shared his love for nature. Through short video clips and photographs of observing frogs and snails, chasing butterflies, learning to climb trees, using materials from nature to create stories and taking us on tours of his orchard and vegetable garden, Kushagra has explored nature in many ways. Recently he found a caterpillar in his garden which became part of our book. The caterpillar is safely back in the garden.

Aarav loves animals and superheroes. Enjoying the rain, picking vegetables and fruits, collecting, sorting and creating with natural materials, showing us around his garden full of colourful flowers, plants with patterns were some of his nature explorations. The anthill in the book was found in a jungle during a family holiday. It reminds him of a miniature fort that his family built in the garden as part of their Diwali celebration.

This book is dedicated to our amazing EY1 learners, Aahanaa, Aarav, Devaansh, Kushagra, Meriam and their families.

“I wonder if the caterpillar will have a long life. I wonder if the caterpillar likes to eat dry leaves. I wonder if that caterpillar had a long long travel. I wonder if the caterpillar has a big family. And l wonder if the caterpillar has enough food. I wonder if the caterpillar has a warm and a big house with a fan, chairs, tables, bed and a bathroom.” Kushagra

“The caterpillar was green. It had poison tail. It had yellow and green eyes with white spots. It had little and lots of legs.” Kushagra

“I saw an anthill in the forest. That anthill was brown in colour. It was a triangle in shape. The ants were moving around. The anthill looked like a fort.” Aarav

“I see Big birds with long neck, skinny legs and pink feathers. These are flamingos.” Meriam
