Mother Tongue Other Tongue
EYFOLNE 2022
Express Yourself North East Festival of Languages launched in March 2021 as a virtual celebration of the languages and cultures in the region and our connections to the world. As part of this, Mother Tongue Other Tongue, was reintroduced to enable children and young people aged 7-18 to express and share poetry in their home language (Mother Tongue) or languages they are learning (Other Tongue).

Throughout the following pages you will be able to read some of the beautiful submissions in our Mother Tongue Other Tongue celebration.

We received 74 submissions across 22 languages all of which are spoken across the North East. Each submission will receive a digital certificate.
We are very grateful to the teachers, families, teaching assistants, homework clubs and schools who throughout February and March 2022 encouraged learners to engage in creativity, to be poetic and reflective to create, or to re-create some of the pieces you will be able to read across the following pages.

For 2022 Mother Tongue Other Tongue has been hosted by International Newcastle and the coordination of this Mother Tongue Other Tongue project has been funded by Association of Language Learning North East in memory of Stella Marsh, who steered the original regional language festivals in the 1980s and 1990s.

We would like to extend our thanks to the Routes into Languages team at Manchester Metropolitan University who allowed us develop a version of their Mother Tongue Other Tongue competition for the Express Yourself: North East Festival of Languages, and also the staff and students at the Learning Resource Centre at Newcastle University who have read and reviewed each of these pieces.
